Apparently it is cheaper to send whole chickens to China for processing rather than to process them here. So, I doubt there is any real savings by "buying local"

I'm talking about environmental savings but the shipping isn't cheap anyway, its just subsidized and being paid for in a different way. Take this article for example

[Edited on March 2, 2018 at 10:49 AM. Reason : cost you pay for shipping =/= cost of shipping]

I cannot believe that this is something that can be imposed by an executive order. But I guess since tariffs used to be the in-thing in the early days of our government, it wasn't seen as a big deal. Back then you probably couldn't even explain globalism.

No intelligent person would enact such a plan without thorough review of the economic consequences.

When I heard this news yesterday (or was it Wednesday?) someone probably needed to prop my chin back up.

I understand that there are still tariffs around on some goods, but still, this seems like such an archaic move.

Under national security pretenses it certainly can be done. Lawmakers can’t undo this if he goes through. I still think it becomes more targeted. Not even Trump is this stupid..

[Edited on March 2, 2018 at 3:06 PM. Reason : I’m generally against protectionism but targeted tariffs could help isolated industries]

This is such a terrible idea. Besides pissing off trading partners, you're penalizing the massive American automotive and aerospace industries to benefit the comparatively tiny American steel industry.

I foresee many more cars being made in Canada and Mexico.

Free trade prevents violence due to the increasing dependency on economies of other countries. Trade wars create unnecessary animosity and market volatility. It's bad for business.

But let's be clear. Every controversy from Trump is to distract from Russia and incompetence

Free trade IS violence. It allows for the exploitation of unfair labor, workplace safety, and environmental practices in developing countries while encouraging overconsumption and waste in the developed world. Until we stop externalizing these costs, people will continue to claim/believe that it is economically beneficial, but its not because the costs that have been externalized are far greater.

^I think there's some truth to this but primarily because not ALL countries participate in free trade. If all countries did, at some point over time (I have no clue how long) wages/costs/etc. would stabilize and equalize (to a large extent) across the board. So, eliminating free trade actually perpetuates the inequality.

Incentive systems and tax breaks and shit factor into this significantly too which is why a dramatic simplification of the tax code in general needs to happen as well. You can see this at play domestically.

So, as is argued by a lot of people who study geopolitics, we need to walk the walk here before we try and spread it globally otherwise it just continues to perpetuate our hypocrisy.

if they paid that is acceptance, it has all the parts of a contact

edit: lol, actually it wouldn't have capacity if he wasn't working for trump. so for trump to fight her lawsuit or go after her for breaking the NDA he would have to verify the contract which would probably open him up to campaign finance issues so he can't do it

^^ that's not how it works, that argument from stormy is nonsensical, is what i'm seeing on lawyer twitter.

BUt because this was a filing in court, the NDA document is now out in public, and supposedly there's some legal loophole that it doesn't break the NDA disclosure if it's incidental to a court filing.

So in a way, Stormy has already "won" this round, the NDA is public, timelines are established, pseudonyms have been revealed for Donald Trump, there's already plenty for the media to dig in to.

If team Trump try to fight this lawsuit in anyway at this point, it validates that Trump secretly tried to pay Stormy off and slow rolled the payment until just before the election, and the way they missed timelines on payment until the last minute seems to indicate Trump would surely have had direct knowledge of the payment.

It's complete how much lying and corruption Trump managed to get involved with during the election, it's a complete breakdown of our media that reporting on Trump's malfeasance throughout his business career didn't gain more traction, instead with outlets hyperfocusing on Hillary and emails.

there is an offer (the contract), consideration (each party is offering something), and acceptance (they paid). that's contract 101, what twitter lawyer is saying otherwise?

Even after reading articles from both sides and experts this morning I still like it. I don’t trust Trump to be prepared but nothing else we’ve tried has worked.

I do think KJU is willing to meet now because he is confident enough in his nuclear program to “freeze it.” That said, no way they are giving up their bombs or denuclearizing.

North Korea will brag about how they've come to the table and how they're trying to be a good country. Trump will get a diplomatic win which he'll use to endlessly brag about being better than Obama, Clinton, and every other leader anywhere, ever, of all time. The best.

And that's all that will happen because neither Trump nor his State Department will follow up and do the actual work of negotiating.

I am remaining cautiously optimistic to be fair to the people on here that I've criticized regarding suggestions for an approach to NK. While I don't think I'm wrong it's entirely possible I am and that somehow this yields movement.

I will withhold my commentary until afterwards.

North Korea has always tried to meet directly with American administrations. Historically these meetings have been rejected because the imagery of dear leader meeting with a President gets used by North Korea to prove they’re becoming a global power.

Trump meeting with North Korea is going to be about effective as Dennis Rodman meeting with North Korea.
