Germany's answer to Tesla Model S is finally here and will have its world premiere in 6 hours from now.

Watch it live here:

https://www.motor1.com/news/368733/2020-porsche-taycan-livestream

Link also includes known stats and pics which have been revealed by Porsche.

Quote :
"Much of the futuristic interior has already been revealed, complete with a plethora of touchscreens both at the front and rear. There’s the massive 16.8-inch curved display serving as the instrument cluster and accompanied by a 10.9-inch touchscreen and a smaller 8.4-inch touch panel mounted lower on the center console. Even the front passenger can have a touchscreen, while the optional four-zone automatic climate control comes bundled with a 5.9-inch touch panel for those sitting in the back.

As you are probably well aware by now, the EV from Stuttgart will initially be offered in the high-end trim levels with dual electric motors, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel steering. It will have well over 600 horsepower in normal use, with an overboost function increasing output to more than 700 hp and 750 pound-feet (1,017 Newton-meters) of torque for 2.5 seconds. The electric punch will give it some supercar levels of acceleration despite the fact it’s not exactly going to be a light car."

God I hate touch screens.

Looking forward to official introduction of this car more than any other EV in memory, however I'd still rather have a Panamera, which it should be noted, Porsche is still marketing (and pricing) above the Taycan.

I don't know who would buy this. Costs more than a comparable model S, has 1/100 of the charging network, has no autonomous modes. The one thing going for it is a nicer interior, but I can't see that justifying the price.

All the specs, plus galleries:

https://www.motor1.com/features/195865/porsche-mission-e-everything-we-know
https://www.motor1.com/news/368730/2020-porsche-taycan-debut-official

Quite pricey; in fact, barring RR and Bentley, one of the priciest sedans on the market.

Taycan Turbo
616 hp, 671 hp with overboost
627 lb-ft
0-60 mph in 3.0 sec
1/4 mile in 11.1 sec
$153,xxx

Taycan Turbo S
616 hp, 751 hp with overboost
774 lb-ft
0-60 mph in 2.6 sec
1/4 mile in 10.8 sec
$187,xxx

Range on EPA cycle will be in the 200-250 mile range. Charge from 5% to 80% in 23 minutes using 800 V.

Taycan expected to cost around $90,000 and Taycan S around $110,000. Expected reveal at LA Auto Show in November.

^ Cheaper lower powered base models, as in non-'Turbo' and non-S. Read my post.

Got Elon to tweet twice!

https://insideevs.com/news/369152/musk-tesla-porsche-turbo-taycan

Mocked the use of Turbo, plus challenged the Taycan's Nurburgring record for a sedan by promising a Tesla on the circuit next week.

Goes into great detail about the engineering, including how it can do acceleration runs ad nauseum unlike the Tesla.

"The tesla didnt do a full lap actually it did a bridge to gantry lap"

seen a few times in the comments. Don't know whether true or not, but I don't see anything about it after a minute of Googling.

Also

"Porsche now says that the record-setting Taycan was actually a Turbo model and the not the Turbo S model that a Porsche spokesperson said it was. So is it possible that Porsche might have an even faster time in its pocket."

^

1) The Turbo S and Turbo have the same power, just a different level when boost is activated, which lasts only 2.5 seconds.

2) Elon is saying the production version will have even more extreme performance than the prototype.

3) ~20 sec is a long time, and in light of the two points above, I don't think it can be bridged.

(this is of course with the assumption that Tesla did the full lap and not the shorter bridge to gantry lap; where did you get your first quote from?)

^ many tesla fanboys definitely are

in various twitter threads about tesla's alleged and unannounced lap times supposedly besting those of the taycan, many fanboys are saying as soon as tesla officially announces lap times, all those who have put down their name for the taycan (some 40K) will withdraw and purchase the tesla.

others are saying that if the tesla really is quicker around the nurburgring than the taycan then there is no reason for anybody to buy the taycan anymore... as if anybody was going to spend 2x the amount because of lap times to begin with

you buy the porsche because you value the interior and/or brand equity. you buy the tesla because of the value per dollar, charging network, and auto pilot

We have an office Tesla guy. (Model S) He takes us to lunch every Monday. It's crazy fast. But it's absolutely NOT a luxury car. Hard, spartan interior.

^^ so there is no luxury car by that definition?

^ interesting. I have never been inside one, but looked inside several times and have seen pics of the interior online. Looks like a luxury car to me with leather, wood, bolstered seats, massive touch screen, etc.

What is hard? The seats? And what else should there be so that it is not considered spartan and is considered a luxury car?

Any car has a luxury version to be put into showroom and shown off to the customers. It's not the same concept. I think Telsa is not getting to the level of BMW or Benz yet, not to say Porsche or Lambo. It's more like enhanced version of Nissan Leaf.

Yeah sure it is not at Euro-luxury level, and that's because it was not created with traditional luxury in mind. It is a very high tech car company, which explains the "modern minimalist" interior, but the Model S and X are still luxury cars IMO, and are classified as such in the US.

How can cars in the $85k-125k range not be luxury cars?

OK. So it's recognized by market as high-end through money value. But I just went to coffee&car show lately in the neighborhood shopping center. No one single Telsa there. So weird.

It's marketed and sold as a luxury car because it only cost a bit more to make the car that way, allowing Tesla to charge a bit more money. They still lose massive amounts of money on each car sold.

And now Porsche will as well, lol (for every Taycan).

Drag race between P100D and the Turbo S
https://insideevs.com/news/376542/video-tesla-model-s-vs-porsche-taycan

Base Taycan 4S revealed last week:
https://www.motor1.com/news/376144/2020-porsche-taycan-4s-official-debut

Taycan 4S
522 or 563 hp
0-60 mph in 3.8 sec
$104,xxx

This mean, of course, that a base[r] Taycan (non-S) model will also arrive in the future.

^ Screw the taycan, 7:13 is world-class supercar-beating

7:12.13 Viper ACR (2010)
7:12.70 911 GT3 (991.2)
7:13.00 918 Spyder
7:13.90 C7 Z06
7:14.64 LFA Nürburgring Package
7:16.04 Camaro ZL1 1LE (2018)
7:17.00 911 Turbo S (991.2)
7:18.00 911 GT2 RS (997.2)
7:18.00 911 GT3 (991.2)

That's a heavy as hell full-size sedan, keep that in mind, beating proper hardcore supercars, including the $million 918 Spyder! Oh how the tides have turned.

Now just wait for an EV supercar to attempt a run.

^ not sure where you are getting your info, Porsche reported a 6:57 from an actual production 918 (and a 6:56 from a 991.2 GT3 RS). This is compared to a non production vehicle...

^ oh damn, of course. how could i forget that... durrr.

i copy pasted from here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N%C3%BCrburgring_Nordschleife_lap_times

the numbers are correct, it's just that it was a run someone did in 2014. (many cars in the list have multiple entries)

but yes, then porsche did the 6' 57". and i clearly remember when they did, but somehow i blanked when i wrote the stuff above.
