What are some good watches for men? Looking for quality and style ... something classic in titanium or steel. Willing to spend up to 2k, but definitely want value/quality over flash.

What are good brands? Also, what should I look for when buying a watch? I rely on my phone for the time of day ... I have no idea what to look for when shopping for a men's watch.

oh and reed's is having a sale including watches this weekend.

If you go to the one in Cary mall - talk to Anthony - tell him Derek sent you and provide the code words 'wrestling sucks'. He'll take good care of you.

I live in Orlando, so will have to find a good store around here. We have tons of malls and outlets though, so should be able to find something decent.

I love David Yurman watches, but they're just a little bit pricier than what I want to spend here, and I'm not sure that they're really worth the price tag.

In my experience, a watch is a very personal item, and is often best selected by the wearer. At the very least, significant guidance is probably best. If it's a surprise, then I would try and make comments about some of the types of watches you see in certain magazines or whatever and see what the response is...kind of the inverse of a man shopping for a ring.

I had a girl buy me a watch one time that really wasn't the right style, and even though the intention was great, I wasn't tremendously fond of the styling. Fortunately she was comfortable enough that she wasn't offended when I mentioned it would be best to exchange it for a different model, and I am very happy with the choice.

Oooh. I like the Invicta, Bobby. Only in silver, not gold.

^^^ His bday is a week after Christmas, so he's getting a couple of nice things. The second gift will be a little more exciting. Like Vegas, but a bit more extreme.

^ We live together, so I know his style pretty well. That said, I'll be very careful about the return policy. We've had a lot of discussions regarding ring styles and overall jewelry styles, so I have an idea of what he likes for jewelry.

Chronoshark is another one of those daily watch deal sites - but I don't recall ever seeing something as high of quality as what you're looking for (though they still have good quality watches - just not $2k quality)

do you think he's more of a form over function kind of guy? will he be wearing this watch when playing tennis or doing other impact activities, or will this watch be worn mainly for formal events and business casual dress?

I have a Citizen Skyhawk AT Titanium watch that I've been happy with. It has a lot of functionality that is great for a person that travels a lot or does business in other time zones, and having a perpetual calendar is something I've been spoiled by. The watch is kind of bulky though, and the watch would probably have a thinner profile and be more comfortable if some of the additional functionality of the watch were removed.

Form over function. He won't wear a watch on the court. This would be more for business/formal occasions.

I would never buy an Invicta regardless of whether it was $10 or $10,000. They're probably not bad for $80 or whatever, but the fact that they put some bullshit $900 MSRP on them makes them deserve to go out of business for their shady tactics.

$2k is a tough number. There are plenty of good quartz watches from brands like Victorinox in the $400-$800 range that are top notch in terms of materials and build quality. There are plenty of lower end watches from higher end brands such as Tag and Breitling that come in around the $2k mark, but I really don't know that they're worth it. I own a Breitling Colt Chronograph and it is very nice in every way. My Victorinox Dive Master 500 seems perfect in fit and finish, the saphire crystal is flawless, and the design is great too though. I really can't say that the 3x more expensive Breitling is better in any way. Go into the $5k range and things change far more dramatically.

^^ Yeah, I really like Lum-tec and want to own one at some point. You can find lightly used ones pretty cheap on occasion too since they don't have a huge following. I assumed she didn't really want a tactical look though.

I have this tag formula one (quartz movement)
its a little less formal so its good for me as a builder to wear every day. It listed at like $1100

I just saw a new formula 1 at baileys the other day that was more formal and pretty sharp looking that was $1400. I think it was this one http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=tag+heuer+formula+1&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=imvnsr&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1290&bih=609&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=2105882992167744911&sa=X&ei=PVrEToacOcSCtgfDh-nhDQ&ved=0CJEBEPMCMAs#ps-sellers

I got 20% off of mine at baileys just by asking what they could do on price.

Maybe I just don't get it, what makes a watch "$2k quality"

Is it one of those things where if you have so much money then you might as well spend it on something?

$2k is not a CRAZY amount to spend on a watch, particularly if you're a professional. Sure, you can buy a $60 watch that will do the job for a couple of years.

But if you want a classic timepiece that will last forever, then it's probably worth it to spend the extra money.

Plus, I want to get this engraved. This is something that, ideally, will last forever.

$2k is an odd number for brand new watches. Increase it to $3k and there are many more options.

Yeah, he's shopping for that, apparently. He may have actually bought it over the weekend while I was in NC. We've been living together for about a year now, and frequently discuss marriage, wedding, pets, next house, kids, plans for the future ... etc.

And based on research, I think 3k may be a more reasonable price point, as mentioned above.

Even assuming that $2k isn't too much to spend on a watch, I still don't know what makes a watch "$2k quality"

What makes a certain watch worth $2-5 thousand dollar bucks besides the name on the front?

I mean I'm assuming it's not got diamonds and gold in it, so clearly the materials themselves aren't driving the price that high.

Extravagant is relative. It's wasteful if the other person won't appreciate the gift. But if the gift fits the person, then it's appropriate.

I wouldn't buy a 2k watch for myself. But for a special gift, I'd rather spend the extra money on something that the recipient will truly love.

Also, keep in mind, 2k was just a price mentioned. Not dead set on that number. But I'd prefer to stay under that. If there's a watch that's half that price, but better quality, I'd go for that. I'd also spend a little more for something that the recipient would LOVE.
