After spending most of the day shooting different guns suppressed, I've been contemplating how to put cans on almost everything I own. The only things I'll buy from here on out that aren't suppressor compatible are shotguns.

Which model do you want exactly?

What's your budget?

There are a couple in shops around here, but I always know I can't afford them so I don't bother looking.

You can get a metro barrell, http://www.metrogun.com/ that will make a shotgun much tamer.

I wonder what sort of sighting in (if any) is done on Mosins .

Over the weekend, I was able to pick off 10x10" chunks of cinder-block from 100-110 yds, open sights, never sighted in, no mods, no bayonet, no elevation adjustment. I mean it was like 1 in 4 and a little high, but that's still better than I expected

Quote :
"Although some 91/30s were sighted in at 100 meters, most were zeroed at the factory or arsenal for the expected battle distance of 300 meters. Sometimes 91/30s were zeroed with the pig-sticker bayonet attached, and sometimes they weren’t. Sometimes they were sighted in with light ball ammo, and sometimes they weren’t. This “is it live, or is it Memorex” system causes a lot of today’s accuracy problems with the 91/30."

------------------

I shot some steel-case .223 out of my PSA AR and did a little better. Open sights on a rest (an old dilapidated bedside table thing while sitting on a half-height cinder block) and crouching.

USMC bro-in-law tells me they had to do 500 yds with iron sights

i love shooting military style peep sights. i put them on anything i can. i've got skinner sights on my 44 mag and 30-30 leverguns, tech sights on an old glenfield 60, mojo sights on my swedish mauser, an AR with a carry handle, an M1 Garand, and an M1 carbine.

ha, i love everything you just said.

ive put skinners on lever actions before, and mojos on mausers.

and i just put a carry handle on my AR except one of my marine friends said never to call them that?

of course my garands and m1s are untouched, and i have some m14 from the 80s locked up somewhere that was converted to semi auto. love the sights on all of them.

its like being obsessed with analog guitar gear or old cars. if it has a computer in it, it sucks.

i highly doubt that. once a machine gun, always a machine gun.

you probably have an M1A or other commercial receiver that was built with GI parts

$40 for a Glock mag?

Either things are way worse than I thought or you have been looking in the wrong places, other mags are plenty available at normal prices.

Yep, part of the annual(ish) rifle qual. It's from the prone, on torso targets. I've actually hit 9/10 before, although 8 or even 7 would be a more normal day.

The wretched trigger and abusive cleaning practices inflicted upon an M-16 out of the armory are probably as much of a hindrance as the iron sights, though.

I haven't qual'd in couple years. I think they may be using ACOG for the whole course , now.

I can't find a 22rnd G22 mag anywhere in stock for less than $40. The places that I do see new 22rnd G22 magazines are asking more and often require shipping. After tax, I paid ~$42.50 for each mag. Cheapest I've seen online is still ~$50 with shipping.

A lot of these larger capacity magazines come with huge price tags. I've seen some listed for as much as $60 each. I don't see prices coming down any more on these, so $40 seemed reasonable.

Now the 15rnd G22 magazine is about $20 and can be found just about anywhere...

You boys and girls know a lot about your scopes. I read about this scope and heard good things about it. I'm still looking for a scouting scope with LER for my Mosin. I already have 1" rings.

http://www.opticsplanet.com/hawke-1x32-crossbow-ir-waterproof-riflescope-sr-reticle.html?gclid=CKK70v2z5rwCFY1r7AodbxUAfA&ef_id=UlYs-AAABEXpuG5x:20140225040904:s

The only thing stopping me from getting the Leuopld is the price...
http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-25x28mm-m8-ier-scout-rifle-scope.html

Im' thinkin this is definitely a you get what you pay for scope...

i have no idea what a 1x32mm LER scope would do besides severely limit your field of view

if all you want is that corny "scout rifle" look, then knock yourself out with that crossbow scope

if you really want to improve the sights on your mosin, then buy a set of Mojo Sights

if you want a good LER scout scope, get the leupold

Anyone up for a Wake County range trip this weekend?

I'm thinking about purchasing a 9mm handgun as a range toy; mainly because I'd like to have something to plink with that's a little cheaper on ammo. I'm leaning towards an M&P 9 Pro Core right now because it's fairly ambidextrous and comes with raised sights for a can. Are there any other guns I ought to be considering as a southpaw?

I have a FNP-45 and love it for being ambidextrous, but I want to try a different make just to have some variety. I have a couple of glocks - a G23 and a G30, and a springfield 1911 currently for semiautos.

I don't like the G23. Not sure if it's the fullsize glock I don't like or the 40 round, but the gun just isn't that accurate for me. I can shoot circles around it with the compact G30, which doesn't make all that much sense. Maybe it's operator error, but either way I think I want to get rid of it and try something in 9mm.

