I’m amazed at how easy Liverpool keep possession. It barely looked like they broke a sweat. Arsenal obviously had a horrendous tactical setup and desperately need Bellerin/Tierney as their big game fullbacks but it was just all so easy for Liverpool.

Early days but they looked like the team to beat to me after seeing some of Man City. Though tough to count out the champions of course.

Still bullish on Arsenal finishing third if they can get Pepe and Tierney settled in — certainly like their squad over United and Chelsea at the least.

I know everyone here enjoyed that but it truly was unlucky based on the highlights and the xG stat that is so revered here. Plus the DDG blunder, his narrow post has always been a weakness IMO. I couldn't watch the game as I was on a Filipine island and they don't care about footy here. I did see the highlights today and my god what is the point of VAR if these shits are so afraid to overturn decisions?

Palace deserved a red card for Cahill and another clear penalty on Martial. I hear some other matches were also impacted by VAR refs refusing to overturn the decision (city?). To add insult to injury that shitbag ref booked James for diving when there was clear contact and again VAR disagreed. Palace fought hard and rode their luck but 9 out of 10 times we win that match, especially if the refs had any ounce of professionalism.

That said Ole really needs to put Lingard on the bench. Another failure by Ed and the United board to not get him a center mid or a number 10. Pogba in the pivot is wasted without a player in the 10 position. Either we play with Mata (which I believe Ole is reluctant because he wants to counter quickly) or play Fred and push Pogba up. Which again has issues for quick transitions as Fred can't pick a pass like Pogba. Not surprising Luke is hurt again so another big failure by Ed to not get a proper LB in even if that wasn't a position of need. Rashford was unlucky with the pen IMO. It was hit with conviction and and inch to the right its in. Just one of those days it seems. Happy for Daniel James.

I knew it would be a tough season to finish top 4 but there is enough talent in the squad but perhaps not the depth. Its a disappointing start though to not grab 3 points and Ole is right that we didn't test the keeper enough. Gonna have to do much much better.

But honestly United really wasn't great. A loss was unlucky but 1-1 would not have been completely undeserved for Palace imho. Probably the better team slightly but I did not think it was a dominating performance by any means. Totally agree the James diving card was a joke, especially that it happened with VAR. I also agree with the Martial penalty no-call and the same for Kane's no-call in the Spurs game.

I'm of the opinion that VAR is worse for these "50/50" decisions because a) just like with offside calls, the referees are afraid to stop a play short in fear that they're incorrect so they wait for the play to go on so they are always going to lean towards not calling it and b) once it goes to VAR for review, the inherent bias of referees judging their peers means that we're more likely to not see the on-field call overturned (not wanting to make others look wrong or like they missed the call).

I used to think it was better to have a 4th party making the VAR decisions but now I think the only way that makes sense is if the center referee is the one changing HIS call. But the problem with that is it takes fucking forever and I don't want that at all. It's tough.

Hard to tell on the highlights if we dominated or not. Given the lack of meaningful shots I'd say we had about the same amount of clear cut chances as palace and while we dominated possession it seems we didn't do much with it. Which is not surprising considering we have Lingard as our creative attacking mid. That's partly on Ole and mostly on Ed for not getting Ole what he needs. So now we are left in a position of push Pogba up and trust Matic/Fred or at least trust a revamped defense.

For VAR in my opinion it's simple. Over then the goddamn decisions. The excuse for these decisions was that it happens so fast the refs can't get them right. Ok so now we HAVE VAR to help these fuckers get them right. Yet that isn't happening based on the first three weeks. So at the moment we have incorrect decisions that are now also impacting the flow of the game. The PL can't use that as an excuse because the fuckers tested it in the cup and a lot of these refs have experience with it through Europe and international competitions. It's fucking shit if it isn't used for what it's made for.

so this season is setting up like last season. City and Pool being clear favorites, the real battle being for the remaining CL spots. Too early to tell how many teams could be in for the 3rd and 4th spot. Arsenal have the talent in midfield, and a great striker, defense and GK is still suspect, they have to win away from the Emirates against a top half team before I believe they can challenge for top 4. United for sure can go on one of their runs. Spurs will do what Spurs do, they will get from October-February. Kane will get hurt and they will have another key injury and they will start dropping points. Chelsea and United are the X-Factors both have glaring weaknesses but have talent in their squads. Competition fatigue most likely will get Chelsea as they could not add pieces to help with the cup competitions. United will probably be a Jekyll and Hyde team all year. MD 1 looked really good in 2nd half, MD2 and 3 they stumbled.

