when you link to an image form your photl gallery, no matter the upload size, it is tiny

I think that was to save bandwidth costs. You gotta realize that at the site's peak, there weren't a lot of options for putting your photos online in an easy way you could link (or even hotlink) publicly. I think 800x600 was still a pretty high resolution at the time, so it wasn't really that bad for most users. It gave people an incentive to subscribe to Premium so they could post real img tags.
