duck is usually more expensive than beef 9/17/2012 10:50:45 AM |

True, but the amount of duck on the plate did not justify the $17 price tag. It was six thin slices of duck. 9/17/2012 11:11:01 AM |

blasphemy. They got all of their beef fresh ground from the Fresh Market daily. For the price, they could not be beat. It did go down a little in quality when the son took over and was working most of the time, but when we frequented it from 2001-2005 it was the best burger you could get for the money. The hours were just like any other breakfast/lunch place. The owner had ties to a bunch of people in the athletic departments and he gave us tickets to games on several occasions. It is sad that a place like this had to close9/17/2012 12:13:19 PM |

I definitely came post 2005 - lower quality days. Not even in my top 10 burgers in raleigh, not even close. I think I had a decent short order breakfast there one day, but that was about the only moderately memorable meal. 9/17/2012 3:27:56 PM |

I've lived in Raleigh a total of 8+ years and I've never heard of The Burger Hut. If the place was that amazing I find it a little odd. 9/18/2012 3:19:30 PM |

Yeesh. I lived in Cameron Court for a couple years and often walked over to the ghetto mart for milk/beer/whatever. After 2 years, I still never figured out the hours that the Burger Hut was actually open. 9/19/2012 9:37:20 AM |

Quote : | "Joseph Szabo, the head of the Federal Railroad Administration, visited Raleigh's warehouse district this morning to announce an additional $23.7 million in federal funds that will complete the cost of a a $60 million replacement for Raleigh's outmoded, dinky Amtrak station.
It's not new money. There is $15.1 million that was part of $545 million in federal stimulus (ARRA) money for fast-train improvements, announced in 2010. The $15.1 million was a small part of that big package that was not designated in advance for a particular project. And another $6.7 million that had been marked for track improvements in that same original $545 million package.
This money is added to a $21 million federal grant -- which WAS new money -- that Raleigh and NCDOT won in June. Plus $466,000 announced today, to help with preliminary engineering costs.
So the feds are covering $43.3 million of the $60 million cost to build the first phase of Union Station in the former Dillon Supply Viaduct Building near the corner of West and Martin streets, just a block from the planned Citrix Systems headquarters office. Raleigh has pledged $6 million. Triangle Transit is pitching in the Viaduct building and land, worth $1.4 million.
And the state DOT has pledged to cover the remaining $9 million, something DOT officials forgot to mention when I spoke with them this week." |

Nice! The current Amtrak station is tiny, this will be a welcome improvement. It will also be a little more walkable from most of downtown, the fact that it's actually on the same side of the tracks as the rest of downtown being one reason. 9/21/2012 3:35:20 PM |

Increased train service between Charlotte and Raleigh is already on track as they are doing work to double track the line and make a lot of the crossings grade separated I think. 9/21/2012 5:10:12 PM |

If they increased the speed slightly between raleigh and charlotte and raleigh and dc it would make train travel a viable option as compared to flying. With parking/security/etc. a 4.5 hour trip to dc doesn's sound too bad. They need to get the trip to charlotte down to around 2 hours. (I think it takes about 3+ now) 9/22/2012 11:04:20 AM |

Speaking of that area, wasn't Kings/Neptunes going to open up some sort of restaurant on the ground floor. It used to be Martin Street Pizza, but I never heard anything but bad reviews. I thought I remember something about the owners trying to get some sort of variance to allow for a pick up/street service window. 9/25/2012 4:48:11 PM |

^^ They're probably just working on it as they have the capital rather than taking out a big loan to renovate everything. I would guess that the space wasn't up to code and they're having to overhaul the electrical, etc. 9/26/2012 9:24:10 AM |

Raleigh could have a decent train station by 2016, although I don't have any concept as to what $60 million gets you. I am sure a heavy portion of that will go to tracks/decking/infrastructure. 9/26/2012 10:00:21 AM |

Don't expect anything amazing, but it will be a massive improvement from the current embarrassment for sure. I would expect a larger and nicer waiting area, hopefully a convenience store of some sort and maybe a restaurant or cafe and level-boarding platforms. They are renovating the Dillon Supply Viaduct building rather than building from scratch. 9/26/2012 10:08:14 AM |

Not all downtown proper related but some interesting restaurant news:
CowFish (from Charlotte) is now heading to North Hills in the CapTrust building. The original rumor had them opening up in the old Nelson's/Foster's location, but the current rumor for that space has Harris Teeter acquiring and using it as additional storage or grocery space.
Also, BurgerFi is now open on Wake Forest Rd. behind the Trader Joes. I would be interested to hear if anyone has eaten at one, has a review. Menu looks good.
Also looks like Nails (sp?) from Hibernian is opening up a pub in Oakwood/Person St. area, and another location of Hibernian out by 540 in NoRal. 9/28/2012 11:06:49 AM |
