hmm... I guess you looked at the $200 saturday $200,000 guaranteed tourney payouts?

Yeah, I got lucky on 2 steals preflop where I got called by good (but not great) hands, and my K6 and J7 prevailed over AJ and A3, respectively... I never did get AA throughout the whole tourney though... and I thankfully managed to lose ONLY half my stack early on when I had T6 on the BB, and the board was TT845, and the small blind had T5. The tournament started with almost 1200 people (my $200+15 buy in was won in a $9+1 satellite)... nice little $2,118 payout!

^huh? i thought he played it fine. sucks for him the stupid other guy that continued calling chasing a gut shot straight draw for fairly big bets got lucky and caught his card. and he only called one bet, which was the 4.75 at the end which was like 10% of the pot...definitely not a terrible call IMO.

i see my play got some people riled up...

I was actually in a pot limit game, and my preflop bet was the most i could bet, my second bet was very close to the pot (8 vs. like 8.80) and i thought the 10 dollar bet was good enough to get rid of him if he was on a draw...

in any case. calling the preflop bet, and still waiting for the 8 on his part was pretty n00bish imo...

i still ended up positive in the end, but whatever... that's poker i guess...

went to atlantic city bilagio. waited 5 hours to play. finally got a 1/2 no-limit table. raises pre-flop were generally around the 10 dollar level for a decent hand. around 10 hands in and i haven't played anything past the flop. Finally get KK as the dealer. Lady raises to 15. I raise to 30. She calls. Flop dealt something like Q 10 3 all off suit. She checks. I raise to 45 and she goes all in. These leaves me with another 40 or so to call her, so I pretty much have to. She turns over pocket queens. I got about 30 minutes of play out of 5 hours of waiting. Sucked ass.

^^ Sounds a lot like my first and only experience with PP. Just a little unlucky and was out before it really began...

Playing online just doesn't seem all that appealing to me. Not only do I not have the funds to throw around money over there, but something irks me about not being able to see who I'm playing against.

It would also help if I was any good tho

Atlantic City has the Borgata, not Bellagio... best place to play in AC, but you have to have more than $100 to play there... always be prepared to lose at least one buy in ($100 isn't much of a buy in when the table max is $300 either... I wouldn't sit down with less than $200 at one of those tables). Shitty beat, but again, you have to be prepared for beats and bring several buyins. On my last trip there, for the last 3 days, I never got a starting hand better than JJ (and even that one I had to fold preflop)... sometimes the cards just don't come.

And partypoker can be an excellent place to make money, but again you have to have enough for at least a few buyins, and you have to have patience.

JonTurner is teh horrible poker player!

PartyPoker is def. a good place to make money, but, like Turner said, you have to have a large enough bankroll to survive the dry runs and bad beats. I like to keep at least $300-$400 in my account when I cash out.

It also helps to not go buy $150 worth of DVDs and CDs every time you cash out $texas.

2 nights ago my family and i were playing a holdem no limit tourny.

so my uncle has pocket kings, my dad has pocket 7's. so deal ends up being (X=ramdon card cuz i dont remember) X, K,X, 7, 7. so my uncle calls all in thinking he has the game with full house kings. my dad calls him, and my uncle is like "now are you sure about this, cuz i won, just save your money" my dad was liike " yeah ill call you". so my uncle shows his full house, and reaches for the pot to bring the $$ in. my dad immedietly throws down his pocket 7's to get 4 of a kind. pretty much stunning my uncle. it was the 2nd hand of the tourny and my uncle went out.

it was pretty funny.our family likes to joke around a lot during plays. but this was a 6-7 person tourny with the pot like $50 or so.

going to AC for the first time this comming weekend.

what should i expect and where would be the best place to play?

seems like many of you guys seem to like the borgata. i plan on spending most of sat and sunday playing, but would like to probably play limit, like 2/4 or 3/6.

This is my first time playing in b&m cardroom, so any advice would be nice.

Also, what level of play should i expect? I feel pretty good about my game, and have done decent with turner's group. would the play be about the same?

Like Turner said, the Borgata is the place to play. The casino in general is just much nicer than any of the other ones at which I played. I noticed the players at the Borgata were much looser than players at the other Casinos or regular games around here. When I was playing at the Borgata the standard preflop raise was almost $20 every time, 10X the big blind. As far as advice goes, I would just make sure to know the rules ahead of time. You don't want some doucehbag trying to get you thrown out of the casino for folding out of turn or some shit like that.

If you're going to be playing 2/4 the Borgata games are usually loose, but Bally's and Tropicana are ALWAYS loose...

Still, the borgata will make you feel classier

Why is it that No Limit is more popular than Limit Hold Em'? I prefer Limit because if you take a bad beat you can still recover.

Limit is much more mechanical (play the good hands, in position). NL offers much more flexibility and allows you to play the people as well as the cards.

you can also get a lot more information from someone's bet in NL, and it's also easier to bluff, and/or take the pot early if someone else is on a draw...

