Sure it's not the NCAA, but it's still awesome to win in the post season.
They stomped UCLA earlier in the year really bad. I wonder if it has ever happened that the winner of the NIT beat the winner of the NCAA in the regular season.
Man I am looking forward to next season. 3/29/2007 8:28:25 PM |

Yeah actually I did watch basketball all of last year. http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/preview?gameId=270410277
They won by five but they lead by almost 20 at one point. WVU is a really really good team.
Quote : | "there is nothing awesome about winning the NIT" |
You know if NCSU would have won the NIT there would be about 50 threads about how great we were and how great of a building block it is for next season. It just so happens that WVU won a close game against NCSU, and won the tournament. Both teams are in a pretty similar situation with really young teams. But whatever... there is no reason to hate.3/29/2007 8:44:46 PM |

That might be true if all 65 teams were chosen according to who the top 65 teams are.
The whole automatic bid thing kind of kills that though.3/29/2007 10:41:48 PM |

31 one of those were automatic bids
the other 34 were at-large invites
hence

my bad
i should say the ncaa feels 34 teams deserve to be in the big one more and some shadow organization feels the other teams deserve to be in the big one and they force the ncaa to let them in through strong arm tactics

Right, and by winning the NIT tournament by stringing together 5 wins over semi-quality teams they proved they are better than at least a handful of the teams the NCAA selected to participate in the NCAA tournament.
Hence the reason it proves they are one of the top 25-35 teams in the nation this year. IMO, i'd rank them around 28-30.3/30/2007 7:50:09 AM |

I'm curious why you aren't accounting for the conference champs of the ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big East, Big 10, Pac 10, MVC, CUSA, and WCC at the very least. Why is the NIT champ better than ALL automatic bids again (including the champ of their own conference)? 3/30/2007 9:22:57 AM |

I'm a WVU fan as well, they are good but they def arent the best. They are however better than NCSU day in and day out. I watched the WVU vs. UConn game in person, and must say they are an exciting team to watch. John Beilein is a great coach, and thats why state wanted him so badly... WVU is a top 25 team and should have made it into the NCAA tourney. They had some quality wins, and I've heard from many they should have been in the tourney. WVU and Syracuse both got snubbed this year.
I'm from Morgantown so im biased, but not as bad as most of the fair weather or bandwagon state fans. I'm a Mountaineer fan, and a Wolfpack Support.
Its sad but WVU athletics > NCSU athletics 3/30/2007 9:31:59 AM |

I am accounting for all the division champions.
If you factored in those 5 wins into their RPI I'm pretty sure they'd be ranked somewhere in the 30's overall.
These were POSTSEASON wins so they should be weighed accordingly.
They clearly aren't better than Virginia was this year. I'd certainly say they're CLOSE to the level of a team like Duke. Most people would agree they are better than a handful of the at-large teams like Gonzaga, Arkansas, and Georgia Tech. They are easily better than the Belmont, North Texas, and FAMU so to say they are 66th is just inaccurate.
I'm not going to sit here and argue EXACTLY where they should be ranked because ultimately it really doesn't matter. There's no need to discredit an NIT championship though, particularly when NC State was going crazy because we beat Marist two weeks ago. It is what it is, an accomplishment that's neither great nor embarrassing. 3/30/2007 10:06:27 AM |
