Actually, the much more amusing thing is seeing liberals cheering on businesses that are trying to affect laws and regulations. Basically everyone in this argument is completely backwards of where they would normally be.

"they wanted to come to nc, and they still will. they're getting fantastically free publicity before they do. so what if they "expect more" from a state? they either care about the issues they claim, or they don't. at least in a us state there's a better chance of laws being overturned. have they even made a statement to these other countries, or done any single thing to try to improve the issues there?

i don't need any handholding, you're right. i get your angle, i just don't agree... but that's what the internet is for
anyways that's all i got. i actually agree with you guys on a lot of this hb2 stuff... i just don't trust companies that seem to jump on political waves... and that's how i see some them (paypal, specifically)"

so your overall point is that you're assuming that they're only backing out of a branch in NC because they feel they'll make more money by backing out of an agreed upon plan?

you also didn't have an answer to the "the US is better than countries with awful human rights records" point.

yes

and i think that "point" is garbage at best. if expectations and standards are so high for the US, PayPal is a US company... shoildn't they be held to the same standards you suggest?

Protesting or boycotting against HB2 isn't discriminating against any religion

^^ Businesses aren't altruistic. If they thought they could gain favor in those other countries by appealing to a populace that is largely rejecting the religious-based discriminatory laws as we are here they would.

I don't think anyone is praising their selflessness... but rather their ability to put pressure on the supporters of what we perceive as an unjust law.

I think this is the key when discussing PayPal's decision. The US majority favors LGBT rights and protection so PayPal is siding with the majority (good for business and good for image). In countries such as Saudi Arabia and Malaysia the populace is overwhelmingly against the LGBT community so PayPal continues to operate in these locations.

Sure you can say PayPal shouldn't hold other 3rd world shithole countries to the same standards, but they already aren't.

Despite how liberals have reacted to HB2, the bill doesn't endorse stoning and whipping homosexuals and transexuals. Nobody is suggesting PayPal should tell Malaysia they need to start accommodating bathroom needs of gender fluid mentally disabled people, but suggesting that public lashings for homosexual activity isn't good, maybe then the condescending rant about values would mean something?

Again, this isn't about "values", as always with the left, it's about virtue signaling.

Quote :
"It’s noticeable how often virtue signalling consists of saying you hate things. It is camouflage. The emphasis on hate distracts from the fact you are really saying how good you are. If you were frank and said, ‘I care about the environment more than most people do’ or ‘I care about the poor more than others’, your vanity and self-aggrandizement would be obvious. . . . Anger and outrage disguise your boastfulness."

Dumb motherfuckers in the NC Senate said to be contemplating a voter referendum for an HB2 amendment.

the only hope for our state is massive pain for the GOP in November.

So I was in Charlotte and was told the US74 freeway upgrade had to halt construction due to funding issues from the state.

At least NC is working hard to keep the state straight and the trans folk out of the bathrooms!!!!!

I'm only disappointed in how biased the media is, and how stupid #outrage culture is.

Regarding the actual "issue", I really don't give a shit. I do like calling out virtue signaling from attention seekers pretending like they give a shit cause I think that is a fake, smug, and shitty thing to do.

Also, regarding the actual bill... If you actually have the sex surgery, you can change your birth certificate to say your new sex (doesn't seem too difficult of a step if you are willing to butcher your body due to a mental disorder).

its a pretty difficult task if you were born in a county in another state that you have to travel to that has judges who don't like to change birth certificates

Most of your points have already been addressed in this thread, but anyways:

Quote :
"I'm only disappointed in how biased the media is"

Sometimes there aren't 2 equal sides to an issue. Please give a few examples of why this law is good

Quote :
"I do like calling out virtue signaling from attention seekers"

Assume for a minute that the people upset with this issue sincerely think it's a bad law and unfairly targets certain groups unnecessarily. How would you like to see them go about addressing the issue?

Quote :
"you can change your birth certificate"

(1) This is not as easy for everyone as you make it out to be
(2) Even if it is, that's not what most people are arguing about. The argument is that there's not good reason to have that be a requirement in the first place
(3) This is a very small part of what makes most things about the law shitty

Fired the Chairman today and replaced him a GOPe stooge/has-been. I'm sure Robin Hayes will really be able to motivate the grassroots to get out and go door to door, make phone calls, put up yard signs and do all the little things McCrory is going to need to win in the fall. Negative credibility points today.

Quote :
"US Justice Department: HB2 violates federal Civil Rights Act

RALEIGH: U.S. Justice Department officials Wednesday notified Gov. Pat McCrory that House Bill 2 violates the U.S. Civil Rights Act.

The department gave state officials until Monday to address the situation “by confirming that the State will not comply with or implement HB2.”

The letter says HB2, which pre-empted Charlotte’s anti-discrimination ordinance, violates Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, which bars discrimination in education based on sex.

If that determination is upheld, North Carolina could lose millions in federal school funding. During the current school year, state public schools received $861 million in federal funding.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates."

No, I'm mostly against tax breaks with only a few exceptions.

But what I am against is legislators threatening private businesses who are doing nothing but disagreeing with specific legislation. That's some third world dictator shit

Drop back and punt on the solarbees. basically delaying or repealing the Jordan lake rules while funding a mussel release program to clean up nutrients.

Add to the mix that these are non-native mussels, but of course there have never been deleterious effects on nutrient cycling or ecosystem services by introducing such organisms... Trophic cascade anyone?

I was gonna say its gonna take something like another massive fish kill or pfiesteria outbreak or a widespread boil advisory in the Town of Cary to wake these people up.

But then I did some back reading on Toledo's water woes in Lake Erie. You probably remember they had that algae producing neurotoxins or some nasty shit.

While they have developed some programs to reduce Ag nutrients into Lake Erie, most seem to be voluntary or Not enforced, instead opting to spend 100s of millions on water treatment upgrades with no guarantee that they will be able to handle the problem. Sad!

[Edited on June 4, 2016 at 10:28 AM. Reason : we couldn't convince Republicans to address our problems during Pfiesteria outbreak, it's useless]
