American Eagle Commercial Shoot On Campus

submitted by DirtyMonkey on Wednesday, April 10 2002 at 2:48 AM

American Eagle Outfitters will be shooting a "Back-to-School" blue jeans commercial this weekend in the courtyard between the two dorms. The commercial will be aired this fall on MTV and other networks. If you would like to be an extra in the commercial, and you are over 18, a casting session will be held at 10:00am Thursday, April 11th at the Jim Graham Building on the State Fairgrounds. If cast, you will be compensated, but will need to be available from 12noon-5:00pm Friday and 7:00am-dusk Saturday and Sunday. The American Eagle Cast and Crew will also have a catering truck and tent set up at Tucker Beach.

Here's the shit part of the deal. NC State is taking away the courtyard for the weekend, along with all entrances to those two buildings except for the back door in Turlington and the basement entrance of Alexander. Also, the basement of Turlington will be taken for a break room for the cast and crew. So I can't do laundry on Saturday or Sunday during the day (I sure as hell am not going to spend my weekend night life doing laundry), I can't cook myself breakfast/lunch/dinner (I don't anyways, but some people do, and now they can't), and I am not allowed in the front yard of my "home". Why would NC State do this? For a measley $10k. Each of us (who live on campus) pay at least 10 grand every year. Now NC State wants to ruin our weekends with loud ass music from 7am to dusk. Its horse shit. They could have at least given us more than 4 days notice. I'm sure American Eagle didn't call up the chancellor on Monday and plan all this. Its cool that something like this is happening here, but I feel like a prisoner.

It would be a horrible horrible thing if some group of troublemakers rolled the trees where the commercial shoot will be held the night before. It would surely stop it from happening. This would be a tragic moment in history.

they definitely should give more than a couple days notice if something like this is going to happen.

See this just isn't cool. Our school finds a way to make some free money and we whine. Most of the money is even being spent on the students that live on campus, for swings and things like that. Rolling the place just isn't right! If you don't like it just chill in your room for a couple of days or simply go out the other doors. You can even come to Tucker and cook and wash your clothes if you like...I'll give you $.25 to get you started!

Actually you get paid $100 a day, so its more than minimum wage.

I didn't say I was going to roll it. I'll leave that up to someone else, if they choose to do so. It was more of a joke than a suggestion.

And you hit the nail on the head. They are buying a swing with this money. One swing. It looks just like the one between Turlington and Alexander near Cates. It will cost $2000. I'm not making this up. My RD told me that yesterday. Personally, I'd rather have a weekend of peace and quiet where I can sleep all day than a $2000 swing. Chill in my room? No thanks. Unlike Tucker, we don't have air conditioning. So of course the window stays open, and its still hot as balls in here. Only now, we will have to chill in our room listening to that gay music that those stores like to play. Even if I did like the music, I dont' want to hear it so loud from 7am to dusk. Especially 2 days in a row.

Sorcerer, you must be 18 or older.

The reason I destest it is that it is one is a long list of ways that NCSU has cheapened the academic atmosphere by having AE come. 100 bucks from 7 to dusk (9pm) is not good money 7 bucks an hour. Count in the time you have to audition it goes down. It is hidden as a contest or a fundraiser for ncsu but it is selling out on behalf of students. AE gets cheap labor out of the whole deal. What a load of crap---if NCSU is going to make partnerships with companies---make them with companies with something worthwile to offer students. (See centinial campus) Don't cheapen us with this bullshit

$7 an hour is still $7 an hour. not all of us have tech jobs

too bad I've got a test at 9:50, so I can't exactly make the "casting session"

Hey DirtyMonkey,
I'm just giving you a hard time! You are right about the music and I am sorry you are not air conditioned. You can still come chill in Tucker...we have AC and a ping pong table.

Maybe you should look at an audition as an interview. Since that is what it is. Then you tell me how many jobs you have had that you were paid to interview.

American Eagle is some of the best clothing out there.

I'm not saying that I HAVE to wear it, and I'm not saying that because it's "cool". I'm saying it because they actually are REALLY comfortable shirts etc.

I wish I could be in it, but I have prior engagements.

So basically, since i live in Alexander, I get to put up with hell for 2 1/2 days for a measley swing that doesn't even need to be replaced, while the university pockets a cool $8k for my inconvenience. Aren't I the lucky one!

I heard that they got moved to Turlington Quad, whatever the hell that is. Starting at 7am Friday morning.

I guess some law enforcement people read the roll the trees post. Right now there is an officer gaurding the area. Man that must suck to sit out there and wait for someone to throw a roll of toilet paper, especially when it probably wasn't going to happen anyways.

UPDATE! from an email received from the Provost's office...

American Eagle did not have enough people show up to the casting call today, so if you know of students that are interested they can show up tomorrow (Friday, April 12) between Turlington and Alexander at 10:30am to see if they can get cast.

They have to be able to work Friday 12-5, Sat & Sun 7am - dusk.

They will get paid $100 a day, get to keep their American Eagle clothes, and get fed breakfast and lunch.

Please pass on the word.

I hate to sound like a hypocrite (sp?) but if I'm gonna be 'involved' in it regardless, I might as well get free shit. It's a tough descision though... Do I get drunk all weekend or get up at 7am?

Here's where I've heard the money is going. NCSU gets $8k out of it, Central Campus gets $1500, and the NACURH 2003 Bid Team gets $500 as its IRC's office that is being used under T'Town. Some groups on campus are using this as a fundraiser and encouraging their members to go work it. Also, its a good experience for the people involved to see what an actual production is like. I don't have any problem with it, all you have to do is use a different entrance to your building and don't go downstairs too much during the day!

But you do have to make a 4 day commitment before you get anything (Fri 12-5, Sat and Sun and then Next Sun 7 am to dusk)
