In two years at Clemson, Middlebrooks had his highest scoring game (10 pts) against NCSU. And he scored 8 point in four games (including one against NCSU)

Regarding a PG, Jayden Bradley (Alabama) is visiting today. He’ll have 3 years remaining and was a 5* coming out of HS last year. Would be a good get and I think he and Horne would split the minutes.

I don’t know much about Rice but he was ranked highly out of HS and we recruited him. Then he barely played at KU.

I like the Middlebrooks addition. He’s not a star, but can give us quality minutes especially when Burns is outmatched.

We did this with Jack Chambers last season in football…he was a walk-on and also got NIL

Better roster is hard to say. I like where things are now. But I feel like we’re doing a lot of projecting/hoping with Miranda and MJ Rice (if he were to come). Those two are very unproven. Even Bradley…the guard from Bama wasn’t very good for Bama last year. I don’t know a ton about him, I’m assuming there were better players ahead of him (duh they were #1). But that roster has a lotta of hoping dudes take big steps forward in it

Rules aren't the same because Chambers wasn't a recruited athlete here. Never took an official visit or received financial aid. He could be a walk-on here no problem.

If they allowed what you are suggesting with Mahorcic, teams could just have ridiculously deep benches full of "walk ons" after getting them on campus as scholarship players. Like Alabama football could just have 100+ guys on scholarship despite having an 85 scholarship limit. I'll believe it when i see it, but I'm pretty sure the people who think these things up have never read the NCAA rulebook. Kinda like the dipshit who writes for packpride who kept saying Mahorcic needed State to play like 3+ postseason games to qualify for a medical hardship when he decidedly did not.

RE: MHC and the NIL/scholarship situation - Others with much more credibility than Cory Smith/Pack Pride have been saying that for a while. I’ve also read around quite a bit on the internets regarding the subject and there 100% are gray areas/loopholes to do this.

So what's everyone thinking? Because Keatts was pretty ass in the portal until last year.

It seems like last year the incoming transfer class was well regarded, but nothing special and then Burns and Joiner over-performed. Now we are bringing in former 5 stars with ease.

Is it just that the new coaching staff are recruiting their balls off?

Is it NIL $$ and the new transfer rules and us conveniently having a bunch of playing time?

The success of last year's transfer class under Keatts? All of the above? JT3?

You didn't include the "former" 5 star part, these could be less recruited players. I can't find who we were 'vs' for Rice but he also barely played last year.

Flip side, apparently he was relatively high on State out of high school, he and Horne both have local ties.


Rankings only as good as who makes them, but have to scroll to 68 to get to Taylor, nobody else in top 100.

I wouldn't say he was pretty ass in the portal. He had some misses (wyatt fuckin walker, danny dixon) but also some very good transfers in (al freeman, devon daniels, cj bryce, morsell were all definitely hits in the portal) I'd say he has had more hits than misses, especially when you include guys who were solid rotation players despite not being stars (hunt, andree lockett, allen)

Also i wouldn't say Burns over-performed. He was a high-major top 100 recruit coming out of high school, transferred to a mid-major and dominated then came here and played very well. Not really that surprising.

^^^Our NIL budget for basketball is supposedly in pretty decent shape compared to many schools (excluding SEC schools and a handful of others). Keatts recruited Rice in HS and we were in his final few schools...Joel Justus coached Horne at ASU (he also recruited Jaden Bradley when he was at UK). I think Justus is a big piece of it since he has always been known as being a great recruiter.

I think I saw OSU and Pitt mentioned with MJ Rice, fwiw.

And yeah. Bryce, Daniels, Al Freeman, DJ Funderburk, Sam Hunt were all pretty good portal additions. There were some misses too. But I wouldn’t say he was total ass in the portal. But definitely had missed like Danny Dixon or Wyatt Walker.

Also I don’t know about “landing former 5* with ease”. He’s from NC and we recruited him hard out of HS. So the connections were there.

I mean, i guess if you count guys who put up relatively decent stats on bad (or at best mediocre) teams that missed the tournament, then he hasn't been ass. But if you are looking at additions who actually translated to wins, then it seems pretty hard to argue that his transfer recruiting has been good before last year.

A bad team can have some good players.

I think KK has taken chances on guys, both portal and HS, that clearly didn’t pan out. And we can criticize some of his (or his staff’s) evaluations. But I think it’s far more fair to say his portal results have been a mixed bag than to say he’s been total ass.

If the issue is his wins/losses then that’s a separate discussion than strictly answering the question “has he had success bringing in quality players from the portal”
