The state of The Wolf Web

submitted by CrazyJ on Wednesday, October 31 2001 at 4:08 PM

Lately there has been a lot of turbulence in the message boards regarding the current moderation standards. There seem to be two distinct groups of users :

1. Users that are not quite as vocal. They have grown tired of the senseless blabble that dilutes the informative and amusing conversation.

2. Users that engage in senseless blabble.

Seeing that amount of users in group #1 far outweight the amount of users in group #2, the moderators have attempted to bring the sensless babble to a halt. We have obviously pissed off a few of you guys in group #2. We would like to please everyone! It is impossible to keep everyone happy with the current system. We need input from you guys! Please check the comments for more info from the moderators and to provide feedback of your own.

after doing an intense analysis of our traffic patterns, I have realized the following. A large majority of our user sessions and our page views come from users that are not in the top 20-50 posters that dominate the lounge with a lot of the sensless meandering. these users in the majority are not at all interested in any of the social stuff.

--------------------------------
an example of the sensless problematic stuff i'm talking about :
thread - "jaZon is the man" - first post - "who's with me?" - my feelings - who cares?

thread - "Beer" - first post - "I just hit the over 50 post mark.....someone go buy me some beer so i can celebrat?" - my feelings - if everyone that hit 50,100,200,etc posts posted a thread about it, we would have 100 new threads a day just about that shit.

thread - "I just " - first post - "fell down the stairs in Harrelson. Nobody saw me, did they?" - my feelings - I tripped over a brick and hurt my toe the other day. did I post a thread about it - NO

thread - "I am the eheex " - first post - "aha!" - my feelings - huh?
-------------------------------------

there are like 20 of these threads a day. you guys bitch every time i delete one. We need a solution!

my solution
basically we need another place for people in group #2 to bullshit around with theirselves. you guys are gonna have to give up the lounge when it comes to petty conversation. there are over a thousand people a day who come to this place and most of them probably don't care about the petty things that happens to you guys every day that you feel the need to post about. this place was started with posting guidelines that are clearly being violated.

I am thinking that we start moving this non-mainstream conversation into the premium palace. these kind of threads do not seem to benefit most of the non-premium community and they seem to be more in line with what the premium users want from the site. that way we can have the premium palace as more of a benefit to paying users that want to go against the posting guidelines.

what do you guys think? we want your input!

I'm gonna get warned or suspended, but fuck it. Without the meaningless babble there would be no TWW. Many of the threads are full of people who have well over 1-2k posts. Why is this? Because everyone else comes to READ....why would they continue to look at threads that are complete bullshit if they weren't etertaining to a certain extent? Wipe out the bullshit posts and then there's nothing left but boring/anal posts that belong in the soap box in the first place. I say if you're whining about people posting bullshit, then go to the "non-bullshit" forums. That is all....suspend/terminate away.

So what brought people to the wolf web beside the fact that it allowed a place for uncensored public discussion....including making bullshit posts.

jazon, i'll tell ya what brought me to the wolfweb... basically it was the people. they weren't childish, but they weren't annoying prudes either. they were just cool. everyone pretty much got along with a few exceptions, but overall it was just fun. there were a few cliques in the beginning, but those have faded with time... the features like the Calender and the Photo Gallery are awesome, and even before those were up, it was just fun to come to and check out what was going on around campus. I've met some of my best friends off TWW... and for that, i'm forever thankful to Jake for this whole site. Thanks Jake.

People come to be entertained. And for the most part, most people are not entertained by reading about pointless shit which inevitably degrade into personal conversations. The personal conversations are only entertaining to the few people involved. The lounge is always littered with topics that are only of interest to about 10 or 15 people. We want the site to appeal to EVERYONE. By making sure that the lounge as well as the other sections interest as many people as possible, we are providing the most useful service to you the users. And this is what we wish to keep free. But we realize that moderation will take away from the enjoyment of the most prolific posters who wish to post about anything under the sun...for this we wish to offer the option of the premium subscription. By letting you post in the premium palace, you can have your fun without ruining the experience for the 4000 other users.

