ah, i actually hadn't heard that term yet --
what i meant was kinda the crispness and flatness of a lot of my shots, but i think it has to do with a fair amount of them i post in here being from larger lens lengths (200mm in some cases)...
but when you say wide open, do you mean very low f-stops?
-ZiP!- 5/22/2006 1:11:49 AM |
Ronny All American 30652 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, I usually shoot at 2.8. Bokeh is the smoothing/blurring of the background and anything out of focus. Some lenses offer better bokeh then others. it isn't something measurable, but something desired in most shots.
Shooting at low f-stops also makes the depth of field thinner.

I played with the curves a bit to bring out the sky, but that's it really. 5/22/2006 1:21:29 AM |
ZiP All American 18939 Posts user info edit post |
my complaint with that shot is that it feels like youy may have kicked up the saturation too high, it feels sorta fakey almost... but then again, i've never seen that building in person. does look like a great shot though, aside from the color of the building
-ZiP!- 5/22/2006 1:22:57 AM |
Ronny All American 30652 Posts user info edit post |
That is the original. Messing with the curves to bring the sky out a bit of course altered the rest of the image, but I like it. More dramatic, I think. The color of the building isn't too far off though.

Also, I have an idea. How about we make images posted in this thread a certain resolution as to avoid side-scrolling.
Usually 640 is the standard as the longest dimension on a photo. 5/22/2006 1:35:34 AM |

yeah, i thought about fixing it... but then my time was up...
on a different note... iso 1600 for that picture... i hate it when i forget to switch
my first attempt at messing with the actual curve

My cousin just bought a Canon EOS 30D 4 or 5 days ago, I've been playing with the thing every second that it wasn't in his hands and I am ridiculously impressed. I don't really know much about digital SLR, at least as compared to some of you, but I think the precision and tonal quality is incredible. Unfortunately he only has the 55mm lens that came with it but it will suffice until we learn to use the camera to its potential. I don't have any pics to post yet but they're coming. 5/22/2006 1:46:16 AM |

I LOVE my 30D. I have a lot of free time this week, so I plan on shooting as much as possible.
The shots I've taken with my 60mm prime macro have been sharp as hell. I'll go ahead and post a 1/2 size since the page is about to flip and Randy fucked it up already anyway.

gotta love the close up with the wide angle...
my lense was damn near against the flower in this picture.
the shadow on the flower is from my lensehood... and the sun was not behind me...

lol! nah...u don't wanna use mine. its definitely not of you guys' caliber. if you can get a hold of an R1 or a Maxxum 7D, you've got a winner. anybody have ideas for a picture (somewhere in NC, preferrably NCSU) under the topic "textures and patterns"? i'm planning on something surprising anyways, but i could always use some creative input. 5/23/2006 12:51:45 AM |

any comments on that pic? i swear i didn't do anything to it besides levels. i can't believe the texture showed up on only 1 side of it. the blue "glow" is a tv behind the cup. basically took a picture of a lavender colored "fountain dining hall cup" with sprite in it in super macro mode and manual focus.

No offense, but the lighting is bad, the image is flat, it has no point of interest, and is soft. The texture is interesting, but that is pretty much it. That is a closeup snapshot, not a photo. There is not really any composition to it, and the point of view is boring (straight on shots usually are).
You won't win a contest with that.

Just make sure the light is even and doesn't fill in all of the shadows. The reflections are distracting. Don't handhold a shot at 1/30second. 5/24/2006 12:02:38 AM |
stowaway All American 11770 Posts user info edit post |
^^it's a point and shoot, 10mm doesn't really mean 10mm like on a 35mm based camera
also, the shutter speed was 1/10th, not 1/30th. 5/24/2006 10:27:53 AM |
chocolatervh All American 22986 Posts user info edit post |
