They have a contract to sell 100 shares of stock at whatever the closing price on the contract date is. If they don’t actually own the stock already then they would have to purchase 100 shares at the current market price in order to sell it to whom they owe the contract. Not a problem if the market price is above your contract sale price, you’ve just made money. Big fucking problem if the market price is way way over what your contracted sale price is.
