Read through his positions on his wikipedia page. I'm honestly not sure how I feel about him at this point.
He was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, which doesn't win him any points with me. 4/29/2020 8:12:29 AM |

I guess my brain is mush but Twitter punditry seems to think amash helps trump. I don’t see how amash helps trump... seems like he splits the conservative vote in my mind not the dem vote.
Amash famously hates trump and I’m pretty sure this is his objective here. 4/29/2020 10:52:50 AM |

I hope he comes out swinging on the GOP’s massive deficits (I’m talking pre-covid19 here). It has the potential for some real damage, even if it just keeps a few conservatives at home. 4/29/2020 11:30:25 AM |

^^^ the idea, and it is sort of supported by 2018 and the 2020 Dem primary is that when there is no close ideological mirror for suburbanites (women in particular) versus Trump they back the moderate Dem.
If there is a “conservative alternative” they may still thumb their noses at Trump but not vote for Biden.
It’s not about some mythical anti-Trump media caricature but about the real suburban women who largely were responsible for 2018s wave. 4/29/2020 11:53:06 AM |

I mean, were they really going to vote for Biden anyways? I think the silent Trump voter is definitely a thing, they may say they absolutely hate him and hate his behavior, but they see the judges he's appointing and love it.
I think Amash gives some Republicans a way to vote for a Republican/Lib without voting for Trump. 4/29/2020 12:53:11 PM |

Quote : | "U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, of Michigan, was among four members of Congress to vote against a bill Wednesday that would make lynching a federal hate crime.
By a 410-4 vote, the House approved the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act, named after the 14-year-old African American boy who was kidnapped, beaten, and lynched in 1955.
Republican Reps. Louie Gohmert, Thomas Massie, and Ted Yoho also voted against the bill, which federal lawmakers have been trying to pass since at least 1900.
The U.S. Senate is expected to approve the bill, which will require President Donald Trump’s signature. " |

^^^I want a court that is as balanced as possible. I don't want a SCOTUS packed with conservative judges and no liberal judges. That wasn't the idea behind the Supreme Court when it was created. Having a stacked SCOTUS is not....fair and balanced. 4/29/2020 1:50:10 PM |

Libertarians have their first Congressman ever! From Ballot Access News:
Quote : | "Congressman Justin Amash is now listed in the Congressional Directory as a Libertarian. He is the first member to list himself as a member of a nationally-organized party, other than the Democratic and Republican Parties, since Congressman Vito Marcantonio was listed as an American Labor Party member. Marcantonio left Congress after he was defeated for re-election in 1950. The American Labor Party was the New York state affiliate of the Progressive Party that was founded early in 1948 by Henry Wallace.
Ron Paul always listed himself in the Congressional Directory as a Republican. John Anderson continued to list himself as a Republican all during 1980, even though he was running for president as an independent that year." |

In fact, Amash told me that he’s really not bothered by the prospect of tipping the election in Trump’s favor—a curious position for someone who voted for the president’s impeachment." |
Quote : | " But the longer we spoke, the clearer he was: A second Trump term, in his view, is simply not the worst-case scenario.
“I’m a guy who didn’t vote for Trump, and I don’t particularly like the way he conducts himself in office,” he said. “But I’ve never described myself as a” Never Trumper." |

The idea is that an Amash run would benefit trump, because he certainly isn't going to pick up Dem votes (a: He's not a left-liberal. b: Dems are motivated to get rid of Trump and vote Dem). He would capture most of the true, capital-L Libertarian vote, which is what, 1%? Then he'd peel of some of the Never Trump crowd, who largely aren't Democrats and are not happy about voting Biden, but would otherwise do so because there's no fucking way they're voting Trump.
I think I'm a great illustration of that. Once Biden was decided and the Sanders threat was eliminated, there was no way, no how I'd vote for Trump. Odds are 0%. As of right now, I plan on voting Biden, but let's be real, he's only the enemy of my enemy...albeit one that isn't quite so unpalatable that I can't make common cause with him to get rid of Trump. I can see how other Never Trump types could be motivated to choose someone whom they actually pretty much like, over 1 person they don't like and 1 person they loathe with a fiery passion. For that matter, my vote for Biden is a matter of teeth-clenched, grudgingly taking a bitter pill. It wouldn't be tough for him to alienate me and cause me to sit that race out, which would be made even easier with someone like Amash in the race. The danger of that has subsided some, since primary season is over and now he's campaigning (sort of) for the general election. There were a couple of times where I was very close to saying "fuck it, I'm out", though.
At any rate, it's moot now. Just trying to explain the thinking of how Amash would have been a net benefit to Trump.5/16/2020 2:53:16 PM |
