Yeah, I never found Skype that useful before because you had to have it open and running so except for a scheduled call with gf or family, i never used it. Now it should be something I use frequently.

How much heavier does it feel than the 900? Also, how is Bluetooth volume compared to the 900?

25g heavier than 900

Add 10 pennies or 5 nickels to a 900 for the 920 weight

Its noticeably heavier than the 900.

and I don't have any Bt devices to try out the BT volume, but my guess is its a lot louder. The volume range goes much louder for everything else on the phone, so I'd be surprised if BT audio wasn't as well.

someone here at work upgraded their old samsung winphone7 to a nokia 920. compared to my iphone 4s the extra weight wasnt a big deal, but the extra thickness was kind of annoying.

still no shipping status for my 8X

was hoping "shipped by 11/13" meant "possibly shipping before 11/13"

Of course they'll ship it when they get it, but the expected ship date was yesterday. Hence, my question.

Hilarious. I guess the reason why I the AT&T stores can't keep the Lumia 920 on the shelf fast enough for me to grab one locally is that they're so obscure.

well, looks like Verizon botched this whole preorder process. they're scheduled to launch in stores today. what was the point of preordering again? still no status updates on shipping and the expected ship date is still the 13th (2 days ago). also, just called the North Hills VZW store and they haven't even received any 8X's in stock. They don't know where they are either! How much more shitty can a product launch get?

after waiting patiently, I decided to go ahead and call VZW to see what the hell is going on. after some explanation (blah, blah, blah, stock is in New Jersey, blah, blah, blah, Sandy...) I got them to cancel my preorder and send my phone with Saturday delivery to my house. As long as we don't have another Frankenstorm between today and tomorrow, I *should* have a new phone tomorrow!

VZ...Since when does "preorder" mean you get the phone later than everyone else?

I got my wife a white 920 this weekend from the ATT store. So far she loves it. For those that have one do you recommend a case? She generally keeps hers in her purse.

apparently those lumia 920's are built like tanks and have little to no damage when dropped.

^What it eventually took to destroy the thing: http://youtu.be/E3c8il_Q6SU

Survived being run over by a car, hit like a baseball, and tossed 20-30ft in the air.

Finally bit the bullet being thrown as hard as possible, screen first, into a concrete light pole base.

^Not really.

Create a VM somewhere (or use an old computer), install android-x86 on it, buy ConnectMe remote desktop app for Windows Phone, and you magically have instant access to any "must have" android apps.

I ordered the 16GB Nexus 4 a few days ago, but if I can re-sell it for $500 I might do so and order Verizon's version of the 8X off contract, which is unlocked. With the 8X I can serve out my Verizon contract until it ends in April, and then switch to Straight Talk or another prepaid plan.

However, people using the Nexus 4 in my area are getting LTE-equivalent speeds on T-Mobile's HSPA+ network. If I can live with the spotty coverage, it's really tough to beat that $30/month deal.

Got my free wireless charging pad yesterday. Plugged it in, sat the phone on it and bam it works.

woke up this morning blinking at me. Apparently it broke at some point charging overnight and now it won't work at all. Really disappointing.

My coworker got the HTC and now is probably going to have to return it because there is no PDF program except Microsoft's PDF Reader which doesn't work for drawings or wide format anything.

Kinda glad I got the iPhone, no way I could live without being able to open a PDF.

thanks for the suggestion, but he wasn't sure how to do that and playing with his phone as a previous WP7 owner I'm not sure either.

I get an email, there is a PDF attached, I click to download... how do I open in a browser?

edit: If I go to one in the browser it just downloads and prompts you to go to the store to download an app.

I don't know either, I just made the suggestion. I use to have a Windows Phone 7 but now have an Android, and the only reason is that I broke my HTC Arrive and Sprint does not have any other WPs so I just got an GSIII until next year. I will go back to WP when they update their selection.

Adobe made a reader for WP7 so I'm assuming there will be something eventually, I'm just a little surprised they didn't cover what, to me at least, is an important feature/function of a phone.

i assume it used native code that is not available in WP8

^Native code is first allowed on WP8. It's not available because Adobe chose to limit the app to WVGA screens (800*480), which only a couple of WP8 handsets have.

There is the Microsoft PDF Reader that you can download from the Store, but it apparently really blows. My guess is that Adobe will update their app in the next month or so.

Yeah that's what he used, it doesn't work for drawings

(And is shitty for even a normal basic 8.5x11" paper)

The problem with hoping that Adobe updates theirs is that he only has 10 days left to return

"Using the Exchange ActiveSync protocol to connect smartphones to Google's services was a very convenient way to get contacts, calendars, and especially push email set up. More recently, its importance has lessened as smartphones have had built-in auto-setup for Google accounts, but it's still disappointing to see it go away. The situation on Windows Phone may be more dire, with Google deciding not to offset the end of EAS with apps as it has on iPhone.

That's just for new people right, or does that include existing accounts?

Edit: yeah still supported. I don't really care, I use gmail but there is no reason really I have to.

Oh, iPhone uses something else so it doesn't even matter to me.

This is not as big of a deal as they are saying. Current EAS people will still be supported, and Microsoft can just improve their tools to migrate people from gmail to outlook.com and use IMAP IDLE push so they can still keep their gmail email address and get push emails. The people who use full google apps are just a small percent.

This is a good reason why yo should buy a domain and get an email so you can be ecosystem agnostic.

hadn't seen a wp8 device with a physical keyboard so I got my mom a dell venue pro. should be a huge upgrade from the nokia semi-smart phone she has now. if this thing will run activeX controls she'll be ecstatic as she needs that for her real estate stuff. live tiles and very large text just seemed the way to go for old folks just getting into real smart phones.

WP doesn't support active x controls AFAIK, and the venue pro isn't a bad phone. Most of the issues with it were ironed out with updates, although it is an end of life product and dell is pretty shitty about supporting peripheral devices like phones and tablets.