I just want to say that I have been responsible for some stupid threads in the past. Some of them were deleted, usually rightfully so. However, I reserve to post "stupid" threads until a time when everyone is stressed out. I feel it kinda helps to releive some tension. Like when everyone has had a shitty day or week I'll post a thread that is off-the-wall in which users can (hopefully) have a good laugh. Thank you for your time.

guess i'm kinda jaded on this subject since i started posting around the same time as the infamous myrtle, but as long as i've been looking at this site it's been pointless bullshit threads, i found them entertaining, obviously who decided to join after "Begging for Buttsex" feels the same way, i don't know the exact numbers, but i remember a majority of people being up-in-arms about that, then eventually warming up to it, much as you two did jake&joe, or at least seemed to...

guess anyone who joined after february 2001 came here expecting the bullshit threads, whether or not that was the site's purpose

yeah, i don't know about moving the useless threads into premium palace either.

1) Those of us who are paying for it dont' want to see the junk any more then the non-preems do.
2) The point of posting the stupid threads are to annoy or "entertain"(if you can call it that) the general populace, and with a smaller audience, it would defeat their purposes. But that could be a good thing.

What about a voting system like Amazon book reviews... "This thread sucks/rocks/whatever"

Or measure the average amount of time a person reads each thread. Crap threads will have low numbers since on average only a few people will read them.

Or measure the average post length across all threads and compare to the average length of posts across a thread... If the average length is very low then maybe its a crap thread...

Or combine those two.
If you want to get really egghead about it, you might look into the topic of "recommender systems"

I agree that TWW has changed over the past year in terms of quality.

When i first started bout 2 months ago...i posted some bull shit threads...now i don't post as much and mainly just read. I find myself not even looking at some threads just because they seem to be really dumb. Like the one "Insaneman, im me i need to talk to you." that kinda shit is just a waste of space. I like the idea of moving the better part of the threads to the premium palace...as a matter of fact i think i'm gonna go premium. I like most of the people on here...and enjoy goin to waffle house or other stuff with them...its good times. But some people *cough*ncsustinger*cough* who just post for the sole point of getting a higher number of posts should be banned or suspended.
Sorry if that didn't make much sence...was just typing off the top of my head....

This has been posted elsewhere, but its a good idea. Do not delete any threads (except the ones that could incriminate you). Just move them to a new section 'deleted threads' and allow continued posting in them. Users that do not want to see stuff that you deem neccisary to delete never have to enter that section. It would stop people from being pissed off that their thread was deleted.

If you want to move the bullshit conversation to the premium palace, you cant just expect everybody to become a premium member without knowing whats in it. It will never get popular. There should be 3 months free access to the premium palace (or a diff amount of time) just so it will get popular, and then require premium membership to post in it, if you must have the bullshit-post place be for paying members only.

Ive posted a few threads that hae been deleted lately...like that beer one. The reason you say......I dont feel like reading a thread that has 55 responses because it would take me 30 minutes just to read all of the responses and by the time you get to the end....your already tired of reading..like that "what kind of music are you listening to now" thread.....I really dont have the will power or the time to read 70 pages of nothing but songs
i guess what im saying is...the important threads are to long to read..and hence not fun to me

Jake - opening up the trash bin could be a feasible idea. But you are right, it's not going to stop the bitching.

But with the caliber of people on this board, you can't stop the bitching. The people of TWW exist solely for the sake of bitching. I think if everyone here were just happy with everything, they just wouldn't know what to do with themselves.

Bravo!

I first heard of the Wolf Web back when you guys came on The Andrew Payne Show. It took me a while to start posting (I think it was during one of the "Technician Sucks" threads,) but eventually I saw the forum as a neat way to talk to students at North Carolina State University in a more immediate fashion that was allowed in Technician's print format.

