You'll never convince me that Dean Smith, arguably the second or third most powerful man in the state of North Carolina in the early 90's (Jim Hunt and Jesse Helms being the others) who self professed to being like a father to his players was just so blissfully ignorant and unaware of what was going on.

I think Valvano and K lit a fire under him and that even if he didn't start the scheme he let it go.

Also, this notion of Dean single-handedly integrating the ACC drives me crazy too since Billy Jones played basketball at Maryland in 1965 a couple years before Charlie Scott, not to mention Irwin Holmes was the fucking captain of our tennis team in the 50's.
