joint income short term: 0-$19k no change $19k-$77k drops from 15% to 12% $77k-$165k drops from 25% to 11% $165k-$315k drops from 28% to 24% $315k-$400k drops from 33% to 32% $400k-$600k changes bracket so goes from 33%-35% and new is 35% $600k+ drops from 39.6% to 37%
in the short term it benefits the middle class, in the long term it hurts the poor and middle class and helps the top percentiles 2/13/2018 10:08:11 AM |

Unless you dont understand what you just posted, the tax cuts benefit the poor as well, not just the middle class (those making under $19k are already paying little to no taxes). So we agree that the tax cuts are beneficial to everyone, and not just the rich.
When you say the long term, I assume you mean after the tax cuts are scheduled to expire. Again, let me know when the first democrat proposes a bill to keep the tax cuts permanent. 2/13/2018 10:34:22 AM |

it's still 10% under $19k joint income, if you are including things that effectively bring that down I'm not sure why you aren't doing the same to the other brackets (actually I know the answer)

see: H.R.8 - American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 https://www.congress.gov/bill/112th-congress/house-bill/8/text signed into law by president obama, more republicans voted against it in the senate than democrats, more republicans voted against it in the house than democrats
(i don't really have much of a problem with the rates in the tax cut, just making things clear)

FBI Director basically confirmed the WH lied bigly about this Porter situation. How are we ever supposed to take anything the WH says seriously and why would anyone ever believe them?
Also, given how important information security was in the 2016 presidential election I’m sure the MAGAs are really upset about the lack of clearances for viewing classified information in this WH. 2/13/2018 11:01:10 AM |

So you are either factually wrong or disingenuous about the vote. But we can look past that, because we all agree that the tax cuts are a good thing. So when the first democrat proposes a bill to make the tax cuts permanent, let me know.2/13/2018 12:10:21 PM |

Since you quoted me originally, I want to say that you are correct about the Dems also being garbage. But:
1. Tax cuts for the lower & middle class are good 2. The expiration date is not 3. Large cuts to social programs are not
So I'd love to say that this is a good thing but the cuts to Medicare & Medicaid (and whatever else idk) make it a bad thing. 2/13/2018 12:19:46 PM |

Quote : | "2. The expiration date is not" | Agreed. The expiration date is just political posturing for 2024 election cycle. I would love to see bipartisan support for a bill to make the cuts permanent though.

-We don't have enough money for the programs that I believe we need. -Lower and middle class wages have stagnated for 25 years or so. They needed relief. The rich, in the same time period, have amassed enormous wealth at an accelerating rate. -And if you want my actual opinion, income should be taxed at an extremely high rate over a certain amount. No reason for some people to be absurdly wealthy on the backs of the proletariat.

Trimming/re-directing waste is good, but Medicare and medicaid are vital pieces of the social safety net. Policing the rest of the world is not. And I think we should be spending much more on social programs, via taxes on the rich.

Random Person: 1 + 1 is 2.
Trump: 1 + 1 is 3. It also equals 2. A lot of people say 3. Maybe Hillary Clinton says 2, I don't know. It's 2 or 3. Let's say 2 for now.

Because we have a mixture of public/private care and politicians who are incentivized to funnel money to into the private end. Single payer can fix this.

Did people not know who Trump was? They actually thought he would “drain the swamp” and not just have his entire administration be one huge grift?

Here's my favorite thing right now:
Lloyd Blankfein - These tax cuts combined with increased spending could really hurt the economy. But the economy right now is higher than it would have been under Clinton.
What a corrupt piece of shit.
Paul Ryan (regarding Porter and beating women) - The vetting process needs to be fixed.
No, actually, the vetting process worked. The FBI froze the clearance process and alerted the hiring officials to the problems. The part that needs to be fixed is the process that puts people like Paul Ryan and Donald Trump in office. That process would be the education system combined with campaign finance laws.
What a complete moron.

I'm not sure what I would put it at. I just think no one should be making 100x+ what the lower class makes. The fact that we have a "lower class" at all is a problem. We can get into a debate about capitalism in general but I don't really want to do that 2/14/2018 12:47:00 PM |

Ahh I see. That number is household income. The reason it has gone up is because of the increase in dual earners:
http://www.pewresearch.org/ft_dual-income-households-1960-2012-2/
So even taking this into account, the middle class & and lower class have not kept up. When you limit it to individual income, we're waaaaaaay off.
Also that chart cuts off at 2009 (the highest point in recent history). We've gone back down since then.
