^^actually they sold the rights to the song to Cops for $2500, they don't get any royalty checks for the show.

I've watched a lot of Cops over the years, and I always wondered why suspects would sign releases.

It's also interesting that they obviously edit the footage to make the police look better, but there are plenty of episodes that show cops being condescending sociopathic assholes with superiority-complexes who often use unwarranted force. If they look like that on the edited videos, I hate to imagine what they edited out.

we used to watch it all the time growing up, but I realized how awful it was around 16 or so and never looked back

^I took far longer. I was still watching as recently as a few weeks ago however I'd gradually grown to realize how depressing most of the instances were. It's 90% deep drug addicts, sad domestic cases and mental episodes.

Also everytime I saw them pull out a drug test kit or k9 i gave a nice side eye. Actually one for last eps I watched a guy just had salt in a bag, the cop though that was the case but tested anyway, and I was shocked that the test was actually negative.

I hope there will be a similar Come To Jesus moment with local news organizations and how they report crime

I found it "educational". Again, while it was supposedly edited to put the police in a good light, it often didn't succeed very well, and often showed that many cops are just dumb, power-hungry bullies, even after editing. Of course, I'm sure many law&order-types enjoyed seeing cops harass, berate, and rough-up suspects.

Personally I just enjoyed watching the drunk idiots give excuses about how they only had 1 beer before driving.

it was propaganda

I can’t remember if it was something I read or watched, but it was a good exposè on the franchise and it’s origins. I’ll try to find it.

I mean there were a ton of problems with the show, namely how the camera crew would sometimes help apprehend suspects.

I would be interested in seeing/reading that.

Yes, I agree that it was propaganda for people who have "I support cops" bumper stickers and all, but for me, it just reinforced my skepticism and general disdain of police departments.

This is already starting in my hometown. I just saw a FB posting from the Gaston Gazette stating that they will no longer be showcasing mugshots. It's a small step but a step nonetheless.

COPS was always shitty.

Campus PD, however, was always hysterical. Usually a bunch of entitled young white people doing very stupid things and then trying to argue with the police about it, very few serious altercations and even fewer serious consequences.

My favorite was when they were citing a bunch of bros smoking a bong on their front porch, the douchiest of them yelling, "This is the most beautiful natural fiber, man, hemp, but the corporations want us to keep wearing the doo-doo of the Earth, polyester!"

To this day I cannot see or hear the word "polyester" without mentally adding, "the doo-doo of the Earth."

^^ I likewise found that show hilarious. I never saw a chapel hill or NCSU one, but did see several at UNCG and I think UNCW.

I fucking hated this show. I refused to watch it. It has all of the most awful elements in it, from exploiting those with mental illness to showcasing people having really bad days to pushing the 'hero cop' myth to glorifying guns to making people believe only the police can save them.
Fuck this show.