At first, I thought people like Myrtle, Trapezius, and Insaneman were the upmost in silly technology, and could not understand how a moderator would allow such people to post in a forum. But then as time progressed I saw their individual personalities shine through what seemed to be more than mere typing in an infernal machine, and realized that they were people, and not simply some sort of figment of the internet's imagination. They became more than caricatures of themselves and started to flesh out a human behind a keyboard dance.

But then I started to see the same post over and over again..."I wanna fuck some bitches," "I'm sooooo fucked up," or "I want some attention; (please shower me with insults/praise)." And it has started to get a little old.

But what can you do? You invite these people into your house. You let them have the remote control and watch whatever TV or listen to whatever song that may please them. They urinate on your bed in the name of "free speech" and call you guys dogs for even letting them in. What gratitude...

At some point I almost gave up trying to rationalize with Wolf Web people. Then I realized that these kids represent a microcosm of what America is. It may not be what America should be, but it is, unfortunately it is the reality.

I want to communicate with people on the Wolf Web, but they make it so hard sometimes. The anonymity makes it hard for people to be responsible for what they say and post. I applaud what you guys have done, because I believe that it is one of the most pioneering things that have been done at North Carolina State University in a long time. There are so many faculties that it could facilitate, and for people to squander it seems unfair. I don't believe that it should always be "so fucking serious," but people should at least be smart about it and realize what they are writing.

Oh well, thanks anyway for the power to post pictures and write nonsensical phrases.

you don't need to 'open' up the trash bin to view deleted threads.... just create a board called trash bin, and make it a place to place B$ topics in, or to move B$ topics to...

i think insanemans idea of opening the premium palace for a limited amount of time is actually a good idea, get people hooked to it first, and then you have a better shot of grabbing their money.

but if you're going to open a new section, a "trash bin", then maybe people shouldn't have the option of posting new topics in it. otherwise it'll just be another "lounge"

i heard about TWW over the summer, but didnt start posting until a month ago...seeing as that i have around 1600 posts already, i assume that i've posted a lot of crap, but i dont usually post in things like the threads that have been locked lately...a lot of those were really stupid, and i've been considering taking time away from here for a while hoping things would calm down a bit...

and i plan on becoming a premium member as soon as i get a credit card (hehehe...being young has some disadvantages ), and i know that i dont want to pay and end up seeing that crap...

i'm gonna have to go with the opening the trash forum...sounds like a damn good idea...

I'm one of those mf's that read all the time. For the most part, people are right, my number of posts isn't going to change drastically. But I DO HATE IT when I want to read and then maybe post something on a topic, and the topic has strewed into this babbalistic rage about how the gramma ninja corrects every post's punctuation to the point, the topic of the thread had no use. But hey, if this is what people want to do all day, it's a free country, well free as long as you do what the law tells you to do

the lounge has always had some dumb garbage in it, but IMHO it has gotten more prevalent. the separate Section, like "Trash Bin" or "Banter", would be a good idea.

I've been on here since January or so, and seeing as I only have 480 or so posts I guess I fall into group 1, but I think the mindless bullshit posts, for the most part, are what make the wolf web so damn entertaining...the lounge can be a lot of fun, and as for the stupid posts (with the exception of the all your base fiasco), they fall to the bottom over time anyway, and if you don't like the stupid stuff don't read it, but I don't really see any reason to block it, or make people pay for it

if people want Intellectual conversation they can go to the soap box or one of the other forums, I don't think the lounge needs to be changed

I agree with jake on this one........... yes, like many of you are saying there are a lot of bullshit threads that people look at for entertainment. But there is still a big difference between a funny bullshit thread and one that doens't talk about anything and is just retarded. I say keep deleting jake.

Honestly I think one easy way to kill TWW is to make all the people mad that do the most talking.
Because I think that if you look you will realize that the people that post the most junk also post alot more relevant stuff than do most other users. But what do I know.

having the trash bin shouldn't really make anyone mad. those in group I could simply go to the loungs. those in group II who enjoy the drivel can go to the trash bin and still post on the silly threads. everyone's happy. more entertaining loune....still "entertaining" drivel.

