^I'd almost forotten. What did Miami Subs become before it became Mami Nora's? It was some place like Kenny Roger's Roasters, right?

I care a little less about remaining in Raleigh short or long term daily.

Other than Lake Johnson, I can’t think of a good reason to be in Raleigh. I’d feel like I settled for less.

This will be my 20th year in Raleigh and I'm feeling the same way. Definitely not loving it. But alas...

I've been here 22 years, and I still like it a lot. It's not perfect, but I'd say Raleigh is way better than it was 20 years ago or even 10. For single people or people without kids, there are far more options to spend time with your friends drinking and eating. The city has even become way more walkable.

For us old timers, there are a lot of free museums we can take the kids to, parks to play at, and lots of options for places to go eat and drink if you have a baby sitter. If you live in N. Raleigh, there's a ton more there, so you don't have to come downtown to do all the things mentioned above.

Above that the city has stayed pretty clean and friendly.

I think those who don't like Raleigh have been here a long time and have phased out of parts of their lifestyle and aren't putting the effort in to take advantage of what the city has to offer. It's not that Raleigh has started to suck, it's that fitting in the fun things gets harder as you get older and if you're not doing that all you see are the downsides (harder the park downtown when you do go or slightly more traffic).

I'm not sure that I agree with that. There are new road and existing channels that have been widened. There are new and expanded bridges. There are expanded bus routes and bike lanes. Is there something in particular (outside of a metro, which is most people's default) that you think Raleigh missed the mark on?

A triangle metro would be great but there is more to measuring infrastructure than a binary judgement on that item.

It's been so long since we've been talking about the train that we could have built it and torn it down 2-3 times by now.

Does anyone remember the name of the PC store at Crossroads Plaza in Cary in the 90s? It was next to Bookstar and I wanna say it was right around here:

After thinking on it some more I think it was Egghead Software. There was a Babbage's at Cary Towne Center (I think) and I will often check out games at both places whenever given the chance. Then Best Buy came to town and kind of crushed these smaller types of stores. And then the internet came along and kind of dampened retail everywhere.

I think I bought a copy of “Mosaic” at Babbage’s at Crabtree in 1995-96. I feel like I remember it being upstairs.

Also rip Mr. Dunderbak's.

This goddamn urban gentrification is bringing in too many goddamn people. Houses cost too goddamn much now, so if we sold right now, we could buy something nicer...in fucking Johnston County.

All the new apartments...five stories, all wood construction. WTF? Raging fires waiting to happen.

Much better food choices than 20-30 years ago.

Plenty of places to drink beer, sip bourbon, be kitschy and cool. And still plenty of places to go if you're a meathead or dicksickle (Glenwood South).

I can get damn near anywhere I want to be in 30 minutes or less...for now.

Oh, and Hillsborough Street has become way too damn generic and commercial and generally sucks dog balls now. All the cool divey joints are gone. I don't like going to the Berkeley to get my goddamn Sadlack's sammich...I miss Sadlack's. I miss Wings to Go, cuz the new wing place down across from UT sucks monkey balls. I miss East Village and getting shitfaced on the deck with my old school peeps. And Pantana Bob's. And the Brewery. And the Comet. And the Cantina. And the Five-O.

Same here. Of course, my behavior was despicable and the honors of various women were insulted. Can’t say I blame them; present me would have told then me to shut up and go sit in the car.

Saw this moving into the first floor of the apartments where the Carolina Equipment building used to be.

Looks almost hilariously bad. There might be hope yet.

^^Mine wasn't a #MeToo situation or anything. I was just with some guys (and gals) who got in a fight with a group of frat boys. Actually, they might have been talking shit to the girls we were with. Wait, was that you?!?!

One thing I am noticing now as Raleigh works its way to being another San Francisco is a lot more homeless people downtown. As more soulless luxury boxes are built and southeast Raleigh is infilled with million dollar plus houses this is a natural consequence I guess. There is of course the impact of the pandemic too. Raleigh is becoming a place for 20 year old tech bros driving the latest model Teslas. I agree Hillsborough Street lost any bit of edge it used to have and there. Coffee shops feel mostly sterile in town. There are a few good art spaces for first fridays and of course the Pour House, Lincoln Theatre, and the Ritz are still alive as music venues. Mitch's is apparently open again as well.

Yeah, more homeless people all over the city, at intersections, highway off ramps, sleeping at bus stations. But I don't think that's isolated to Raleigh, I think that's in most cities.

(Players' Retreat is still there too. There's also the Red Hat Ampitheatre downtown. Does anyone know what the deal is with King's?)

For <shoot>, 540 will eventually become 640. I used to "read" the atlas growing up on long road trips. Once a loop is complete around an interstate then it begins with an even #. Our next completed loop after the 540 project will be 840. Both you and I will be history.