They are going to hype up the pool v city match so much and watch it end in a tame 0-0. Both Pep and Klopp seem to approach each other very cautiously and I don't blame them given the fine margins.

Honestly I would rather go for it and lose than draw 7 matches this year again.

but yea neither of us need to win that match enough to press. Classic Kloppo draw and then dont lose another match this year lol.

Aren't both of those essentially the same?

I would say no, it is not a now or never year for Liverpool for multiple reasons:

a) Klopp is signed until 2022, has shown no reason to think he would leave earlier, and could possibly extend on that.

b) Essentially the entire team has long-term contracts that extend to Klopp's end date or beyond. The only key contributors not signed through at least 2022 are Matip (ends next year) and Wijnaldum (in 2021). That means 3-4 years of the current core and we already have replacements for the two mentioned above getting regular minutes. And because of the long-term deals, when we have an unexpected sale (like if Real/Barca/PSG come in for someone), we will have money to replace with more quality and I have full faith in LFC in the market.

c) The entire team more or less is in the prime of their career or young with great potential. Van Dijk, Henderson, Matip, and Wijnaldum are the only current first teamers that will be past 30 by the time Klopp's deal is done.

I would say that if Klopp leaves without winning a title, I will be disappointed but it certainly doesn't have to be this season.

By 538, City has by FAR the easiest group, both by overall rating average and non pot 1 average. Shakhtar and Dinamo are both worst in pot, Shakhtar by far. They are 3rd worst in the entire pool but are pot 2.

G and D are the hardest by the same metric. In G, the pot 4 team Leipzig is higher than the other 3 in the group.

Pool got a tough pot 3 draw but good draws for the other 2. Chelsea got middle of the road all around. Spurs have to play 2nd best in the world but should expect to secure 2nd without much trouble.

Pool and Chelsea prob got the best travel of the English 4. Chelsea has 2 they could take the ferry, pool just have to go to Napoli. City has to go to eastern Ukraine and Spurs to Greece. Zenit got triple fucked cuz Benfica is opposite end of the continent.

Update, misspoke, G is the roughest draw for a pot 1 team, but is middle of the pack overall.

Overall it's D, E, F, B, H, A, G, C. (80.5-72.7)

Pot 1 draws: G, D, E, H, F, B, H, C. Non C are from 73.5-78.4. C is 65.3.

Liverpool fans: hindsight is 20/20. VVD wasn't worth that amount of money when you made the signing just like slabhead isn't worth the amount of money United paid for him either. Fair play that VVD has lived up to his price tag.

Again hindsight is 20/20.

Every Liverpool fan was obviously happy you got a center half but you honestly can't tell me that at that time the value wasn't over inflated. At that time Laporte who is 3 years younger went to City for 20 million less than VVD. Sanchez who is 5 years younger went for 30 million less to Tottenham the summer before. VVD hadn't been tested at a big team or in European competition. Funny how you say slabhead is overrated and not worth the money but VVD literally had the exact same situation in terms of the team he was coming from, question marks on if he could make the step up and over inflated price tag that you paid out of necessity.

Much like slabhead the price tag for him at the time was ridiculous and of course with the benefit of hindsight you will feel he was worth that money because you hoped he would live up to the expectation and he has.

You don't pay for past performance you pay for future (unless you work for United I guess)

I can't speak that well about how he did before, but VVD has been the best defender in the league since he entered anfield and was just named the best player in Europe.

75 million was absolutely not what he was worth at that time but it ended up working out really well for you guys.

I also believe a lot of these players are also playing this well because of Klopp and his system. That's not a dig at the players because Klopp knew they were hard workers and needed to be taught his system to get the best out of them. It's a happy marriage and Klopp improves players that have the work ethic to bring the best out of their talent.

Horrible performance and can't complain about the draw. Happy for Dan James. We finally have a proper winger and this kid would have killed it under Fergie. Ole needs time but he also needs to push Pogba up. Inexcusable that we couldn't score against 10 men within 20 min. Looking at a 2-3 year rebuild and I know the Twitter fans aren't gonna be patient but I honestly believe Ole can do the job if he is given the squad he needs. We should have bought a proper midfielder and honestly should have taken a risk with Bruno. I can't believe we were ok with not revamping the attacking midffield position.

Out of the 4 managers post Fergie I believe Ole has played the most positive football. I actually enjoy watching us play now at least. It’s not just his legend status but we can see the gameplay and if he keeps playing young kids then he is betting on the future which is unprecedented within the top 6. We have greenwood, Chong, Tuanzebe and fringe players like Gomes and garner who will get significant game time this year.

I don’t care about his record at the moment because I can see him trying to build something and I think if given time he can be successful.
