For all the temporarily remote workers, how is your office's back-to-work plan going? Mine is considering 3 days in, 2 days remote, for unknown and probably pointless reasons.

wife and i never left on-site work, other than that I got quarantined a few times (ranging from a day or two, up to a couple of weeks).

We started back on-site in summer and then stopped. Most people have said they won't come back and I think the organization is slowing coming to terms with it. I will probably go back for a few days a week, but there is no collaboration when I've been back onsite. There isn't a consistent enough group of people to make it worthwhile and restrictions mean most meetings are still virtual even for those in the office together.

This is pretty much our situation. We have manufacturing on site though which means some people need to be there every day and some people don't. But there's major pushback from those who don't. I personally have not sat at my desk in a year and a half. I only go in to prototype designs in our engineering lab. I do like my job, but when they announced this plan I immediately started looking at what kind of fully remote jobs are out there.

I've been back in all day every day since June of 2020. The shit I do can't get done at home.

I'm pretty sick of people who have zero initiative to ever come into work again. I'm not asking for 8-5 or anything like that, but goddammit trying to Zoom/Email/Slack/Text/Call every fucking nuanced communication is grinding and, tho cute at first has definitely had long-term negative effects of the quality of creativity, connectivity and collaboration.

For the love of Mike, please just pop in from 10am-3pm or some shit.

I'm hoping that as the 5-13 year old vax stuff comes on-line, it'll encourage a little bit wider return-to-work trend.

What's your field and why does remote communication make it difficult? Tech companies have been doing this for a while now. Also are you a manager?

I'm Creative Director at NC State. I have a staff of photographers, designers and videographers, as well as work very closely with the office of the Architect.

The designers come in a day or so a week, but the photogs and a portion of the video staff come in every day.

You can't document campus activity, run campaigns, or make commercials from home and taking tours of buildings under construction via zoom just isn't practical.

I left my old job when they started requiring everyone to come back for no reason.

Not because I'm a whiny brat but because my job was mostly remote even before the pandemic so suffered very little when shit hit the fan.

But then when they decided "coast is clear" and started re-examining everything they wanted me to come in "just because." For awhile I drove an hour, sat at my desk for an hour, then drove home just because they threatened disciplinary action.

I asked enough questions to know the issue was facilities usage, aka, they built a bunch of new stuff at exactly the wrong time and they're tired of paying for air conditioning empty offices.

So then I quit and just got a higher paying completely remote job where I go in once a month for big meetings (government). Every other interaction is Teams/Zoom.

My main gig has been remote for almost two years now. No signs of returning to the office.

I took a short term contract job from 10/21 - 1/22 which requires me to be on site from 8am - 2pm Monday through Friday. It's not so bad although the morning commute is fucking terrible.

We were 3 days remote a week before COVID (33% of us were full-time remote).

The last couple months, maybe 25% of people come into the office once a week for the weekly lunch, but all the rest of us are full-time remote. The company has handled it pretty well so far.
