I feel like all the reboot films coming out is going out of control.

See message_topic.aspx?topic=641112 the last Fantastic 4 films are not even 10 years old. They did the same thing with Spider Man in 2012 rebooting a reboot from the early/mid 2000's that featured tobey maguire or the X-men First Class reboot (although this could arguably be called a prequel)
.
I can understand the point of reboots to bring new take on a movie and bring it forth to a new generation. See the Terminator reboot thread message_topic.aspx?topic=641114 or rebooting Star Trek. Is the idea and creativity pool in hollywood so dry that production companies are rebooting reboots of films that aren't even 10 years old? What is next are they going to reboot Iron Man next year?

Thoughts?

One reason - Money. As long as people keep paying and the studio is raking in profits, it won't ever stop.

There's low risk involved because the story has been proven to be successful, and the name is already well known so people will recognize it immediately.

While not true for all of them, rebooting is a great way to bring the franchise into a new generation, which is cheaper and more profitable than trying to create a new one.

Lucas explained it with Star Wars pretty well. He created a a trilogy in the 70's that appealed to that generation of kids. By updating the film and releasing new movies in the franchise every decade or so, he captures a new generation of kids every 10 years and is able to continue to build equity in the brand.

Plus, a lot of the "reboots" are based around a franchise where the movie is merely a part of the value. Spiderman, Batman, Superman, X-men, etc. all are part of the larger franchise that sells comics, TV Shows, action figures, lego sets, etc.
While the movies are probably big profit centers for them, they're more interested in reigniting interest in the brand. That's why every 3 year old in the US knows who Batman and Spiderman are, but have no clue who Dick Tracey is.

Robocop, and ones like Total Recall are the movies that seem like true reboots. There is very little value in the franchise, and there's been no interest in keeping it fresh, then all of a sudden there's millions of dollars thrown at this brand to reignite it.
All I can think is that there's a bunch of lazy studio execs who figured it would be x% cheaper to take something with a tiny bit of value and reignite interest in it than to take something fresh and try to create a new franchise.

As far as comic book movies go, I don't care how long it's been since the first ones came out, if they were shitty I'm happy for them to reboot them as soon as possible and give me the movie I want to see. The first 2 fantastic 4 were fucking atrocious, I'm looking forward to the new one. Spider-man is a character I want to see more movies of, and so I have no problem with that reboot either. I enjoyed the new Spider-Man movie just as much as the best movie (2nd one) from the original trilogy, and much more than 1 or 3.

As for other reboots- robocop, total recall, etc, those i do not care for, most likely because they have never been better than the original, and could in most cases have been a completely different (albeit still shitty) movie but they just want to cash in on the name recognition of the original

Yeah they latest one was so stupid and made no sense. The Khan dude teleports from Earth to Klingon a distance over several 100 light years i'm sure. Both the Enterprise and the Starfleet battleship can travel to Klingon in a matter of minutes, yet the enterprise was the only ship around to make the flight AND no Klingon ships were close enough to intercept either.

By the way in the future the gravity of the earth must be the equivalent of a black hole as the planet sucked in both ships after that battle in a matter of seconds after they duked it out around the moon.