The most important thing about the trash section is that it stay unmoderated. If moderators dont like it, they do nothing, because it is already in the trash. I dont know what they would do if threads were created in it (if threads can be created) just to piss them off calling their moms whores or something like that. The trash section must not be allowed to become just another moderated section with another trash can below it.

I think there are definitely times when a thread should be deleted or locked, and not just sent to a special section. Threads where people are just attacking each other, or railing about a person, those are uncalled for. Things that could get people into trouble is another situation, when people say something stupid and don't realize it. Those should just be deleted or locked.

I honestly think that a really good way to avoid most of this problem with low quality is twofold. Create this separate section where "trash" goes, but on top of that institute a chat room. I mean, a big thing is that people create these threads to pass time or because nothing important is coming up for whatever reason, or just because they want to say some personal stuff to a few people and they don't want to do a bunch of IMing.

People have been asking for a chat room for a long time, and I think to grow and expand TWW would work well with that. Now, I'm not a premium member and probably never will be if things stay the same, because I don't really need all the extra "benefits," but if you made the chat room only available to premium subscribers, that would take care of several things.

It would cut down on the number of pointless and short sighted threads in the lounge because most of those people are Premium, and they could just say that stupid stuff in the chat room. Secondly, (and this is why I can't really believe I'm advocating it) it would be a huge incentive for those who like TWW a lot and like to use it to become Premium.

If there was a chat room, that would be a big incentive for me to join, and I'm sure it would be for a lot of other people who take up a lot of your server space with their posts and photos, but don't wanna pay. In order to get the full access they'd have to.

But basically combine a "Trash" section with a Premium only chat room, and I think the Lounge would become much more substantive, and those users in group 1 would be more involved. But that's just my personal opinion.

fuhCtious, we used to have a chat room, but it was hard to get to and once the novelty wore off, it was rarely if ever used. but now that TWW has grown some, i think it might work.

its only the fucking wolf web

90% of the people here are fake

i did notice that it was getting really chatty and personal in the threads, so the change i made was to try to stop addressing the people i know by their real names so it woulndt discourage people from posting/reading.

i think its funny as hell that there are like 100 people that call me travis here and i don't know half of them. its like you have to pass the screenname >> realname test before you can talk to people here

I think that by starting to crack down on the lounge you will destroy the wolf web. Don't go to far. I have heard of new TWW-like sites popping up. I don't want anyone to jump ship to those because they don't like it here anymore. In the last few months it seems as though the premium membership number has jumped greatly...maybe that says that people LIKE TWW how it is. I agree that people don't have to read everything that they see. If it is of no interest to you then don't read it.

I think that you're trying to change a society that you've created just because you've created it. You did create TWW, but you cannot rule over us like we're minions...without the people that post a lot there would be nothing to read...and therefore no wolf web. We are a major player in this.

I think that this has become a large money making operation. You (one of you, I'm not sure which one) condemn a beer thread in the lounge yet state "I love this" in a thread about someone wanting to obtain drugs in the premium palace. BUT, I don't really think that is horrible at the same time...you should be making money for all that you do...you have done a kick-ass job with this.

All I'm saying is that you better watch out that you don't make this place mundane by deleting or locking threads that only you feel are pointless...if they have a lot of responses then they are probably liked...just watch out or old people will leave and new people won't get hooked...then all you'll have is group #1...but you can't read posts that aren't there.

-Roo

If you want to make changes, whatever, it's your Wolf Webb, you can run people off as you see fit. I don't think you should come in all IRON FISTED and just ban/suspend everyone without giving them good reasons. I was suspended b/c you said i wrote the same complaining thread as someone else, well, we both typed it at the same time b/c you were pissing everyone off. As for putting them in "the wrong place" well, I'm sorry didn't mean to. If you delete/lock/move a thread you should tell people where and why otherwise, people will just keep posting in the wrong places. Personally, i have always seen the lounge be for ANYTHING, i guess not anymore.

