Zero, absolutely zero

More cringe than "Trump got shot, gotcha, why do you support guns". It surprises me how so many people lack the ability to understand the perspectives of others and just project... irrespective of who's right.

But in general, the RNC was so so cringe. It was like some shitty reality TV. The reason they have to keep on saying "we're macho" shows so clearly... they're not. It's so so bad... so lame. god damn

I don’t think anyone has figured out what Vance is grifting for yet. But he’s completely a phony. Most likely has something to do with being Peter thiels stooge but who knows what thiel is even up to.

One possibility is if trump wins, theil pushes his politicians to send trump to jail. Vance becomes president and implements the technolibertarian dream world they all want.

We don’t know what they really want with Vance but it’s obvious it’s not just his obviously fake right wing act that he puts on

rich people / elites always manage to get around the system, so it's less of them disregarding their own values, and more of them disregarding people other than themselves

We watched about 30 minutes of Hillbilly Elegy but ended-up turning it off because it was so bad.

It seemed like an actual daytime soap-opera or a bad Lifetime/Hallmark movie.

Drinking diet Mountain Dew is racist I guess

This is how he’s faking the far right shtick. He doesn’t really get what these people’s grievances are so it slips out in this weird attempts to empathize

There’s another good article out on the Theil-Yarvin-Vance connection, plus musk, these guys are on some scheme. They’re calling it the Dark Enlightenment where the country is functionally ruled by unelected philosopher-kings and they view their own circle as those kings

That would be awesome. Trump in federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison, no Democrats in the White House fucking things up, and the OG, real (?) version of JD Vance running the country and better yet, hopefully bringing the GOP back to sanity.

Now I'd like that. But that shit ain't the truth.

The truth is...I'm gonna vote for Kamala Harris and whomever her running mate is. Even though Democrats and liberalism are loathsome. It really doesn't matter who she picks. It really doesn't matter that the Dems pick her and not someone even worse. The GOP is irredeemably lost and isn't coming reforming anytime soon, and JD Vance knows that his ticket to realizing his ambitions is to sell out and fit the mold, to give the deplorables what they want. The truth is that Peter Thiel, A16Z, etc might not like much about Trump, but they are essentially single-issue voters, supporting the ticket that they believe will be dramatically better for their industry--they aren't about to upset the apple cart to get all the tangential things they believe in once they get the core thing they need...and more importantly, they don't have that sort of pull anyway. GOP politicians need dollars and power brokers, but they are ultimately beholden to the cult at this point.

_______

As an aside, the Dems would be smart to realize that while there is a problem with the extreme high-earners [legally] dodging taxes, you can't fix it by simply hiking rates, and you will create other unintended consequences by blanket taxation of unrealized capital gains.

(also, I personally think they should go one better than promising not to hike taxes on anyone making less than 400k. I think they should acknowledge that the 400k+ crowd gets absolutely buttfucked by the taxman, and what they really aim to go is to avoid having the tax curve go regressive at the 9 & 10-figure bleeding edge. But that's another discussion for another day.)

The unrealized cap gains plan was floated for only people with net worth over $100 million

There’s zero practical problems with that

The only maybe issue is politicians over the years will lower that number, but you fight those fights if needed.

Yeah, the slippery slope thing is a concern.

I also think that discouraging investment is a valid concern in the VC industry and all of the 2nd and 3rd order effects to things it touches. I'm just saying that there are things that need to be thought through a couple of steps ahead, and balanced. (never mind the political considerations)

^I don't get it.

So apparently he was born James Donald Bowman.
But then his mom changed it to James David Hamel (after she married her third husband)
And he changed it to James David Vance when he married in 2014 (grandparent's surname).

I consider myself pretty plugged in but had not heard of Yarvin until this week when Greg Sargent interviewed the author of this article:
https://newrepublic.com/article/183971/jd-vance-weird-terrifying-techno-authoritarian-ideas
This shit is so fundamentally unAmerican. It gets extremely concerning when you account that these dudes have access to enormous amounts of capital, the role money plays in our political system, they are clearly capable of gaming out medium to long term scenarios and are currently grooming/patroning high profile politicians right now.

I thought his diet mt dew remarks were almost a caricature of how dismissive repubs are to systemic racism etc. Just totally trivialized it, and its such a prevalent feeling in the party as a whole, that most are proud of etc. Its just so weird to me, I don't get it

I think he is going to keep saying things that they have to defend, and eventually enough people come around and realize that ticket is backwards

https://www.yahoo.com/news/jd-vance-unlikely-friendship-why-171742551.html

Quote :
"When his book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” was published in 2016, JD Vance sent an email apologizing to a close friend from his Yale Law School days. The friend identified as transgender, but Vance referred to them in the book as a lesbian.

“Hey Sofes, here’s an excerpt from my book,” Vance wrote to his friend, Sofia Nelson. “I send this to you not just to brag, but because I’m sure if you read it you’ll notice reference to ‘an extremely progressive lesbian.’”

“I recognize now that this may not accurately reflect how you think of yourself, and for that I am really sorry,” he wrote. “I hope you’re not offended, but if you are, I’m sorry! Love you, JD.”

Sign up for The Morning newsletter from the New York Times

Nelson wrote back the same day, calling Vance “buddy” and thanking him for “being sweet,” adding, “If you had written gender queer radical pragmatist, nobody would know what you mean.” Nelson asked for an autographed copy, then signed off with, “Love, Sofia.”

That exchange is from a series of emails between two friends, part of a close-knit group of 16 students who remained together throughout their first law school semester in the fall of 2010. As now-Sen. Vance seeks the vice presidency, Nelson has shared about 90 of their emails and text messages, primarily from 2014 through 2017, with The New York Times."
