this may only apply to DZAndrea - i think she's the only one close enough to care

they just opened a kayson's right down the street from me - closest decent bar to me - i've been there a number of times already - it's been open for a little less than a month and it's already been robbed 3x - i was in there the monday after thanksgiving when they were installing the security system after the first 2 large flatscreens were taken - i hope they don't shut down!

just wanted to bttt this thread, you know, for A-town.

btw, anyone else noticing an increased level of aggressiveness of the bums around town lately? maybe it's the cold, but i have been increasingly pestered and harrassed the past month whenever i go to work, to bars, etc. hell, i had 4 people approach me while i was in the drive-thru line at the McD's on Ponce last week. and i had to quit going to that popeyes at ponce/monroe after have a meth-addict couple from Tennessee yell at me for some change. straight up zombies in the A these day...

Went there to visit the aquarium (which was AWESOME) and stayed at the Omni CNN Center (which also is awesome), but otherwise I didn't like Atlanta. We walked around downtown a bit and was bugged by aforementioned bums sooo often. Friday night we wanted to "go out" so we asked our waitress where to go, and she suggested Underground clubs.

We walked down there, and in hindsight were lucky to get out of there with our wallets and lives. Went to the club part of it and left immediately after figuring out it was all gangbangers and shady types. Oh, and did I mention it was pouring rain at this point.

We drove through midtown and looked around and then went to Buckhead, drove through neighborhoods, etc. It was nice, but basically like a Cary with a few big buildings and nicer, more crowded homes.

I never saw any place with the hot altanta nightlife...except for the shitty underground area. I saw a few bars and one other club, but none of them were together in groups of bigger than two.

Where are the places Atlanta people "go out", for future knowledge, cause we certainly had a hard time finding it downtown, midtown, and in Buckhead.

yeah, downtown is a terrible place to go out. midtown has a lot of good places, around crescent st. which is just off of peachtree. the virginia highlands neighborhood has a more laid-back selection of bars if that's more your speed. i love atlanta, but it's not a good place for wandering around aimlessly - kinda need to know where to go.

for reals, underground was probably the worst advice anyone could have given you. there's a bunch of stuff just north of where you were staying on peachtree rd, you went in the wrong direction.

no one's mentioned Little 5 Points/Candler Park, its where all the hipsters hang out, if that's your thing. plus its right up the street from the highlands.

the downtown decatur area is pretty nice.

midtown is cool.

buckhead isn't my thing, but there's some super fratastic bars. i live here for the convenience, but that will probably be changing soon.

in addition to the major districts, there's all sorts of little pockets of neighborhood places to hang out. atlanta is cool like that.

Buckhead hasnt really been fratastic in my view in a LOOOONG time. We used to come down to Atl from Knoxville in college to go out 10 years ago and it was then... then it got thugged out, then it turned in dive bars right before I moved here two years ago. Now everything is gone while rebuilding but still a few fun places. I love Hole in The Wall, its a dumpy dive club, but fun, and i know a lot of peeps that work there, East Andrews is fun for shows if the right band is in... Makos was the shit but its closed while they are rebuilding. To me midtown is what buckhead used to be, very stuffy.

i'd say that's a fair assessment, actually. except for Fado, you can't tell me that place isn't fratastic on a saturday night.

Fado's is more than most places.

Elbow Room is a dive
Hole in the Wall
Moondogs is meh
East Andrews - depends on the band
Makos - wasnt at all, exact opposite

hah - the frattiest places i've ever been to have been in buckhead...that whole area around five paces is the worst of them

the one and only time i've been in five paces (during the 08 MLB playoffs), every single guy in there had on dockers, pink oxfords, and deck shoes

yeah, 5 paces, red door, pool hall, and mcduffs are all very very fratty. not that that's bad or anything, but callin' a spade a spade. i will say, though, there is typically some nice tail at rio grande. and fados for that matter...

looking for a decent place for vday dinner on either the 13th or 14th - browsed through open table's list and picked a few http://www.opentable.com/promo.aspx?m=16&pid=102 - not sure if we'll cook a nice meal at home or go out - figured if it's going to be the latter though might as well make a reservation soon

pura vida - http://www.opentable.com/promo.aspx?m=16&pid=102
silk - http://www.silkrestaurant.com/index/events
blackstone - http://www.blackstoneatlanta.com/support/pagepics/ValentinesDay2009.pdf

any other recommendations instead though - would like to keep it under $150 or at least close with a ~$30 bottle of wine/tax/tip

Ahh, pura vida, that's in my 'hood. we've had a lot of work events there, never been too impressed with the food. but the atmosphere is probably pretty good for a laid-back-yet-classy valentine's dinner...and if you really want to impress your wife, y'all should head down ponce to the clermont lounge after dinner

i'm sure it's the same in every crew in ATL - the clermont lounge is mentioned as the inevitable end point of the night but it rarely if ever materializes

thanks for the heads up on pura vida - so far we are leaning towards making a brie cheese and croissant app. and some cheese fondue - followed with me grilling something unique - but we might perhaps still go out

i, on the other hand, love pura vida. their empanadas with the vinegar are freaking amazing. plus they make dark and stormy's there, which is awesome and rare as fuck in atlanta

ate at a great cheap place (well, relatively cheap, $9-$20), REALLY good food, and a great location, Urban Flats at Lindbergh.

the hummus appetizer is good (they give you 4 different types, the olive is the really good one)

the "chicken of the wood" and buffalo chicken flat are really good

I'll be at the game - at the top, in the corner, burning up in a red sport coat. Should be good times! Definitely gonna sneak in some vodka or something, as I have a feeling that the pack this season is even harder to watch in person...

I have been looking for a good BIG used bookstore...

Eagle Eye over near Decatur is good, really cheap, nice owner, but not all that big.

I might end up going to the game after all, my GF is from a big family of GT alumni

^^ i ordered mine on-line at stubhub.com. there are plenty of seats available there for less than $30.

as far as used book stores, there's one on N. Highland Ave just south of the intersection with North Ave. Not sure the exact name, though, but it has a pretty decent selection. I'm sure there are others too...

we could hear lowe yelling throughout the entire game on the other side pretty clear

we were also shocked by how few students were there - especially with only 1min. to game time - hell, half of our side was taken up by the baseball team and they only stayed for their halftime display

Does anyone happen to know if the state of Georgia will allow you to draw unemployment if you take a voluntary leave of absence in lieu of being laid off? The DOL website doesn't really say.

most if not all voluntary leave programs involved some sort of severance and you aren't legally allowed to draw unemployment while accepting severance i thought

i would guess that its no as well, but i do know if you are cut back to working 3 out of 4 weeks per month, you can draw for the week you aren't working. i figured it was worth looking into. my work is taking volunteers for LOA and i have to let them know by tomorrow. i guess i'll just keep working and hope for the best.
