Another unquestionably beneficial thing for humanity that initially seems icky but when you think about it for a few seconds, and look at the benefits, is actually a great idea 4/11/2024 10:41:08 PM |

Ehh.
I do a pretty good job of not even eating anything ultra-processed…so I’m thinking that pétri-dish and test tube meat is gonna be a no for me. 4/11/2024 10:50:04 PM |

I question "beneficial" seems shortsighted to just think that industrializing everything to its peak is smart for the long term

Unless you don't eat meat, or only eat boutique super-organic small-farm meats, you're already getting plenty of test tube petri dish action. Let's not act all high and mighty here.
Animal agriculture is not sustainable. The planet can accommodate 10 billion people, probably more, but not if they're all demanding cheap hamburgers from industrially farmed cows.
Once synthesized meat reaches a certain level of quality, I think it will probably become the norm for most people and "natural" beef will be a luxury for people with the income and the inclination to afford it. If it looks, smells, cooks, and tastes like a steak, if it has the same nutritional value as a steak, so what?
I've focused on beef because it's so inefficient and ecologically disruptive, but the same applies to just about any meat as we understand it in the United States. Pigs have many of the same problems and, along with chickens, create massive incubators for zoonotic disease when farmed industrially. Even starting from a place of animals having no rights, and of animal suffering being totally irrelevant, animal agriculture presents direct, obvious threats to human health.
I say all this as a person who eats and enjoys meat.4/12/2024 10:46:05 AM |
