Guy on PackPride had a pretty amazing breakdown

Quote :
"I'd agree with this. It's been a theme for the last 3 years. The team will come out with a game plan and actually execute it in in the first 5-8 minutes, typically building a lead. The pace is also typically faster as well. The game plan will typically involve passing and at least attempting to work the ball through the post.

The team will then abandon the game plan and start slowing down. By halftime they've given most or all of that lead back, though they're often up or even at half based on that early margin.

The second half follows a completely different trajectory. State will come out playing iso/selfish ball, and quickly fall behind against good teams. They sometimes fight back to regain the lead, but lose that lead again in the end. Against the cupcakes they'll normally win because they have enough talent or lead to overcome the significant delta in bench coaching over the last five minutes (where subs, set plays and time out usage are huge). Against any good team, if State's down at the 5 minute mark they will not come back, and they often blow leads if up at the 5 minute mark.

This behavior actually happened starting late in year one. We'd play a certain way for about 32 minutes and "run out of gas" reverting to iso stall ball. Many attributed the late season swoon to Beverley hitting a freshman wall, but it was more of a pace/game plan issue and unfortunately an omen of things to come. The issues got worse starting in ACC play in year two, and by the time ACC play rolled around in year three the pace had fallen off the map.

You can see a lot of this in the assist rate and tempo. Here's where we've ranked nationally under KK:

- 2018: Assist rate: 100th, Tempo 32nd

- 2019: Assist rate: 208th, Tempo: 30th

- 2020: Assist rate: 230th, Tempo: 100th

- 2021: Assist rate: 251rst, Tempo: 192nd

- 2022: Assist rate: 334th, Tempo: 177th

The assist rates are absolutely brutal, and it's pretty obvious that teams have figured out if you get us in the half court, we cannot win.

For all the "Manny would have made us a top 25 squad" talk last year, I think you can look right here and see that wasn't going to happen:

- 2021: 3 point defense: 204th, Opponent's offensive rebounding percentage: 296th, % of shots blocked: 11.3

- 2022: 3 point defense: 302nd, Opponent's offensive rebounding percentage: 293rd, % of shots blocked: 9.3

There was absolutely no difference in our ability to rebound defensively, with our without Manny. There are about 70 shots per game, so a 2% difference in shots blocked quals to 1.4 more shots per game. I don't think we were only 1.4 blocks a game from 11 wins and 21 losses to 21 wins and 11 losses.

We were going to be awful regardless of Manny because the offense in the halfcourt is completely broken, we get crushed defensively playing small ball, and our perimeter players (primarily Baby T, but others as well) showed absolutely no interest in playing defense."

Not sure I agree with the comment about Baby T playing no defense. I don't seem to remember that from watching last season. It does look like we have a serious problem with assists.

That's not really a "now leaving" thing... as in, it's not like the next shoe to drop. James Johnson was the last asst. coach left from the cleanout. Not a huge surprise that he may not have meshed totally with the new assistants or maybe Keatts was trying to keep some continuity for recruiting in the portal and now that it seems we are basically done, we don't need him.

No coach or player leaving from last year’s team is too good to replace.

I would definitely like to see a focus on inside scoring. This guy seems like he has the possibility to be even more impactful than even bates on the offensive end.

Our only hope is that Smith comes back and we can cheer for him to be the top scorer in the league. I don’t think we will have much team success.

This has become a problem with Keatts "system" more and more as he progresses in his tenure. He has gotten away from the run and gun fast paced beat you with our fresh legs offense to this stand around and isolate our best player so they can try to take their guy one on one.

It's a big issue that I'm not sure keatts will address, ever. He had Markell to bring the assist rate up early on but now that it's just isolate Devon, Iso Seabron, etc it's really gone downhill.

I like the burns pickup but he is 100% the opposite of what Keatts told us he wanted in a big guy. Remember when he came in and we had yurt7 and he got so frustrated that he couldn't run the floor on fast break or do a full press? Burns is more out of shape and slower than yurt7. I just can't see extrapolating his game from his Big south to the ACC. Burns and Joiner are the only two of the transfers in that SHOULD see significant minutes.

I just feel like the talent we are losing isn't being replaced, even with the talent lost attributing to a 21 loss season. This year could be even worse!

At this point I think they're both probably gone. Seabron is 100% gone and Smith is getting a lot of love in the media + a lot of individual workouts. Wouldn't surprise me to see him go late in the first. He's got any insanely high ceiling, arguably as high as anyone else in the class at his position, he's just still kinda raw as a prospect

Well that's a bigtime oof. I had expected Seabron to go because of his age and the fact his draft stock likely isn't getting any higher, but Smith is still a bit of a surprise for me. I totally get why he would leave this dumpster fire, but damn that is the biggest hit this offseason--even more than bates transferring.

It's a selfish "oof". We are losing a great player and one of the few bright spots from last season's team. If we had literally ANY real scorers returning, it wouldn't sting as badly.

Of course I am happy he is fulfilling his dreams and probably playing pro ball.

On the plus side, I read somewhere we had the 20-something-ith ranked transfer class, so even if we aren't bringing any of our good players back, theoretically the replacements are good? I know there's only so many teams out there with a class the size of ours, so there is that, but at least it's seen as decently good

I watched some of the second combine scrimmage last night with Seabron. They had KK on during the scrimmage and talked to him for along time about Terq and Seabron. Gotta be good for recruiting, right?

Apparently Baby T went off in the first scrimmage and scored 17. He's definitely gone (probably).

From the horse's mouth. Agent told him to skip the second day. Hasn't decided about staying in the draft because he hasn't had the chance to get much feedback yet.

There's still a chance :-D.
