At a price tag of $80 per month, the service offers speeds around 10 times greater than that of the average Internet connection. Google has been gradually rolling out its Fiber network to select cities, but only in neighborhoods that express interest in the service. Once a neighborhood has opted into the program, Google typically takes about a year to build the necessary infrastructure before people can tap into it." |

also $120/month for internet+tv or $FREE per month for 5mbps/1mbps
I don't need a $70-$80 Gigabit service but I'm hoping that it causes TWC to lower their plan costs. 1/27/2015 12:25:55 PM |

yeah, I don't need a GB but if I can pay less than I am now for my 30Mb/s and TV you damn well better believe I will.
All things considered even if it cost more I might be tempted just so I can not give money to TWC. 1/27/2015 12:44:34 PM |

we spend about $45/month for 20/2 but were about to up that to 30/5 for about $55. I'm not sure if $15-$25 extra is worth it just to say fuck you to TWC
i'm curious about how the customer service is in areas it's already deployed. I know for their consumer products Google has never had the greatest customer service (although in this case the bar set by TWC/Comcast is much much lower than in other markets) 1/27/2015 12:54:05 PM |

Sad that I found out about this through a SlickDeals deal alert rather than from the email list I signed up for with Google. Hopefully not a sign of customer service to come.

Strictly speaking for internet this is true, but I think the TV bundle would work out better for many people who want both. That said I know I'm not getting as good a deal as some people because for whatever reason TWC refuses to negotiate with me like they do with some. Every time I try to negotiate or mention about cancelling or switching they are just ready to let me go .1/27/2015 2:35:16 PM |

For 30x/200x the speed? Plus, I have to figure YouTube would never buffer again, which even on 30/5 with TWC, happens a fair bit on 1080p.
You could also go in on it with a neighbor. Plenty of extra bandwidth.1/27/2015 2:51:48 PM |

But seriously I can completely get with this argument for households that are internet only. My 30 Mbps connection is sufficient for my girlfriend and I easily on the downstream.
But since my TV subscription is way more expensive than my internet (even just the meager 1 DVR, 1 cable Box, lowest package that still has ESPNU/FoxSports), the internet upgrade here is just gratis to the TV options.
I wouldn't even bitch at TWC so much if they didn't have the nerve to bill for features that cost them next to nothing and I can't actually avoid paying for ("The Guide" channel program menu, DVR "Service" on top of the box rental).

Two questions:
1. Do you use any cloud services or ever have to upload large amounts of data? I'm not that concerned with download, although it will be nice for PS4/XBO updates to take closer to 1 min instead of 25 min. Upload on TWC/U-verse sucks ass. We went on an extended vacation and had tons of RAW files to upload to cloud backup. It took weeks. A lot of things become possible when you have more than what you know what to do with now.
2. Do you have any 4K TVs or see yourself ever buying one? According to Netflix, their 4k streams will require at least a 50 Mbps connection to be safe. So if multiple people are streaming 4k in a house, plus other things going on, you'd need more bandwidth.
Another application--telecommuting. I'd imagine we'd see a lot more jobs allowing remote work when you can stream 4k from your house. Two of my previous jobs have wanted to implement that, but been unable to because of shitty local connections.1/28/2015 2:23:49 AM |

Also if you have a PS4, your streaming experience when streaming PS3 games will benefit from higher bandwidth.
When Oculus and HoloLens are out, i'm sure doing a real-time VR teleconference will want more bandwidth. If you use iCloud or CloudDrive, or want to do any online backup services, having as much bandwidth as possible makes this work a lot better. 1/28/2015 4:22:06 AM |

i'm back down to ~$80 after taxes/fees for "standard" (10/1?) intarwebs, HD cable box, and basic HD cable (whatever package includes stations like ESPNU)...you said you have a DVR too, though, so maybe that's where it's higher
i just played the "i'm gonna leave you for u-verse if you don't stop charging me up the ass" game with them and the guy got so far as to say he was processing my cancellation...and then, magically, his supervisor walked in the room and he asked me to hold on...he came back to say his supervisor was in a good mood and was able to do more than he could and asked if i'd stay for the price/package above
i'm not actually sold on $80 for just internet (no matter how fast it is) because i don't do much (i stream netflix and the like, but i don't upload much)...i don't find my internet especially slow
$120 for internet and TV is great for some people, but that's 50% more than i'm paying now and i don't think i'll get 50% more out of it
i might get the $free 5/1 and try cutting the cord (again)...but honestly, i don't particularly hate TWC and i'm hoping the threat of genuinely leaving (and them knowing that google is real competition) will cause them to cut their prices by 25% or more and i'll just stick with them

^^Yeah the whole DVR thing is a ripoff ($10 device rental, $15 "service" ) that I'd just assume drop but I'm keeping the girlfriend happy .
Thought about getting a Tivo but wouldn't likely save me money since I'd still have to rent a cable card and pay for their service making it a wash. I also considered building a DVR box and getting a cable card tuner but I'd still end up spending a decent amount on that.
Problem is a fundamentally like cable tech over the alternatives. I don't have a lot of faith in satellite tv and while Uverse is fine and dandy, I'm not big about the web/TV bandwidth being shared and the limitations that having that shared connection can impose and when I spec'ed out a similar config to what I have now it wouldn't really save me too much.
Once the Sling TV gets a little bit more mature and a few more channels I'll probably consider jumping over to that for my TV since most of what I care about is sports. 1/28/2015 2:37:02 PM |

Does anyone else here actually anticipate what future bandwidth needs will be or is this everyone's argument? Drives me insane. Same shit happened when carriers started taking away unlimited data and people were like "I don't care, I don't use much." Then they started buying the newer phones and started choking down data left and right.1/28/2015 2:44:47 PM |

The real question is where they are starting, because that will determine how long it makes it to your general locale.
My guess is that they will start out in the RTP area and branch out since a lot of major telecom lines run up and down the coast along the 85/95 corridor so big lines run down from DC through RTP to Charlotte and Atlanta.
If that is the case it could actually take some time to get into Raleigh proper and the western suburbs could get connected quicker.1/28/2015 4:13:29 PM |
