I don't know any zombies called brian, but I am pretty sure that evolution takes THOUSANDS of years. I am also pretty sure that Charles Darwin would agree with me.

In order to evolve you have to be reproducing. Individuals don't evolve, species do.

Zombies cannot breed. They cannot have sex. They cannot conceive. They cannot bring babies to term. They cannot give birth. Zombies cannot and will not evolve.

oh crap I did spell brain that wrong.

I concede. But what would you do if you were by yourself? (Think Andy DOTD '04)

Well, let's see, as long as the dead chicks were still warm...

um, I mean, I would probably just chill out and read a lot. Not a hell of a lot else you could do with the power out and all. Probably pull a Tom Hanks in "Castaway" and start talking to some sort of inanimate objects. Push heavy things out of windows to smash zombies. You know, nothing special.

Well some can. They did in Dead Alive, but that was more of a comedy/horror so I don't think it counts.

But yeah you could pass the time by picking out a random zombie and trying to throw a chair at him from the roof. There would probably be plenty of books although it would be limited to daytime (unless you had some candles, but I doubt there are many in UT). You could go into random rooms and shuffle through people's things and read their diaries and stuff. Sleeping would help pass the time. If it were possible, it might be a good idea to set some kind of alert system or something from the bottom floor so if the zombies broke the barricade it would wake you up/get your attention.

and here i thought i was the only psycho with an entire plan laid out in the event of a zombie attack............. anyways, how are zombies able to differentiate between fellow zombies and non-zombies. would you say it's possible to blend in with them (think Shawn of the Dead)?

In 28 Days Later, the zombies seemed to operate largely on sound -- they didn't attack unless you gave away your position by speaking or making some other non-zombie verbalization. The human olfactory sense being so poor, I can't imagine that it improves with zombification, so smell's probably right out.

It may be possible to blend in with them for a while, but it'd be highly risky -- any slip-up would give you a way, even a cough or hiccup.

i don't think you could ever blend in with them. i've never seen anyone get away with trying to act like a zombie.

The theories of how zombies tell the difference between them and their living counterparts are few and far between.

In DOTD '78, the zombies automatically knew if someone was human or not.

In Shaun of the Dead, you could blend in with them.

In DOTD '04, the zombies automicatlly knew if someone was human or not.

I'd say it be too risky.

So, Snewf, which one would you rather be confronted with--the human beings infected with the Rage virus or the living dead?

As for me, I'd go with the guys infected with the Rage virus. They would eventually starve to death, at which time I can go about the process of recivilizing the world and eventually be crowned 'King of the World'.

I dunno, it'd be easier to just kill someone than try to friggin' stab them through the brain with a blunt crowbar or something. Just cut em and run the hell away till they bleed to death. Or slap em around for a bit. Plus, with people who are still alive, it's less of a freak-out. If a guy with half his face gone just walked up on me and tried to eat me, I'd be slowed down in my reaction by having realize I'd just pissed myself, whereas you just punch the crazed guy and then beat him to death with the first thing that comes to hand.

^i concur. I like crowbars better than baseball bats because they're lighter. I also just feel deadlier with a crowbar in my hands. Bring it on.

Baseball bat has range over most crowbars, and in general its built to be wielded in the fashion that will be necessary.

Of course, there's shit all over here that could be used. Pipes, pieces of railing, fucking street signs -- all possible weapons.

Just thought of something. In the event that the mgr cities were overrun how long would it take before the govt started to drop nukes to neutralize the problem. Raleigh would prob be low on the list but the Big Cities would more than likely go up.

why would the government do that? the zombies will EVENTUALLY be under control, and when that happens, it would be nice to have cities still.

fuck a crowbar. You need what we in the construction trade call a tanker bar. 6 foot long, 1 inch thick, with spike on one end and a flat pry bar tip on the other. Plus as i work int he elevator trrade, i cna simply get on top of an elevator, rig it so the outside doors cannot be opened without explosives or a battering ram, and park the elvator wherever i want. Thus as long as i have power, I would rule any high rise building, letitng zombies shamble into an elevator, rigging doors to stay open so zombies could be pushed into them to fall to their second deaths, ect. Plus there is always taxing folks who need to get away form the zombie infested floors.

Also, if you are worried about ammo, go buy a few cases of the cheapest #8 or #9 shot trap loads walmart has. They will kill something jsut as dead as buckshot or magnum loads, plus are low recoil and thus easier to keep gun on target with. Go buy a cheap lee load all or similar shotgun press, a few 10 pound boces of powder, and some 20lb bags of shot. You now have enough suplies to fire 500-2500 rounds depending on how many cases of cheap ammo you bought, and then reload all of this amunition dozens of times. If properly holed up, the only use for amunition is for defense while on supply runs and the like.

you can't assume that you will have time to loot. you should always keep zombie emergency supplies accessible in a moment's notice.

who said anythign aboiut power? i can get anywhere in an elevator hatch with the power dead. I can even run the elevators up to the top floor witht hem about 39% of rated laod with supplies with 0 power. Elevators have a counterweight that weighs whatever the weight of the elvator is plus 40% of the rated load of passengers oor freight, ect. Thus with 39% laod i cna pick the brake by hand and let it run itself up to the top floor. Also its not that hard to get around in an elevator hatch, movies non withstanding.

That thought occurs to me far too frequently.

I mean, OK...so yeah, your whole family is dead, and so are most of your friends, and all that...but after it's all wrapped up, you basically inherit the Earth. Well, a big-assed chunk of it, anyway. And if your friends are dead, that means the assholes are all dead, too. If you're really lucky, you'll find them zombified and get to crack their skulls open.

Infinite free shit. Take anything you want. Move around with no restrictions or shack up in the nicest house in town. Do whatever: read all day, build something, tear something down, learn some now-useless subject, drink yourself blind, do drugs (how long do drugs last, anyway?), shoot stuff, explore everything. This is one of those areas in which the Id would like to get out like Snewf implied earlier. You lose all of society's limitations without losing much of the infrastructure.

And it's all good if you're with your survivor buddies, too. Sure, you still have to follow the "Don't fuck with other people" rule, but there's so few people that it's a lot easier to do something without fucking with someone.

...and looking back at that I'm gonna go ahead and think maybe I should've shut up by the word "me"
