when we send aid do we take into consideration the standard of living people used to have before the disaster cause it would be funny if the aid brought them shelter and food that was better than what they used to have but i will pray for them, this sounds pretty bad 1/13/2010 2:37:28 AM |

the place i always stay in haiti has collapsed but everyone is accounted for. i'm still waiting for word of some friends who are outside of pap closer to the epicenter. they are in a more rural area though so i am hoping that means they are ok.
this has the potential to have more deaths than the flooding and hurricanes, it is really a terrible situation.

I don't think it would cost much money to make a large impact for Haiti, especially given how close they are to the United States. I'm curious though as to how long it will take assets like USN hospital ships to make it out there. 1/13/2010 10:34:58 AM |

Haiti earthquake deaths may reach 500,000 A desperate hunt for survivors is under way as fears grow that the powerful earthquake which struck Haiti may have left left up to 500,000 people dead. 13th January, 2010
The presidential palace in Port-au-Prince lies in ruins after the earthquake. It was built in 1918 after two other palaces on the same site were destroyed.

Evangelical broadcaster Pat Robertson says Haiti has been "cursed" because of what he called a "pact with the devil" in its history.
The Associated Press VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. —
Evangelical broadcaster Pat Robertson says Haiti has been "cursed" because of what he called a "pact with the devil" in its history.
His spokesman said the Wednesday comments were based on Voodoo rituals carried out before a slave rebellion against French colonists in 1791.
Spokesman Chris Roslan says Robertson never stated that Tuesday's earthquake was God's wrath. He says Robertson's Operation Blessing group is sending millions of dollars in medication and relief workers to the country.
Robertson has angered opponents many times before with comments on current events and criticism of other faiths.
He once said American agents should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine retribution for withdrawing from the Gaza Strip." |

Hooksaw, just shut up. This is hardly a first for Pat Robertson, nor is it particularly surprising coming from a "christian right" spokesman. I also suspect it won't be the only asinine comment about this earthquake from one religious nut or another.
When Farrakhan makes a stupid as fuck comment I'm sure you'll be the first to draw it to our attention. Until then how about if we keep it on topic for the time being. 1/13/2010 7:04:17 PM |

It's almost like you ignored the quotation marks around christian right. No, Pat Robertson is not the spokesman for the Christian right. Unfortunately, his voice often either mirrors his followers or shapes their beliefs, much like say... Osama Bin Laden, or Louis Farrakhan. Doesn't make them spokesmen for the entire religion, but given the fact that they have a strong following it probably is safe to say that they speak for a portion of their group.
Robertson is a god damned nutcase, but so are a lot of the people who listen to him and send him money. 1/13/2010 7:13:48 PM |

CNN interview with the Haitian President is just mind-boggling - in addition to the palace being destroyed, his home is also destroyed, so he was at the airport, the airport told him it was not safe, and so the President basically didn't know where he was going to go.

Sounds to me like New Orleans/Lousiana's and Haiti's problems, respectively.
One could argue the case for us assisting at a federal level (in either case), but we sure as hell aren't obligated to.

as with most huge disasters in poor areas without much capacity for coordinating things like this, they say that the best thing for the next week or so would be just to give money. clinton was already an envoy for haiti, and has set up a site on the clinton foundation website where you can give directly to the relevant agencies in haiti:
http://www.clintonfoundation.org/haitiearthquake/

That was just a false rumor.
I don't know of many organizations that take civilian volunteers into disaster relief this early on. Will probably be looking at at least a week or so before major volunteer organizations are ready to support large amounts of volunteers.
I'd think the only way in right now would be through the Dominican by car.

I have a plane ticket credit to burn, I've floated the idea of going down there to help if I knew where/how to get involved rather than just showing up.
I still haven't heard anything about my family either. They go back and forth from the US/Haiti, so its hard to know when they're there or not.

1) This is awful beyond words, and I confess to spending much of today trying to avoid thinking about it.
2) Please contribute something. The Red Cross website will take anything $10 and up.
3) I worry that Haiti suffers from the same problem as Africa does in terms of getting aid. Not even racially speaking, but in terms of the fact that Haiti has endured so many disasters that it's easy to become desensitized to it. Based on the fact that when I enter "red cross" into google it immediately comes up with "red cross haiti," maybe I'm wrong.
4) I'm not going to encourage anybody to hang Pat Robertson. If someone did hang Pat Robertson, I'm not saying I'd contribute to that person's defense fund. But I'm not saying I wouldn't, either. 1/14/2010 12:36:32 AM |

From the news reports I'm reading, it sounds like the Haitian government has effectively lost control of the disaster stricken site, and the United Nations is unable to take control of the situation due to the blow to its command structure in the nation. The United States is becoming the defacto administrator, and from what I gather should have 800 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne there by tomorrow which will grow to around 3,500 boots plus the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and its 2,200 soldiers by Monday. We've also got a carrier battle group in place and a hospital ship enroute. It's good to see that our government has moved in quickly to hopefully restore order so that aid can be distributed.
