One thing that I have mostly enjoyed about this show is that it is largely grounded in reality in terms of the science and engineering that goes on. Yeah they fudge a few things for drama's sake, but that is a pretty gaping plot hole.

We already found out what happened to Danny though? He killed himself. They were running low on food to deliver to him in the NK capsule and Danielle wouldn't let him back to Happy Valley. When her and Ed came to check on him, he was outside the capsule with his helmet open propped up against a rock holding a picture of his family.

LOL. Oops.

Several weeks was so long ago, apparently.

I was always expecting the buried and marked gun at the North Korean capsule site from Season 3 to be involved in some way, so perhaps I mentally discounted that reveal as unsatisfactory. Or perhaps my brain is rotting and I have early onset dementia. TBD.

I've enjoyed this season more than last because the science hasn't been just totally ludicrous. Although the idea that help from Earth is always a month away regardless of orbit is kinda silly, it isn't always in your face like the magical MSAM is.

I agree with you that with our current technology, yes this is very unrealistic. I do concede, however, that in a universe where the space program was never scaled back after the Apollo program, and funding/research/development in space travel continued at the same pace that it did in the 1960s, it is reasonable that by 2003 they would have significantly more advanced propulsion methods that could feasibly get them there in a month. Still a stretch, but more realistic than some of the other things we've seen.

Spoiler alert:

Sergei being assassinated wasn't too surprising, though it was abrupt/startling. I'm quite confused at the lack of care he took on that last episode. I would have been paranoid as hell getting that close to Soviet operatives again and not having any protection.

Keep in mind that S4 of For All Mankind is set in 2003. So that would prob be TOS, TNG, and DS9. Enterprise was the next one, right?

Also, how long had Sergey been there? His decision to drive there was last minute, literally on his way to work. If he never showed up to work, I'm sure his boss would have called his house and asked his wife where he was. Then when he never came back, she prob would have called the police. So someone (other than the Soviets) would have been looking for him. Also, the US government helped him defect and were protecting him. They would have known that the Soviets would have tried to get to him while they were there. Would they not have had some kind of eyes on him themselves?

^I think AppleTV has a free trial period. Despite our banter, its a good show. Once this season is done (2 more eps I think), it would be worth the free trial period to binge the whole series. Of course, there are ... other ... ways of watching too. Not that I would promote such activities.

^^^Yes I also found that increasingly odd. Then again the US govt's reason for continuing to care about him was considerably less of a priority than the Soviets'.

Well, I know I said no spoilers from me, but yes, a wizard did it. Your intuitions were correct all along.

They actually coordinated the release of a companion album to act as an official score:

Excuse me, didn't you see Dev looking out over the edge of Korolev Crater in the closing montage? It went about how it would in real life if something of value was discovered. It gave Dev an excuse to go to Mars in the first place, and capturing the asteroid ensured a future for Mars including the lame search for life. Glad you decided to continue hate-watching this series. See you again in late 2025.

Been wondering about that all season… wasn’t the water supposed to be relevant…

Overall liked this finale though even if lots of the parts didn’t make sense… why would the Russians rescind her diplomatic immunity. I guess they didn’t need her and it was too much trouble?

Looking forward to the next jump to the future though

There was a lot that didn't make sense if you look too closely or just was nonsensical. The one mutiny person on Ranger 2 managing to get into an EVA suit in under 3 minutes, the whole design of that ship, how you can just smuggle a dozen or so people onto Mars, etc

I still enjoyed the season and the absurdities definitely were not as bad/in your face as last season. I'm not sure how I'll like next season, they realistically can't have Ed in even older makeup...can they? The new cast doesn't seem important enough to follow.

So is it just going to be Dev managing shit on Mars with some contrived crisis?

Lmao so they made a big deal about how little time they have to write and upload the override code from Earth… so they… write it out by hand first. Computer code. By hand. Like do loops and stuff on notebook paper. And didn’t even debug it before uploading it. This is despite the fact that flight software is not written by the engineers who do vehicle and mission design, its done by computer scientists and software engineers, and even if it wasn’t, a project manager like Aleida or Margo would NOT be the ones coming up with it or typing it out.

