Its fast , very fast. But the best part is the battery life. Games are quite playable now too! was not expecting such a huge leap

no I don't work for apple

I pulled the trigger on the Pro, but it hasn't shipped yet. I'm excited for it! My current MacBook is a late-2013 Retina MBP that I bought secondhand, so this is going to be a big jump. Bumped it up to 16 GB of memory and the 1 TB SSD. Should arrive between December 3-10.

are these using some kind of emulation layer for x86 code or do you just have to wait until everyone pushes out an update?

I'm still shocked they put these into the 'pro' line out of the gate.

But judging by the performance uplift of Apple-owned applications like Final Cut if they cranked out a 24 or 32 core trashcan 2.0 this might blow open the door for actually seeing something like 8K get reasonable.

The translation is provided by Rosetta 2, but it'd be foolish to expect every x86 binary to work flawlessly.

People are saying translated apps are running faster too. It’s a pre conversion process, so not the jit emulation you typically see.

I haven’t seen reports of any x86 apps not running so far though. Even wine works.

lets just say every single app or game I have run on the new m1 macs is MUCH faster than even my 2020 macbook air. The translation happens on install/first run. After that its just like running apps on an intel mac. but faster.
And however the memory is handled on these machines in combination with swap file...makes it damn near impossible to tax the ram on the system. I opened every program I have, including multiple chome tabs playing videos. Somehow the system just hovers at 15% or so ram usage and never slows down.

I have been using the m1 macbook pro 8gb since the 17th. Gave my 2017 to the wife and sold me 2020 macbook air.

any quirks with live video processing? I have an old mac mini running pro presenter but it has video in and 4X video out. They haven't certified M1 mac for use yet...

Trying to see if I also need to switch everything to NDI and cracking the piggy bank before pulling too many triggers.

M1 supports a maximum of 2 display outputs.

No support for eGPU.

But hey, I can run multiple software-emulated display links

Is it as fast as many would leave you to believe? Or one of those “if you are on the fence, wait til 2nd gen hardware” kind of things?

I recorded with it tonight, but I use Audacity. Since Audacity hasn't been updated with an M1 build, I don't think I can make a meaningful observation about any performance difference. And anyway, it's only like an hour of stereo recording. Editing it isn't exactly taxing in any case.

For example, the most processing I have to do is usually noise reduction followed by compression. Those steps usually only take like 30-45 seconds in any case and only happen once per session, so even if they ran in under a second, it wouldn't make that much difference to me. We'll see once Audacity updates, assuming they do.

Looking forward to the battery life more than anything.

Sorry, just now came back to the thread!

I'm very satisfied with it. Audacity still doesn't have an M1 build, but it works just fine. All my usual stuff just works for the most part. Migration Assistant transferred everything over from my old Intel MacBook.

I haven't heard the fan turn on once. I don't have the heaviest workflows, but I do often have a video going or have some page full of embedded GIFs or whatever open, and it's been very smooth and fast where my old MacBook would start chugging.

Probably could've gotten away with the Air, and probably would've been satisfied with 8 GB of RAM to be honest.

The battery life is great. Not counting one or two sessions in my dock, I think I've plugged it in three times. I don't use it all day every day or anything, but I never think twice about the battery.

I got a notification this morning that Time Machine hadn't completed a backup in 10 days because I've been on battery the whole time.

Well, not "the whole time" as in constant use for a full 10 days. Just that I haven't had to plug the laptop in for the past 10 days. It's not like I'm putting in full workdays or anything.

yea, id say the biggest day to day difference for me compared to my old macbook would be the increased battery life
I switched from photoshop to pixelmator pro so its hard to compare anything else I do.

I think it's worth it just because MacBooks tend to be difficult to disassemble and repair for end users. I'd rather not deal with the hassle if there is any hardware issue.

Being able to run iOS apps is a drastically underrated feature of these new Macs

As expected, compiling OSS is a little but of a pain since the Mac-arm64 target throws stuff off

its sold, i just replied to your PM

Should have my replacement 14in tomorrow
i cant wait to try Blender..the m1 macbook pro already does simulations faster than my ryzen 9 5900hs gaming laptop. Soon cycles will be using the metal API and rendering will be able to take advantage of the m1 GPUs..that will be amazing.

I think the new machines sound great, but I'm not in the market at all. My 13" Pro has been doing just fine. Looking forward to Monterey's low power mode getting even more life out of the battery.

I didn't think I was gonna get an M2 machine, but I wound up ordering a Mac Mini with M2 Pro. I splurged a bit, honestly probably overbought, but we'll see. Should be delivered in a few weeks.

They were pretty obvious price mistakes - I wasn't willing to take the risk on a M2 iPad Pro to get shipped a 4th gen that I'd be stuck with.

Windows 11 ARM running in parallels feels faster for visual studio work than my 2019 i7 MBP running windows 10 in parallels

Pretty amazing how fast it is, even running VS2008 in emulation in windows running in hypervisor. Microsoft recently committed to supporting parallels too so it should get even better