Just give some of the old timers like me who were used to a free and open medium a while to adjust before you get all iron-fisted on us.

not that i don't think this isn't funny, but with the recent locking / suspensions, how is it that i can get suspended for POSTING IN THE WRONG BOARD

but someone can fuck with another user's account, ie: trapezius' (even though it was HIS fault for not logging out) and not get in trouble? I mean, comon, equal enforcement. It's not like it's just some random person either, it's a seasoned user who knows what they're doing.

not my quote, but it illustrates my point exactly. The loungue is, excuese me, WAS supposed to be for ANYTHING. let the people in there decide what's worthy by posting responses and keeping it alive. If other people are "less vocal" then they can post their own

"informative and amusing conversation."
and if the people in the lounge decide its worthy, it'll stay at the top. Otherwise, why are they bitching?

I will say this in the moderators' defense, The changes have gotten me reading / using the other boards alot more. I just wish the changes had been made a little softer, not quite so iron fisted. I know some chat services offer you moderating memberships (read: www.alamak.com). If you guys ever offered that, i might consider it. Anyway, with that, I'm done.

Other than the additions (calender, photo gallery, etc) I enjoyed the site a lot more a year ago. Granted there are a higher number of posts that I am intersted but the percentage is way down. As someone that doesn't spend all day in front of my computer I don't get a chance to read many of the new posts of the day, whereas I could read all the new posts a year ago. For people that have complete conversations between 2 or 3 people, just use AIM or go to a chat room. I don't get on here as much as anymore cause i don't have time to sit and sift through all the bs threads to find something intersting.

Why don't we just make a chat room for the bullshiznitty and keep the boards for serious inquiries and statements? Doesn't that work?

Okay, here's my two cents,

Deleting extremely stupid threads from the lounge, or really obvious/exclusive inside jokes n shit is okay, but they should be moved to a trash bin which is open to premium users to still post on existing threads, but not to create new ones in that section.

Do not open up the premium palace to those who are not premium. That is the incentive to pay, so that you can get into an exclusive area of the site, yea, the "try before you buy" thing may seem appealing to some people, but isn't that what the free memberships are anyways? Like the banner says, "Do you LIKE the Wolf Web?"...Well, if you do, and you want more out of it then pay for it.

Starting the TWW chat again would be a great idea, that would definitely cut down on the amount of bullshit around here. But it should not just be for premium users only, as that would defeat the purpose (i.e. would not help cut out the bullshit) since lots of the accused bullshitters are not premium.

The premium palace should be much more leniant(sp?) with the posting guidelines than the other sections, which would add another incentive for people to pay for subscriptions. I'm not saying that there should just be a free for all which is completely unmoderated, but it should give users more license to say what they want without having anywhere near as much stuff locked/deleted as the lounge Some might say that not being as strict in the premium palace would somehow devalue it by allowing "stupid" stuff to be posted, but in this case, I'll just say what everyone else has been saying IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T SIT THERE LIKE A DUMBASS AND READ IT!! Besides, if you get that pissy eery time someone posts something that you don't like, being lax with the posting guidelines in that section gives you license to flame the hell outta them if you so desire.
Which would you rather pay for, more of the same stuff you get for free, or the freedom to say, for the most part, whatever you want?

Everyone complains about how the moderators are "post-nazis". You know, on most any other message board, if someone personally attacks someone else, they are banned...no questions asked. I dont see this happening here...the moderators are actually TOO easy. If they went by this policy, 10 people would be banned every day probably. I say this knowing that even I have made a post or two that could be worthy of a ban based on that policy (regardless of whetever it was provoked). Maybe if the moderators took this policy, the board would be worth reading again. I sometimes wonder why I even read this site because as CrazyJ said, there are a lot of "Users that engage in senseless blabble"...and of course the fact that its well-documented about how most of the people on here hate me even though they havent met me because they listen to all the rumors and lies they hear and assume them all to be true just because they are friends with the person or persons telling them and are not with me...But thats another story.