Their prices have always been high, they always seem to be the go-to for media relations in CLT which helps them get your average joe in the door compared to other LGS or pawn shops. Or did they do something else?

so i called hyatt's yesterday to confirm that they had the M1A Loaded that i wanted and to confirm the price. the guy on the phone told me they had one and gave me a price of $1699. i asked if that was out the door. he said that it was $1699 plus tax. i asked about their saturday hours and if they'd hold the rifle for me since i was driving from wilmington. he said they would hold it a day. i confirmed the price of $1699 plus tax once again before thanking him and hanging up.

so i got there today and told the first employee who offered to help me that they were supposed to be holding an M1A Loaded for me. he asked my name and i gave it, even though i had never given it nor been asked for it on the phone. anyway, while he was gone to the back "to get the rifle out of the hold safe" i spotted the M1A Loaded walnut/non-stainless that we discussed on the phone. another employee offered to help and i explained that the other guy was gone to get the rifle they were holding, but that it was the one on the shelf behind him. anyway, he handed me the one off the shelf to check out. i looked it over and then the first guy came back and said it wasn't back there and they must not have marked it to be held. this was the first thing that kinda perturbed me. i guess i just got lucky that it didn't sell late yesterday or this morning while i was driving 3.5 hrs to get there. whatever, it's in my hands and about to be mine.

of course the tag said something like $1900, and i told the guy the price i was quoted on the phone. he went in back to check that and came back and confirmed $1699. i pointed out a small dent on the comb of the buttstock and tried to get a free magazine out of him for it, but he wouldn't do it. that's not really a big deal and i admit i was just trying to see what i could get. i told him to go get the paperwork. i filled it out and told him while he was doing the paperwork that i would check out the reloading section.

after laughing at their primer and powder prices, i checked to see if they had an RCBS .308 dies. they only had the small base set ($50) and the AR set ($70 iirc). they had a sign that said if you didn't see what you want, ask them to check in back, so i went back to the guy selling me the rifle and asked him to check on a regular full length 2-die RCBS set for .308 ($37). he got their supposed reloading guru who confirmed that i didn't want the small base dies. he went in back and confirmed that they didn't have any regular FL .308 RCBS brand dies. when he came back out he saw that i was buying an M1A and proceeded to spend several minutes arguing with me about why i needed small base dies for that particular rifle. he finally realized that he was getting on my nerves and he let up.

now the guy helping me with the rifle asks if i intend to put a bipod on the rifle. i gave him a quick "no" and tried to nip that in the bud, but he proceeds to try to sell me an $80 rail thingy that mounts where the front sling swivel is. i patiently wait for him to finish explaining it before confirming that i still don't want to put a bipod on the rifle.

so, it's finally time to pay for the rifle. the guy shows me the receipt he's written up and goes through the charges on it. i was expecting $1699 plus tax. there is a $12 "Brady Fee". i inquire about said fee, which i have never heard of and was not mentioned on the phone or at any time during the whole sales process. he gives me a line of bullshit about them having the choice to send paperwork in to the ATF or storing it on-site and that this fee is a result of them choosing to store the paperwork on-site. if this were any other firearm, i would've left right then. i told him that fee wasn't mentioned on the phone and that i confirmed $1699 plus tax twice on the phone. he tells me i'm SOL. i told him not to worry about me ever returning to the store, counted out the bills, and left with my rifle.

long story short: Hyatt's is a pretty typical over-priced LGS full of know-it-all douches. i expect that at the LGS, especially one that caters to the less-gun-savvy crowd. however, i do not expect to have made-up fees added to my bill when i've driven 3.5 hrs after confirming an out-the-door price. this is a classic bait-and-switch.

haha i feel like a dickhead for directing you to them.

theyve brady fee'd me on a glock 21 and a benelli m3, but they didnt on a henry golden boy and an 1895 marlin.

oh well, ive been to hyatts many times and its hugely important which salesperson you get. there are a few guys there i avoid like the plague, and now that you mention it i would never buy a very expensive gun there because they always have a ton of handling marks.

the benelli for example i wouldnt leave until they reblued the mag tube; i made them do it twice too.

they do some other stupid shit too if you watch them, for example ive seen folks there several times trying to buy a gun and theyve recently moved... so their drivers license address doesnt match the address they actually live at, and the hyatts guys dont want to lose a sale or wait till the next day.

they take these people to one of their computer stations and have them go to the NCDOT page right there in the store and request a duplicate license with their new address on it "because their gonna have to do it eventually anyway," then they photocopy it and attach the receipt with the new address. i mean it makes sense but it also costs 10 or 15 bucks and the folks usually looked terrified during the whole process because theyre so damn pushy.

"oh dont worry we clear our browser history every day..." referring to their credit card numbers and socials they just punched in. whatever.

at least you got a rather hard to find gun for an average price? helluva drive.
