Quote : | "But you can't say it's unacceptable. That's a lie." |
OMG! IT'S FUCKING UNACCEPTABLE. And companies should prepare for this, like they have prepared for every other social movement or human need in the past.
A women who plans to still work while taking care of a baby should be treated with enough respect to not have to pump in the bathroom for however long she chooses to breastfeed her child. She is giving the company HER time. The least they can do is help her take care of her baby as mush as possible.
I'm sorry there are companies out there to do not have space, and therefore make women put other employees out because they -- as an entity -- refuse to give their employees some privacy in these types of situations. But if we continue to say it's "ok" or "acceptable" to breastfeed or pump in a bathroom, then people will continue to do so in disgust, and companies will never need to change their operations in order to continue saving those pennies that they must be saving by being assholes.
North Carolina has a shit ton of work to do on maternity reform, and the like (as in NC DOESN'T have a maternity policy, at all). So these things need to happen, and people still need to get upset so that reform can happen.
Companies like SAS, Cysco, Google, and and the like are popular employment place BECAUSE they take care of their employees and allow them to live their life while still being very much a part of a company. That's why those companies are popular.]2/26/2014 12:49:52 PM |

Or maybe I'm missing something here. I guess you're the next Ina May and have written the book on breastfeeding and pumping." |
Depending on the attitude of your employer and the quality of your restroom, it can be dehumanizing. Furthermore, pumping in the restroom can be inconvenient enough that many mothers just stop doing it altogether. They are often too embarrassed or intimidated to ask for another place. Since breastfeeding is regarded as a good thing, the government is enforcing a policy that will protect and promote pumping in the workplace.
If you'd like to understand more about why these laws exist, you can read the notes here:
http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=43.70.640
Please note that at no place did they say, "Eww, restrooms are gross!" For sure, a lot of restrooms are gross, but that still doesn't mean women who pump in there are being unsanitary and endangering their children.2/26/2014 12:53:37 PM |

Your link is riddled with notations on sanitary, hygienic and cleanliness standards. On its face a restroom is disqualified. Are you really going to argue that floating poop particles in the air are fine to contaminate breastmilk?
Quote : | "There are 120 viruses in feces, so when a toilet is flushed, water particles with more than 25,000 virues particles and 600,000 bacteria are ejected from the toilet bowl and can travel up to 20 feet away from the toilet. These particles will last several hours and have the potential, especially in public toilets, to cause disease. These water particles can contain bacteria such as salmonella, E.Coli or streptococcus. Inhaling contaminated airborne particles is unhealthy for individuals or groups of people who use private bathrooms and public restrooms." |

A friend of mine is a plant manager at a large manufacturer. On Friday evening, someone used an office bathroom, flushed the urinal, and was the last to leave the plant. The urinal somehow got clogged and never stopped flushing.
It flooded the entire floor of the plant over the weekend, the building is just under 100 yards in length. Estimating somewhere around $40k in damage.
My friend is currently annoyed. 2/26/2014 1:02:41 PM |

@puck_it: Rarely do I laugh out loud when reading shit online, but the "suck their tits dry" comment had me cleaning my screen. Classic.
If I didn't have a wife who nursed both of our kids, I'd think it was ridiculous for women to pump at work.
But I know better now. If you don't pump on a regular basis, you can get mastitis; which is a real mother fucker. My wife got twice and she had 102 temp, sick as shit.
== On another note, I used to get bombed and take her breast pump into the bathroom like I was going to milk myself. She wasn't amused. 2/26/2014 1:03:20 PM |

The issue isn't the need for a woman to pump, it is the scheduling of her pumping durin during peak break room access hours.2/26/2014 1:16:52 PM |

^^^^Restrooms are obviously disqualified but not because they're unsanitary. In fact, they imply that restrooms are sanitary.
And everybody knows about the particles in the air. That was fascinating in elementary school, but then nobody got sick, and hundreds of thousands of mothers pumped in restrooms without a sanitation/hygiene problem.
But, whatever, please keep accusing women of being unsanitary and endangering their children. It's not dishonest at all.
^Nobody really cares about your lunch, dude.

"She is giving the company HER time."
FALSE! She is getting paid for her time, and she is spending it locked in the break room instead of working. I would have no problem with this if she posted a schedule, but I'd be pretty pissed if I wanted my lunch and it was locked up without notice for an indeterminate amount of time regularly. Hopefully the guy that works at this place can find a diabetic or hypoglycemic coworker to convince HR to make her set and keep a schedule. 2/26/2014 1:23:27 PM |

oh wait...debate has moved on to 5:00...
I'm totally against this woman
don't be monopolizing public rooms at peak hours for your own private purposes... especially not on a regular basis
even if your private purpose is to milk your breasts
I mean, I got no problem with her using the break room to drain her titties...but she should be considerate enough not to do it at lunch...that's just baldly, almost deliberately inconsiderate
/m2c
