Description : International Modernist movement in literature, from its nineteenth-century origins to its culmination in the early twentieth century. Definitions of modernity, as embodied in a variety of genres. Placement of Modernist texts within a variety of cultures that produced them.
Prerequisites : ENG 111 and ENG 112; or ENG 113

course comments :Modernist writers - Mann, Kafka, Musil, Bernhard, Sebald, Hamsun, etc. Great books, some of them pretty obscure.

class comments :Class is pretty much just discussion. There were three 5-7 page papers, plus a (difficult) final. No official attendence policy, but he'll flunk you if you skip too much.

instructor comments :My favorite professor at NCSU. Always interesting, frequently hilarious. Take a class with him if you have the opportunity.
