Not that i really expect anything to come from this. But at least they are being called out for not being able to have it both ways.

I find it hard to believe that SACS would actually do anything of consequence to a large public university. Something like revoking their accreditation would end up a legal nightmare. 11/10/2017 10:11:10 AM |

Yep either you are a sham school or a sham sports program.. in reality its actually both but they have to pick one to get punished for. I suggest people continue to make formal complaints to SACS to keep the pressure on. 11/10/2017 10:12:17 AM |

If those students wanted to receive a grade in the classes, they would have to take an additional exam or provide proof of their work to show that they’d learned the material. Otherwise, they’d just have to take another course altogether to make up the credit hours. This was enough to get the accreditor to back off, though they said that they’d keep UNC on “special monitoring.”" |
Not entirely true. At first, Chapel Hill wanted to give everyone in said classes a pass, and SACS refused to even consider that. The arrangement agreed here was what Chapel Hill then proposed that made SACS happy.11/10/2017 10:52:56 AM |

I don't either, but I have little time for castrated bureaucrats or regulators. If they'll never do anything to people that matter, they should be disbanded.
Quote : | "Tom Fetzer, a member of the UNC system’s Board of Governors and a former Raleigh mayor, said he didn’t believe UNC’s position on the classes to the NCAA. He said the university’s characterization of the classes to the NCAA appears to be a “clear violation” of the university’s agreement with the accreditor, commonly referred to as SACS.
“I am nonplussed that SACS has not queried UNC about complying with their earlier agreements, especially in light of the NCAA opinion,” said Fetzer, a lobbyist appointed to the board this year." |
Quote : | "“My reading of it all along is that they simply decided to lie,” said Jay Smith, a UNC history professor, of his employer. “They lied in the face of the NCAA and dared them to do anything about it.”" |

I am about as ABC as they come, but I would really hate to see SACS severely discipline the University. I was all on board the NCAA giving them the death penalty, but the ramifications of UNC-CH losing their accreditation obviously goes far beyond sports. This is going to affect even our own Alumni.
With that said, nothing is going to happen and this thread should be locked. 11/10/2017 12:18:37 PM |

Eh, we immediately become the goto public university in the state if they lost the accreditation so I say good for us, but its a moot point because it will never ever ever ever ever ever ever happen.
At most they get put on probation for another year or two which has no real practical cost. Sadly there isn't any level of true punishment they can apply between probation and revocation and that is the biggest problem.11/10/2017 2:51:20 PM |

UNC Chapel Hill losing their accreditation would not be a good thing for NC State as a university. It won't happen, because they're basically too big to fail, but it's not something anyone should want to happen. 11/10/2017 3:05:29 PM |

A major public university perpetrated long-term systemic academic fraud.
If that's not an action for an accreditor to act on, the entire concept of accreditation is meaningless. If you think that, fine, or think Carolina is too big that they can't act on it, which they likely won't, fine. Accreditation serves no purpose then. It's only the underpinning upon which all federal aid is distributed in this country.
I don't care for it too much because as I tell people "the Department of Education does not educate anyone", but this to me is a clear example of something that should move up the food chain to it. It's too big for the NCAA and too big for SACS, and state government aren't going to do anything harmful.

You can't make this shit up.
UNC to SACS: We committed fraud.
NCAA committee to UNC: So, you're saying you committed fraud?
UNC to NCAA committee: Uh, did we say fraud?...that was a typographical error on our part...nay, not even an error as we don't make those at UNC...let's call it an oversight. The person who committed that oversight has since been fired. We good?
NCAA committee to UNC: Well, if you say you didn't commit fraud, I guess we're good. Still, we'll forward along a transcript of your testimony to SACS and let them determine if anything sounds fishy.
SACS reads NCAA transcript: Huh, so UNC said they didn't commit fraud afterall...so they lied to us about lying to us?...Dah well, they obviously haven't lied to us about anything since the last time they lied to us. Guess it's time to put this to bed.

If I'm SACS, I make unc double down on their "these classes are fraud" stance and make unc show it isn't counting the classes towards degrees.
When the paperwork comes out that shows those classes are no longer valid for degree audits, which will take slogging through a bunch of FOIA requests, the NCAA subpoenas that information and then uses it to hammer them to the wall. 11/22/2017 3:31:11 PM |

I don't know what she said, but she was already kind of scapegoated by the school to protect MBB and FB with the AFAM stuff, so who knows what's been building up the last 30+ years she's been there.
The failure to properly deal with injuries is very troubling though. But who knows how much if that is her versus the medical staff.

old ladies say "hang out to to dry" all the time. i find it much more believable that she said that rather than "they're gonna hang you from a tree with nooses". come on. if she were stupid and racist enough to say shit like that, she would've been saying it for years now.
also, the idea that she requested the team to do a war chant in honor of a native american coach, rather than "let's mock this stupid chant FSU does", is also laughable. 4/5/2019 10:17:39 AM |

Also, all those secondhand accounts are from anonymous parents. If those parents were actually concerned about racism, there'd be no anonymity.
The medical stuff is also kinda dubious. From reading the Washington Post piece on this, it seems like all the fault would be on the team doctor who was not putting the kids best interests first. Hatchell definitely comes off as kind of a mean old lady. If that doctor is scared of telling the coach a player isn't healthy enough to play, that's a problem with the athletic department, not the coach.
I'm still convinced this is just UNC trying to push her out because she isn't winning like she used to and they would catch hell for firing a Hall of Fame coach without cause. 4/5/2019 12:45:27 PM |
