easier to recruit at Wake. recruits have actually heard of their best player, Duncan

our recruits were -20 years old when our best player was a household name

I think Chris Paul is a bigger draw nowadays than Duncan, but they're both huge.

Plus Wake has a pretty campus, a surprisingly passionate fanbase (at least in bball) and offers a really great student-to-teacher ratio. Believe it or not, a lot of recruits say that's a big deal to them.

If I'm Ron Wellman, I'm calling Brad Stevens pronto

^^^^, ^^, ^ I still say it's a push. Their name recognition isn't that much better than ours. When you factor in size of the fanbase along with facilities, resources, and history, I don't think it's any better of a gig; however, I'll bet money that the media doesn't constantly bring up how Wake fired a coach who took them to the 2nd round after only 3 years (1 round short of where Herb was able to take us in 10) in the way that they bring up how we "fired" Herb.

As for which is better, I doubt Wake can pay like State can.

^ Do you really think fans of the NBA give a rat's ass about where someone went to school?...I mean how many people do you see being like "Oh yeah, Marquette is my team" just because Dwayne Wade went there.

Duncan is too old to be a factor because you really have to be an ACC fan to remember where he went to school. Howard is meh. You could maybe make a case for Chris Paul, but he didn't REALLY blow up until he got to the league.

I'm talking about name recognition of the school and it's brand. I don't go to airports in Chicago and see people decked out in Wake Forest Gear. I can't say the same about Carolina, Duke, etc.

I think you're just pissed because I said something that wasn't flattering to Herb.

State and Wake are on the same plane as far as name recognition

In college basketball, there's UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA and then everyone else

Anyone repping Wolfpack or Deacon gear outside of NC is probably an alum or kin to an alum of that school

yes

Duncan is a first-ballot Hall of Famer. if you go into a recruit's house and say "who would you rather be? tim duncan or tommy burleson?" the recruit laughs.

Quote :
"Howard is meh."

Howard was always the 2nd or 3rd option for the Mavs, yet he scored 18+ per game for three straight years. he's well-known to NBA fans (i.e. recruits, because that's what this whole discussion is about)

Quote :

again, we're talking name recognition. recruits recognize (and idolize) the name Chris Paul. you could name our top-10 point guards of all time to a 16 year old recruit and not a single one would recognize any of the names

You just made my argument for me. Chris Paul and Wake Forest aren't synonyms. As Slave restated, as far as "name recognition" in recruiting goes, recruits are worried about which schools get the most media coverage/exposure. Wake Forest is not one of those schools as much as you are trying to make them out to be. Unless Chris Paul gets a big "WF" tatooed to his forehead, he isn't going to help Wake Forest's name recognition all that much.

all i'm saying is that coaches sell their best players to the recruits. WF coach can say "how would you like to see your name in the rafters alongside Tim Duncan, Chris Paul and Josh Howard"

Sid gets to say "hey, have you ever heard of David Thompson, Tommy Burleson or Dereck Whittenburg?"

that's all.

but instead you guys make it sound like Wake is a basketball powerhouse

16 year olds only care about money and fame.

if I were a coach, going head-to-head with Sid for a recruit, I'd pull this line to the recruit:

If you come to Wake Forest, I can guarantee you a great chance at making the NBA and making the kind of money Chris Paul and Tim Duncan make. Did you know that Tim makes $22.2 million per year and Chris makes $13.5 million per year? You know how much Sid's guys get once they're in the NBA? JJ Hickson makes $1.5 million and Josh Powell makes $0.96 million. Now that you know these figures, what more do I need to do to get you to give me a verbal?"

Which proves its not all about the age of relevant alumni, although I'm sure a few high school kids have seen Lebron throw an alleyoop to Hickson, or seen Powell get a rebound...say what you want about our players in the NBA...they're at least on teams that people like to watch

But if you think Wake has more appeal than State, you're crazy

Wake advantages:

- More recognizable recent alums, like Duncan and Paul
- ....

State advantages:

- 1 of 14 schools in history with multiple national titles
- A coach who has NBA connections
- A coach who literally knows what it takes to win a national title, at least in some context (as a player)
- Better facilities
- Bigger basketball budget
etc

OH I FORGOT TO MENTION

WAKE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A FUCKING HEAD COACH

Hey you ever heard the NBA on NBC theme song? Come to State!

^you're really playing yourself if you don't think any athlete has a lot of respect for a coach who has literally been through the same things that they have as a college athlete

Thats like saying NFL players dont give a shit that Jerry Richardson played in the league, and they have just as much respect for some oil tycoon who happens to buy a team

By your logic ncstatetke, State football should be raking in star defensive-lineman recruits. I mean, who doesn't want to be the next Mario Williams, and in so doing, play for NC State?...
