In short: - Raleigh wants to tear down City Hall, build new government campus - City Council members say they don’t want to renovate the City Hall, vacant police station and parking deck on the downtown block bounded by Morgan, McDowell, Hargett and Dawson streets. Instead, they want to demolish them and start over on the site. - City staff estimated last year that the project could cost more than $90 million.
Fuck that spensive shit, Clint

it's going to have to be replaced at some point
better to do it now while the city has assets to sell in order to offset more than half of the $90 million it'll cost
that cost will only go up the longer they wait

^^ article says the building only has another 15 years in it. but it was built in 1983, so that's kinda confusing to me. 6/22/2017 5:04:51 PM |

buildings have a design lifespan, and then a lifespan you use when you are forecasting and planning facilities and capital projects.
^^ 30 years is when you start getting into really major overhauls, 15 more years sounds realistic for needing a major renovation
i haven't looked at these projects or whats planned so i have no idea if its true in this case, but its entirely possible that a complete demo and new better planned structure is more cost effective in the long run. also aesthetics do have value when you are trying to revitalize a city and encourage other development. 6/22/2017 5:19:11 PM |

almost all of the condo development is low, lumber construction with bland styling, it is bad long term for the city. high rise condos would be great, we have very little of that though.7/6/2017 10:15:23 AM |

I support this as long as they allocate some money for homeless services/shelters, so there's not homeless people walking around everywhere shitting and pissing in any nook or cranny they find. 7/6/2017 11:45:54 AM |

Mary-Ann Baldwin continues to be the absolute worst
Quote : | "Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said there will be no Christmas parade in 2023 in the city.
"The decision was made out of an abundance of caution for parade participants and spectators, as well as respect for Hailey Brooks’ family and friends," the city wrote in announcing the change." |
Quote : | "On Thursday, the Brooks' attorney Jason Miller of Raleigh-based Miller Monroe and Plyler released a statement about the city's decision.
The Brooks family is disappointed that the City of Raleigh chose to cancel its 2023 Raleigh Christmas Parade rather than adopt basic safety measures to protect the community," Miller wrote. "The City did not reach out to the family before making this decision. "If consulted, the Brooks family would have urged the City to proceed with the Parade after implementing basic, common-sense safety protocols that should have been in place in 2022, such as those proposed in the Shine Like Hailey Parade Safety Act. It has been 10 months since Hailey Brooks was killed, and it is time for the City to honor her by enacting protections for the safety of this community – not by canceling the parade." |

an absolute pursuit of safety or rather in this case, the illusion of so, is fruitless
what we can't quantify are the mental effects of this kind of a mentality on people 9/14/2023 5:10:31 PM |

My guess is that they've just been looking for an excuse to get rid of the Christmas Parade in general and replace it with another "closed streets arts/drinking festival" with a winter/holiday theme. There's probably way more money in the latter. They could easily still host the marching bands on stage or in parts of the street without walking around if they were so inclined.
Who knows. I'm not a Christian, so I really dgaf about this parade if it's supposed to mean anything other than "community." 9/15/2023 3:21:43 PM |
