No upgrade path from 7 to 8. We get 7.8 instead, which at least has all the features I actually care about (read: resizing tiles)

you know, for as much as Apple is all like "300 new features" every time they iterate the iphone, the WP8 announcement seems kinda underwhelming. but then when i think about it, i really don't feel like i'm missing out on anything the iphone offers.

Yeah, and I'm pretty disappointed that my Lumia 900 isn't getting most (if not all) of these

I don't get the idea that people have that all apps made after wp8 comes out won't work on current hardware. If wp7 apps work fine on wp8 wouldn't App devs just keep on making wp7 apps unless the actually need the new features?

It's because instead of developing a Windows Phone 7 app, people are going to develop Metro apps for Win8 and then just port them easily to Windows Phone 8.

That leaves those of us on team WP7 a little out in the cold.

I'd really like to see MS "do right" by those of us who actually got Lumia 900 and Titan 2s. I still love my phone, but having a big marketing push in April only to EOL the platform in June is kind of bullshit.

^Amen to that

^^I just bought a Lumia 900 off craigslist yesterday for mega cheap. Switching from Sprint to StraightTalk with it. Just the service switch will pay for the cost of the phone by the time Win8 phones hit the market.

For <$250, the Lumia 900 is a pretty cool phone. It's killing me looking for an iPhone 4 for the fiance and the stupid prices (people asking NEW prices for their 2 year old scratched up phones)

I can tell you that is very unlikely. The reason for the compat break is hardware, not software.

WP7 is a CE kernel, WP8 is the WinRT kernel. The hardware needed to run the latter well is a little higher, and the underlying hardware platform is different. A port to WP7 would require someone to write platform hardware drivers, which isn't impossible, but it hasn't ever been done to my knowledge in windows (mobile or otherwise) by a third party without access to development hardware.

Understandable. I guess my main reasoning for why I could see it happening is that I'd imagine any baseline Windows Phone 8 would probably be fairly similiar to the 900. Obviously the higher end stuff will have more cores, better screens, etc. but I could see an update to the 710 just basically being something dumb like a slightly modified 900.

Fully admit I might be completely offbase on this though

I take a lot of pictures with my phone. I'm gonna wait and see about the improvements to the new iphone's camera, but if it doesn't come close to the Nokia 920, I'm gonna jump to Nokia / WP8.

"Nokia's new Lumia 920 smartphone is missing an SD card slot, but that was intentional.

Speaking with tech news site PC Pro, Nokia executive VP Kevin Shields said that a memory card slot would have ruined the clean design of the phone.

"We started with the premise that we wanted an uncompromised physical form," Shields told PC Pro. "To put an SD card slot in it would have defiled it."

The Lumia 820 comes with only 8GB of internal storage but includes a microSD card slot that can handle up to 32GB worth of data. The 920 already comes with 32GB of storage built in, so Nokia also seems to have felt that an SD card slot was simply not needed.

"Most people aren't using the storage in their phone, anyway," Shields added
"

After ALL THAT shit-talking about Apple for not including removable storage in their iOS devices, Google and Nokia now are coming up with lame-ass excuses to do the same thing. Or maybe "Most people aren't using the storage in their phone, anyway"??

Oh and the battery? Non-replaceable

how many other phones will WP8 be on? because i was under the impression that nokia is in a sad state of affairs and i'm not sure what WP8 offers that is any better than iphone/android devices...and as such, i see them as relatively irrelevant

Noen, so how did the switch to Straight Talk worked out for you? Kind of thinking about the same thing. It would save me like $1,200 per year, more than enough to cover a couple of new smartphones every two years if i feel the need to upgrade. The onyl downside I see so far is losing the picture MMS (i dont really want to JB)

At least with the Nokia WP7 phones a non-replaceable battery and no SD card slot is the norm.

Then again, SD support was so terrible in WP7 that (seemingly) only one or two phones actually supported it and when they did, just having an SD card could make your phone wildly temperamental.

LOL Nokia.. The camera on this phone is so good, they need a DSLR to simulate it!

Quote :
"The footage was intended to support the firm's claim that its technology helped reduce image blur. It was shown at a press conference on Wednesday to support Nokia's boast that the Lumia 920 featured the best smartphone image quality on the market.

The Verge's article said: "too bad it's faked".

Nokia's blog acknowledged the problem in a post titled "An apology is due".

"

I am a big fan of the Hero GoPro ads specifically because they are always shot on the actual devices.

Also, one of recent issue of the Time magazine had all photography done with mobile phones.. looked pretty darn good, only on full spreads could one tell the photos were taken with a mobile phone

Hey, are ANY of these Sprint?

If, not I will completely abandon MS products completely, even right down to the next Xbox. I should NOT have to switch carriers to get the phone I want.

These

or the Samsung above?

LTE and WCDMA are radio technologies that Sprint's network uses. whether Sprint decides to carry the phones is another issue.

i don't think it's microsoft's fault...it's that developers don't want to waste their time developing apps for a platform that has so little market share

or so that was my understanding

It more of MS fault. The made a OS that was gonna be non-backwards compatible, ie., WM7 apps will not work with WM8, which is fucking retarded. Then they send out an email saying if you are a developer there is a potential to make 80% off of your apps, instead of the standard 70% like this will encourage developers to create apps.

Basically, MS made a small market by doing this.

You all seem fairly up to date with all this, does anyone know if Evernote will be on WP8?

I see they have a 7.5 app, have they confirmed for 8? We use it a lot, so that's kind of a deal breaker for me. I have to put in my purchase request this month for a new phone, but enough people were curious about Lumia pones so the told us we could request to defer till nov. Trying to decide what to do, anyone know?

If not its iPhone5 for me, and it seems pretty boring

All wp7 apps will work on wp8

I'm sure they will upgrade to wp8 eventually, but you won't miss out on any of your apps if it doesn't happen immediately.

To be honest, Those new HTCs look nicer to me than the Nokia. The 920 is just a little too bulky for me.
