Time for some updates, it seems!
Quote : | "Does anyone remember if the quarantine efforts for SARS were this stringent?" |
Nothing like this. In fact, putting 60 million people under quarantine, 11 million of them in one city (Wuhan), is unprecedented in world history. Also, during the SARS epidemic, the Chinese government maintained secrecy and did not report the data for several months after the first case.

Quote : | "I read that the mortality rate is actually much much lower than 2% due to underreporting of active cases." |
Full picture will come out in the future, but I don't think the Chinese government is underreporting. In fact, they have been very transparent, unlike with SARS where they did not make any data public for several months after the first case.
Quote : | "Saw an estimate the number of infected in Wuhan could be more like 75k." |
Who knows... but from all I have seen, the government is being very transparent. In fact, there are so many conspiracy theories now, mostly being propagated by flat-earthers, anti-vaxxers, QAnons, Trumpers, and other sheep, at least as far as the US goes. The most persistent ones: It is a bioweapon, it is lab-made in Wuhan, the US released it on China because of trade talks, Bill Gates/Rothschilds/NWO/etc did it for population control, Lysol knew about it ages ago (because Lysol cans say it call kill the "Human Coronavirus" ). True. Of course, numbers have increased since then: 427 deaths, of which 350 in Hubei, 65 in rest of China, and 2 outside China.

5 days ago, it was ~8,000 cases and 170 deaths. Those numbers have ballooned significantly, and the cases are now in 28 countries:
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus
Cases: 20,696 Critical: 2,790 (of above) Deaths: 427 Recovered: 730
Cases increasing daily by ~2,500 these days
And the transmission rate has been revised since my last post (2-3, 5 days ago, now 3-4, maybe higher):
Now:
Quote : | "A more recent study is indicating a Ro as high as 4.08.[22]. This value substantially exceeds WHO's estimate (made on Jan. 23) of between 1.4 and 2.5[13], and is also higher than recent estimates between 3.6 and 4.0 and between 2.24 to 3.58 [23]. Preliminary studies had estimated Ro to be between 1.5 and 3.5 [5][6][7]
Based on these numbers, on average every case of the Novel Coronavirus would create 3 to 4 new cases." |

Schools were ordered closed till Feb 17 when I posted last, but now that has been changed to March 2! LOL, my daughter (10 yo) is happy but we are doing [easy] grade 10 math and bio IGCSE (UK board exams) exam questions with her at home . And playing lots of badminton, ping pong, and going for nature walks and hikes.
Many companies are asking their employees to work from home, where possible, including where I work. Worked from home yesterday, but came in today. Nearly every single person walking outside is wearing a face-mask these days. (normally 5-10%)
Some 7,000+ health workers went on strike yesterday and today to force the government to close all border crossings with China. (17 cases here, with 1 of only 2 deaths outside China)
Long lines at some grocery stores, with certain items selling out fast. Face mask shortage as well, with thousands standing in line at pharmacies for 2-3 hours last week Thursday to get some from the fresh shipments, but those have run out as well.
Time to put on my mask and head home! :facemask emoji: (qntmfred: can we get one? )

Some of the social aspects of this going on with the Chinese government acting like, well, Communists: this could seriously bring down Xi. Although I'm sure he has scapegoats lined up.
Posts yesterday from another message board I'm on.
Quote : | "Today is the first day I've sort of panicked and realised I might need to leave China very soon. Possibly this week or next. It's getting real hairy over here real fast. I've sat quarantined in my apartment in Beijing for four days since getting back from the CNY break slowly losing my mind. I've been living in denial but today was the day I cracked a bit and realised I'm not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy. No one knows what the fuck is going on really which is the scary thing, but I'm looking around with my own eyes and it doesn't look good. I saw a guy being carried out to an ambulance by paramedics in full protective gear across the road from where I live this evening. The armchair experts on here trying to convince people its no worse than the regular flu genuinely crack me up.
The censorship is also going through the roof, even for China. I'm kind of worried to discuss it objectively over Wechat in group chats, stories of people going missing, a lot of messages getting conspicuously deleted, Western media stories of the outbreak are now completely banned on Wechat.
The other thing is the social unrest/economic side of things. The flu is worrying, but the social unrest that might be brewing is even more frightening. No one is working. I think after tomorrow, unless you have the capacity to work from home, to the best of my knowledge you're not getting paid. All the shops are shut except for the supermarkets basically and shit is flying off the shelves. Economic consumption must have slid to a crawl because there's nothing to buy. Anyone who's spent any real time in China knows the whole place is a house of cards but it's ok because the music keeps on playing and house prices go up and the Gucci bags keep on rolling. There isn't unrest yet but if this carried on for a few more weeks which it could well do, I could see there starting to be some real problems over here in a society with few if any safety valves when things go wrong." |
Quote : | "was in Laos with old mates from uni over the break. Basically a two week long bender and didn't check my phone or read the news the whole time I was away. I had been loosely following the Wuhan thing for a bit but it didn't seem like that big a deal until a couple of weeks ago, then just seemed to blow up over CNY. Ran in to a couple of other expats in Vang Vieng who also lived in Beijing on CNY night and they told me they weren't going back to Beijing and staying put/going home. I wasn't really sober enough to comprehend the seriousness of the situation and sort of went in to denial and just ignored the whole thing until I got back to China. One of my mates who I was traveling with is a doctor and tried to explain that going back was pretty stupid under the circumstances but naturally I knew better.
I was still in denial really up until today that it's a serious situation and I probably shouldn't be here any longer. I live in Sanlitun which is like the main entertainment/nightlife area of Beijing. Went for a walkabout on both Friday and Saturday evenings and it was completely dead but at the same time it felt surreal and didn't really all sink in until today." |
I advised him with countries closing flights if he wants to get out, he better do it soon, and to call the New Zealand Embassy (his country) for advice/help.

