I guess not, you could snort instead. I guess it depends on how you wanna source the phlegm. Could be a snort. I guess more accurately, the "hawk" part is an onomatopoeia for clearing your throat in a way that may rise to the level of a cough but does not necessarily constitute a cough.

to me, "hahk" I think is the more appropriate spelling, to me. as in "I did an historic hahk".