That's why I like it anyway

hahaha, 5 words fellas.. low limit five card stud

this has to be the easiest money on the net.. such a simple game, yet so many bad players availible to rob

all you really need to know is DON'T CHASE, and basic poker knowledge will guide you the rest of the way

I've made over $200 at LOW limits playing this game so far this week, most of which was made while I was drunk and depressed about losing money at hold'em tables..

it really is that easy

empire poker just changed their tournament masters series....it used to be the top 5 single table points earners for a month and the top 5 multi table in a month would play in a tourney and the winner would get a WSOP seat. Now, they are doing the top 50 from each category. If you play tournaments regularly online, top 50 in these points each month is very realistic. Not a bad bonus if at the end of every month you get a chance to play in a 100 person tourney to go to the wsop. Just a heads up for everyone out there that plays a lot of tourneys. I have a referral code around somewhere, so if you decide to switch to empire and want to send a little extra cash my way just AIM me at triple r 7 or pm me here...if not thats cool

This is a classic example of a number of bad plays:

1. Not raising pre-flop with AQ.

2. Thinking AQ was good after the flop with 2 reraises (although one of them was bluffing on a draw).

3. Losing your stack on an unraised preflop pot.

I am certainly not claiming to be a super guru of poker, but I do know that I have developed a greater understanding of the game. I know some of you on here ask for tips sometimes, so here is the one that has helped me win the most $$:

Don't slow play. If you have a really good hand, and the flop helps you or you don't think it helps your opponent, then bet it. Hell, bet it anyway to find out where he stands. Here's an example. Let's say you get dealt KK, and you raise preflop (about 2.5x the size of the big blind is a good preflop raise, but if you are playing .25/.5 tables, then I would suggest raising to about $4 or so, cause $2.50 is just too weak.) You get a caller. Hopefully you have been at the table for a few hands and have seen whether or not your opponent is a decent player or whether he is among the MANY idiots online and/or in real life. Let's assume he is halfway OK. After he calls, you must "put him on something", ie decide what cards he might have to be calling this significant raise.

He most likely is playing either A-x, a lower pocket pair, high cards (KJ, etc), or maybe suited connectors. If it is a bad player, than who knows what the hell he has (maybe 7/2 off, you just don't know). Anyways, the flop comes 5H 6C QH. About 50% or even more of the people I play with will check this trying to induce a bet, which is a really bad play. You need to bet to find out where your opponent stands after the flop. If you bet and he calls, he is probably either playing the queen, or maybe on a straight or flush draw. As an aside, when I say bet, I don't mean bet like a pussy. I mean throw a bet out there around the pot size. The pot is probably around $8, so if you throw out a $2 bet, than your opponent would be a moron not to call if he was on a draw. Bet, $8, and see if he calls.

*******
Side note: A good player will fold a flush draw here IF you bet the size of the pot. If you bet less than the pot than he would be right to call. This all has to do with the fraction of $ you can win vs the fraction of $ you have to call, versus your actual odds of winning the hand. So in conclusion, don't bet like a girl. You will not win very much money that way, and it lets your opponent fish for cards.
*******

OK, back to the hand in question. You bet, and your opponent folds. Good for you, you took the pot down. If he calls, like we said before, he probably has top pair, or is on a draw. There is also the side chance that he has hit trips, which you ALWAYS need to keep in the back of your mind. I generally play on the philosophy online that if I raise big preflop, and there are no obvious straights, flushes, or a pair on the board, then I will usually keep betting like my hand is good. If I am playing someone who is REALLY tight and I get reraised, I might consider folding an overpair, but generally I'll think my hand is good.

From this point our example hand could go a million ways. If you think he is on a flush draw, and no hearts come out, keep betting strong (meaning the size of the pot). However, if a heart does come out, be prepared to fold.

OK, I really feel like I am rambling. Let me wrap this up. If you think you have the best hand, then bet it, and bet it hard. Making draws cheap is why people lose money. The end.

^ A ramble, yes, but a well reasoned one at least. You must bet good hands, especially when playing bad or inexperience players, otherwise you're bound to get outdrawn.

KK is for winning small pots against 1 opponent...

Ryan, since Empire is a mirror site of PartyPoker, can I just either 1) use my PartyPoker account for Empire or 2) switch to Empire and transfer my account?

I don't play online, but in a point-based tournament. look it up online: http://www.pokertaverns.com or http://www.ncpokerleague.com
Last Wednesday I was in the big blind and delt a 5-7 off suite. I knew I was going places with that beatuy!
Anyhow, 5 & 7 come on the flop ... with a 3. Not that pretty for most. There were four of us in the hand. check to me, i bet 200, everyone stays in. five comes on the turn, i bet 500 on the trips, two go out of the hand, and my buddy (small blind) beside me stays in and calls. then there's a seven on the river ... i got the boat. well, he bets like 2,000 on his straight (had it since the flop with a 4-6 in the hole, but slow played for a bigger pot ... plus, he and i play together all the time and he knows i don't bet a whole lot unless i actually have something). i raised over the top and stopped him short of going all-in by about 500 chips. (it's a points thing and he plays as regularly as i do. i knew i had the hand won, so i didn't want to take all he had and put him out that early.) it was hot -- he's regarded as one of the best players in our league (no. 5) and i smoked him.
wish it were for real money.

Haha, I played one of those tourneys about a month or so ago, since I was in Chapel Hill for the night. Those people are HORRIBLE. I imagine that they're the same ones I play on PartyPoker each night.

If you see two black guys at those tourneys, watch out. The Brown brothers are some crafty motherfuckers.