If you want to throw fire on the official numbers not being real.
https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3871594
Quote : | "TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — As many experts question the veracity of China's statistics for the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, Tencent over the weekend seems to have inadvertently released what is potentially the actual number of infections and deaths, which were astronomically higher than official figures.
On late Saturday evening (Feb. 1), Tencent, on its webpage titled "Epidemic Situation Tracker", showed confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (2019nCoV) in China as standing at 154,023, 10 times the official figure at the time. It listed the number of suspected cases as 79,808, four times the official figure.
The number of cured cases was only 269, well below the official number that day of 300. Most ominously, the death toll listed was 24,589, vastly higher than the 300 officially listed that day.
Moments later, Tencent updated the numbers to reflect the government's "official" numbers that day. Netizens noticed that Tencent has on at least three occasions posted extremely high numbers, only to quickly lower them to government-approved statistics." |

I will admit, I believed China's numbers until a few days ago, because I thought they had learned their lesson from SARS.
But now with more information coming out, what is known is that they are lying/have lied about at least something. Whether they are lying about the numbers or not, I don't know. But, their credibility is definitely in tatters now.
Paper on Virus Transmission Sparks Outrage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpxf6UHGeb8
Chinese scientists confirmed human-to-human transmission way back in mid-December, but they did not let the scientists release the information to the public. The gov only told the world about human-to-human transmission Jan 20.
Public mourning in China after death of coronavirus whistle-blower doctor Li Wenliang https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfGML4Cl2As
A doctor who blew the whistle on early cases in his hospital and did confirm human-to-human transmission end of December was punished by the authorities for "rumour-mongering". He contracted the virus and died yesterday, causing outrage among the population and leading to increased calls for freedom of speech; he is being mourned by all as a hero. The CCP are taking it so seriously -- because the last thing they want is people asking for freedom, and not because they wrongfully punished someone -- that they have sent their top anti-corruption investigators to Wuhan to placate the populace.

Coronavirus: Russian media hint at US conspiracy https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51413870
Seems like the Trump-Putin bromance is not paying off
Quote : | "The coronavirus outbreak in China has provided fertile ground for conspiracy theories and misinformation on the web everywhere, but in Russia they are being spread on primetime news programmes.
Russian TV is also unique in having a consistent overall thrust: that shadowy Western elites and especially the US are somehow ultimately to blame.
One of main national TV networks, Channel One, has even launched a regular slot devoted to coronavirus conspiracy theories on its main evening news programme, Vremya ("Time").
The style of the reporting is ambiguous, appearing to debunk the theories while leaving viewers with the impression that they contain a kernel of truth.
One of the wilder ideas aired by Vremya recently is that the presence of the word "corona", which means crown in both Latin and Russian, in the word coronavirus hints that Donald Trump is somehow involved." |

So on the Diamond Princess ship, there were about 3600 total people on board. They've almost tested half, and 454 people on board confirmed to have coronavirus.
So at minimum, 12% of the ship confirmed to have been infected, 25% of those tested confirmed to be infected.
There was another cruise ship the Westerdam that was not being allowed to dock anywhere. A port in Cambodia finally allowed them, then an elderly American gets off, travels to Malaysia, and is confirmed there to have coronavirus.
If you're on a cruise ship somewhere off the east Asian coast, sucks for you. The Diamond Princess by itself is the 2nd largest confirmed infection rate after China, although I've noticed other countries' confirmed infection starting to edge up larger numbers. The countries that are near China and have greater Chinese travel ties - Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Thailand - are starting to say they have 3 more confirmed infections in a day instead of just one here, one a couple days later.
There's also places in the region like North Korea and Indonesia (has a gigantic population and large Chinese travel links) are presently saying they have zero cases, which some academics are starting to openly question "how?" 2/17/2020 12:28:56 PM |

for some people it seems not that severe, but in others it's much more severe than the flu. the flu is severe enough to hospitalize something like 1% of infected, with coronavirus its about 20% is severe or critical (i assume this will come down as amount of testing increases)
you don't need to freak out but you should pay attention. institutions and large organizations should already be planning and preparing.
infection rates amoung young people is very low, it's much more of a concern if you are 50+

^^ Right if you have a big family to protect/take care of, you could be stressed out. We have to survive and strive through it.

Yeah, I feel like I've gotten all the niggling coughes, colds, and sneezes from my 2 little ones the past year they bring back from daycare. 3 years old and almost 2. Couple years ago the hospitals up here banned children from visiting.
It's the most plausible epidemic in the States. Kids get it, pass it around the daycare or school, seems from the news they're fine, but then go home and give it to their grandparents or not-as-healthy parents, who are the ones statistically most likely the virus will knock down.
