Last night I drove west, pretty much straight into the sun, from mid-afternoon until out-and-night. And it was maybe the worst driving experience of my life. I was driving in the Midwest, so there was nothing but flat plains all around and the big glaring sun straight ahead. And the road was usually oriented so that the sun was positioned between my two visors, meaning I couldn't block it out except with the rear view mirror (which didn't really work that well.) I wore sunglasses, but it didn't make the task easy or painless. And of course, since I was driving west I slowed the sunset down, because I was chasing the goddamned sun against my will.

Eventually I pulled into a rest area when it was almost totally dark, and wore sunglasses into the bathroom because the light was too bright. And for the rest of the trip I put my rear-view mirror down, because the headlights from the folks behind me burned my eyes. And I disliked it when people passed me, because their lights in my side-mirror hurt my eyes too. I was seriously worried about permanent sight-damage, but my vision is more or less back to normal now. /blog