Agreed that it is insane that people could be smuggled. Believable that stuff like deodorant or alcohol would be smuggled, as its more than likely that someone up high knew about it but didn’t care so as to keep morale up. Smuggling a container full of people though? On a months long journey through interplanetary space? What is the life support situation like? That would be like smuggling 12 civilians onto a US Navy aircraft carrier today.

The entire final sequence seemed rather clunky in terms of how they handled the transmission delay and burn time. The EVAs were also pretty laughable.

I'd be more curious how the logistics of smuggling stuff from Mars was. What was Mars sending back to Earth in sufficient quantity that you could hide a ton of rocks in?

Why wouldn't you keep that on Mars? Why waste the mass? Surely you could find some use for the materials on site. Even if travel to Mars is fairly common with monthly shipments, that's still a lot of mass to be slinging around.

Also, the pieces made with Mars rocks were common enough to be shown In a newspaper ad...no one at Helios/NASA/Roscosmos thought to investigate this? Like this wasn't blackmarket goods in the US, it was openly sold.

I feel like that would be way easier than smuggling 12 people to another planet. Like the air on a Navy ship isn't going to have a noticeable increase in CO2 if you hide 12 people on it.

^^My thoughts would be that anyone important that saw it figured it was a fake. Until maybe someone actually came across one and figured out they were real. Kinda dumb to advertise something like that in a literal newspaper though. But then again, Miles' crew back home may not be the brightest.

^I figured from a logistics standpoint of 12 stowaways on a government vessel where a lot of items are regularly tracked and documented. I have no experience with the Navy though, so perhaps someone else that knows more about that would be able to chime in. Maybe a more appropriate comparison would be smuggling people onto a submarine? Do they keep track of CO2 levels?

Submarine definitely makes more sense. A lot of my job in the military was to pack shipping containers, like the big 20/40 foot ones, to transport munitions. So the steps would be

Sneak people inside whatever complex packing up the stuff
Make inventory match up so you have room in container
Get people in the more restricted area where packing occurs
Get people inside the container
Container gets transported to its hub
Container gets transported to its destination
Get people off those containers without noticing

So in the show's scenario, you're putting a dozen of people into the cargo trunk of a vessel where mass is pretty strictly accounted for. And the container needs to have life support thats likely independent of the vessel? And they gotta survive months?

Also, what are they going to do once they get there? Is there enough food and water to where they can get to it easily? They're not going to randomly show up on camera? No one is going to notice?

Speaking of that, not a single person put it together that Ed/GhostOps were in sublevel 4? You know, the one area on base that was empty enough to support it? That you could have easily just watched footage of the cams like the North Korean guy did?

To use the Submarine example, sure it might be tough to sneak 12 people on a submarine, but now you're expecting them to walk around the submarine for the rest of their lives without anyone noticing?

^And even if all of that stuff DID happen, it would be a MAJOR security flaw. They made a big deal about finding the one traditional gun on Mars -- what is stopping any of these people from bringing another one? Or something more dangerous? If there was a COVID outbreak, it could potentially decimate the entire operation.

When they first mentioned that Lee wanted to bring his wife up, I thought it was a ridiculous idea [for even just one person], but maybe it would be possible under the right circumstances and with some dramatic stretching, Miles would be able to show that he isn't just a dumb technician, he's way smarter than everyone thinks and he was just never given a chance. The logistics of that many people though is just too unrealistic. Even if it takes just a month to get there with this technology, were they confined to a shipping crate that entire time? How did they eat/breath/go to the bathroom? What about thermal conditioning and radiation protection? All things that a box of DVDs don't have to worry about.

Oh, I didn't think Lee's wife was an issue, I assumed it was going to be a thing to like create a fake id/persona, and bring her up somehow as a Helios worker or some other system. I mean Miles was able to get on pretty easily.

Turns out it was way dumber

I thought this was supposed to be the final season. I'll watch another one, but I have a hard time believing it'll be any good.

As to the Russians rescinding Margo's immunity, it was done to (obviously) punish her and send her to prison. Of course, I had expected they would have imprisoned her in Russia, with it's obviously far worse penal system. They definitely couldn't use her for their space program anymore because they wouldn't trust her. Also, her boss is f*cked as well. So there's that as well. I'm sure she was sent off to Siberia.
