Hi all, I'm an old school lurker and was really happy to find this thread. Thanks to everyone who's contributed; it was a really great place to start my engagement ring research.

Now down to business, my girlfriend isn't big into jewelry and especially not rings with any sort of rock. Her style would definitely be more non-solitaire, diamonds not riding high, that sort of thing (wouldn't want it catching on anything), but I don't want to go with just a fancy band since I think there should still be some sort of engagement ring feel to it. Do any of you ladies on here have a similar type of ring (or desire for that type of ring)? I really like these that I've found, am I missing anything in meeting what she'd want?

Not a girl, but I like those in the order that you posted them. Not a big fan of that last one.

i like the style and the second one is most beautiful to me. i agree i dont like the 3rd one as much. first one is nice

also consider if you think she would prefer a round or square cut diamond. some girls have very strong opinions on this!

I like the third one best, personally. But maybe just because of the round vs. square diamonds.

I think the 3rd one looks too masculine. Unless your future fianee is a middle linebacker in her spare time, I think it's going to look like a super bowl ring on her finger.

Her birthday is 12/31 so we're having a birthday/new years/anniversary (my hs BFF and his wife) party. I'm gonna pop the question in front of everyone then.

Hokay, so I picked up my ring yesterday. I've decided that I want to propose somewhere in the mountains in the next few weeks...but I have no idea where a good place would be. It's much too cold I think to go hiking...any ideas?

I proposed at the Grove Park Inn (Asheville). I would highly recommend it. It is expensive but you could just book for a night. There are many, many perfect places for a proposal at that place.

Raven Rock Overlook on the parkway near Blowing Rock. That's where I popped the question.

If you go up to Blowing Rock and hike the Boone Trail (I think it's called) their is a lookout tower at the top with panoramic views of Blowing Rock and Boone that is beautiful. It is very doable this year.

You just need to call someone in Blowingrock to get more info on the trail, but it is very well know.

Do you know that she would be comfortable with that? A lot of people prefer it to be an intimate moment instead of in front of everyone.

As for the mountains, it's 50 out in Asheville currently so it's not too cold to hike.

^ We talked about it before and she said she was cool either way, whether it was private or public. As long as I didn't just randomly ask while we're sitting on the couch watching tv or something.

She said yes btw.

Yeah but I forgot everything important:

I did not get on one knee

and I did not open the box

I pretty much went "You are just as pretty and sweet as you are pretty" and then handed her the box.

Location was an apartment complex where we first had a date, and I had a ribbon marked on the spot where we first had the relationship talk.

I dunno, the main thing I guess is to figure out what she wants and then do it that way.

It's all good man. I think when it comes down to it, if the girl is into you as much as the guy is into her, she'll be fine with however you do it....

She's a bit of a feminist, so to make things equal I'll be sporting an engagement ring too. I want to find something that's sort of antique like hers but is of course more like a simple band a dude would wear.

I believe those rings are sold at the same store that has those glass jars for her to put your balls in.

^^ Not that I have to justify myself to you, but explaining seems pertinent to the topic of engagement rings...

I'd describe myself as a feminist as well and the traditional historical idea of the engagement ring neither of us is cool with. For us the meaning of the ring is just a symbol of my commitment to her to marry her and spend my life with her. That being said it only makes sense that I have some sort of symbol from her as well. For us the engagement is the promise, the wedding is just the ceremony where we share/celebrate that promise with our closest friends and family (and make it all legal or whatever). During our ceremony we might not even exchange a second wedding band.

^ so really I'm basically getting my wedding band early. No diamond solitaire or anything like that, just a band. And since all of our finances are shared, yes I'd be buying myself a ring in the same sense that she bought herself her engagement ring.

I might try contacting this guy and see if he can make something based off of her ring. He does hand engraving like this:

Ah okay, that's pretty cool then. I was thinking you both had to get diamond rings for it to be equal and all that . My parent's wedding rings were mirror image gold wedding bands made by my mom's father, with grooves such that they could be aligned and would actually link together (no diamond ring).

nacstate...

what you are thinking of doing isn't weird at all! Coptic Egyptians propose to the girl with a diamond ring (which she wears on the right hand), then they have a small ceremony and the girl and the guy exchange wedding bands that they wear throughout the engagement period (on their right hands). At the wedding, the rings move from the right hand to the left indicating marriage.

Enjoy and congrats!!

got the appraisal done for insurance done today

$1k over purchase price

purchased in november.

(granted i expect they're going to over-appraise here, but part of me expected it to be like a car... and see the appraisal come in for like 70% of purchase price)

is it really boggling? it doesn't seem boggling at all to me

they sell a lot of other things that aren't bulk food....tvs, exercise equipment, mattresses stereos, cameras, they develop photos, you can purchase eye glasses and contacts there, CLOTHES (sometimes even 7 jeans), etc, etc, etc and places like sam's and costco get hit up a lot by people planning weddings if they're doing their own food or alcohol or flowers. and they do cakes for weddings/rehearsal dinners/showers/etc/etc

does not seem boggling at all.

Did you see the price? I guess I should have phrased it as.. "Why would CostCo even get into the business of selling million-dollar engagement rings?"

Boggling.
