Just swapped my 2017 Nvidia Shield for the 2019 version. It's nice to finally have Dolby Vision + Atmos on Netflix/Amazon (even though Amazon is moving towards HDR10+).

It's also quite a bit zippier compared to my 2017 Pro (which was a HDD).

The AI up-scaling for Netflix and Kodi is pretty great as well.

Anyone else pick one up?

strongly considering it for my oled for the ai up-scaling. does the upscaling only work on buffered content? I would want to use it with my hd homerun

the shield is far and away a better device than any other arm based tv box by a MASSIVE margin.

Yeah and the Shield "checks all the boxes" in terms of standards.

For example Apple TV 4K can't do lossless audio but it was able to do Dolby Vision + Atmos with streaming services (e.g. Netflix and Amz).

Now with the 2019 Shield it pretty much does everything (lossless rips/Dolby Vision/Atmos).

FYI currently color switching between rec709 and 2020 is broken but should be fixed in the next release. An Nvidia dev said they couldn't get it into the 2019 release version. So if you have color space set to 4k/2020/Dolby Vision all non-hdr content is going to look dull unless you manually switch to 709.

I have my entire Blu-Ray collection ripped on two hard drives that I have connected to a Netgear Nighthawk router. I stream the videos through Plex on my Roku. I think my Roku is getting ready to die, as it is pretty old and the video is starting to cut out, it's rebooting on it's own, etc. But the Nvidia Shield only has one USB port, whereas the router has 2.

I guess it is still possible to install the plex app on the Shield and use the same setup I have?

yes, you can still connect to your plex server with the shield and use your existing setup. my plex server is on a seperate computer running internal HDs and NAS.

i think you could use a USB hub to run your plex server on the shield if you wanted, but i'm not positive

that would work fine, but I'd put the drives in a box of some kind where I could layer in raid even if it's just a software implementation. the idea of losing a drive and having to redo what must be dozens of hours of work is very unappealing

Yea, I've been looking for my shop to get rid of an old server that I can use. I just haven't had the time or money to sink into a nice setup.

So no more updates this season? Almost got one last year. Glad I didn’t since there is a 2019 model

well the button layout is awkward when you play games from a system with very different buttons

there's a native dualshock 4 driver, but the button layout is almost the same as the shield controller

the shield controller buttons work okay for NES/SNES, but i don't like them for N64 of Sega Genesis

8bitdo makes BT sega controllers that look really good, I might try the M30 for sega games
https://www.8bitdo.com/m30/

for n64 it looks like they used to make a controller for N64, but it's no longer available. i might try to find one used
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M1KP9GT/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_Fp7RybX3FBG42

i did find a mayflash adapter for N64 controllers, but the reviews i've read have been mixed: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002B9FIUU
