I kept waiting for something "major" to happen in this episode, but it was kinda nice to have suspense without it being our protagonists vs whisperers. It was also nice to see how our characters are dealing with the loss of so many people in the last episode without having to jump right back and deal with more conflict, good character development.
I didn't quite understand why Carol is leaving Ezekiel (I guess she needs a fresh start to get over henry?).
How far south would the whisperers have to go to escape the "blizzard". Like hell they went down to South Carolina or further and then came all the way back up. It's not like they are actually coming back to anything (they have no settlement). I guess they just had to explain how Alpha survived that storm without any shelter. And wtf with Alpha being lashed, what is she getting "strong" for? Why is she going to stir up conflict? Does she even know that they crossed into her territory or is she just trying to make up for "being weak"?
I didn't like that everyone was on the road for the worst of the storm. I could try to explain it off that it was a period of severe coldness before the storm that finally drove them out of the kingdom, and that it was random chance that the blizzard came. I'm nitpicking, and I guess I can give the show some freedom to force them to have to cross into Alpha's territory. 3/31/2019 11:25:23 PM |

I don't see how the Whisperers would even know if they went through their territory? They weren't there at all and any footprints would have been covered up by snow in a matter of minutes? I guess she could have left some people behind, but even then, they were in near whiteout conditions, so visibility would be really low.
Also, if they wanted to take out the Whisperer's gigantic army of zombies, now would have been the time. If all the zombies were frozen solid for likely weeks on end, they have no real means of threatening them. 4/1/2019 9:16:10 AM |

I imagine Alpha and her crew returning to their territory and finding a mound of dead bodies with their heads cut off and arrows through their heads would be pretty indicative that someone crossed into their borders.
They might not know for sure which group it was, but they would know that SOMEONE had been in their area.
That being said, the entire episode felt like a plot device to start the redemption of Negan and push the groups to a more centralized location. They had to have Alpha and Crew move out of the area because their entire group would have died in the storm, but I guess maybe they're nomadic and just avoid the Winter in general(no way they could have predicted that massive storm early enough to get out of the area fast enough right?). So wouldn't Lydia have told them that Alpha and Co were likely out of the area? Just felt odd.

^That's a good point. Lydia would have known that the Whisperers wouldn't be sticking around in the winter.
Can someone clear up what is going on with Gabriel and Sadiq btw? Did Rosita cheat on Gabriel and he's just kinda fine with it? 4/1/2019 5:53:42 PM |

Maybe I wasn't paying attention enough, but why did they abandon The Kingdom?
And what's this crap about zombies freezing for weeks and/or roads being impassable for weeks. This is eastern Virginia we're talking about. It's never that cold for such an extended amount of time.
The writing seems to be pretty crappy these days. 4/2/2019 9:40:31 AM |

^I think they were relying more and more on the other communities for food, and given how harsh that winter was, it was getting more difficult to keep supply lines going between them all. I'm not entirely sure what was going on with all that plumbing, though. Earlier on in this season, it showed Henry fixing some pipes and stuff down there. 4/2/2019 3:32:01 PM |

Ezekiel also mentioned that the fires were another reason (you can see all the burned buildings when they walked out of the gates). The crack in their bedroom was also getting bigger, indicating the buildings were falling apart. 4/2/2019 5:03:19 PM |

Working my way through season 9 now and I’m really liking it so far.
Lots of focus on rebuilding society, lots of new characters with interesting qualities, way more nuance in how the main characters feel about each other.
The relationship between rick and michonne was always awkward to me but I like the chemistry with carol and the king guy. 9/9/2019 5:53:15 PM |

Agreed, this show needs to die already, and to stay dead.
After Negan and his antics, it just seems that the Whisperers aren't really that much of a threat. They keep playing it up like they are but it just doesn't seem like it. The Whisperers themselves live a miserable life, sleeping outside on the ground, constantly wearing nasty/bloody clothes and rotten flesh. 10/16/2019 8:58:15 AM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
I think the interesting thing about the Whisperers was the mystery surrounding them, now that the curtains have been pulled back a bit, they just seem like another batch of lost souls being run by a maniac who doesn't have the organization or control she tried to convince our band of survivors she does.
The only element of The Whisperers that is a threat is the concept of them using a horde as a WMD but this last episode they essentially killed that concept, imo, because Beta said there were "too many" and there weren't more than 30-40 and they couldn't really keep that herd organized. Also seemed ridiculous that a girl looking up or whimpering would give someone away but when they were whispering loudly to one another none of the zombies cared.
Negan feels like he is just being wasted. It's clear they're trying to setup a redemption arc and he's going to prove essential in this impending "war", but it's just moving at such a slow pace that even the best character still on the show(outside of Judith) has become dull.
Will be interesting to see how this season plays out with one main character confirmed to be leaving the show and another confirmed to be joining the show.
Also, this show really needs to find a new element to build drama/action without relying on impossibly random groups(10-20) of zombies that just show up at the most inconvenient times for no apparent fucking reason. 10/16/2019 9:51:26 AM |

Do the Whisperers even have a single gun? They mostly rely on knives and zombies as their weapons, but if they even break character and stab someone, the regular zombies would see it and attack them. If the regular crew knows there could be a giant horde coming, I feel like there would be a number of ways they could take out mass quantities of zombies like they have in the past. It just doesn't seem like the Whisperers really compare to any of the previous threats. 10/16/2019 1:25:33 PM |

I have never hunted boar but would a rock from a slingshot really be powerful enough to stun one of them for that long? I feel like wild boars probably have really thick skin/skulls.
Also, this is now like 9 years after surviving in a world with zombies, and they still somehow manage to sneak up on Negan in the woods. Kelly and the deaf girl, yeah, that makes sense, but Negan is an expert zombie slayer by now. There is absolutely no way a single zombie should be able to get anywhere near him without him knowing it. 11/5/2019 8:41:58 AM |

^My thoughts exactly. Beta is the only one even suspicious of him, which is stupid since it has set Alpha up to be smarter than that. She kills her own people for simply asking her a question and she just seems perfectly fine with Negan.
He tells them that he's been locked up there for 8 years and he is willing to spill the beans on everything, but they didn't ask him a single question about them? They could have even just asked him a bunch of questions that they already knew the answer to in order to see if he is telling the truth but nothing. He's so obvious he is trying to set up some kind of redemption arc and he's gonna end up saving Alexandria & co in the future. 11/12/2019 3:29:47 PM |

Rick actually didn't die. He was severely wounded in the bridge explosion and somehow that junkyard lady that looks like Mick Jagger managed to call a helicopter (from who knows what group/where) stuff wounded Rick inside, then evacuate the area. I think in the show's time, that was like 6 years ago so when he inevitably shows up in the final episode to save the day, he'll have some splainin to do. 11/21/2019 9:59:39 AM |

Yeah the midseason finale just put the "pieces" in place for the 2nd half of the season but was overall a waste of an episode.
The entire Carol & Posse deal made NO sense. Michonne going on her voyage seems like just an excuse to limit her on-screen time.
The only interesting part of the episode was the opening where they forced Rosita to kill zombie Saddiq in front of their baby.
Also still find it ridiculous just how many random groups of zombies show up at inopportune times. 11/26/2019 9:29:11 AM |

The sex scene, that was weird, but I think that's the point.
And then I thought Jerry was going to get stuck in Floyd's tomb, buy he got out
Then Carol's attempt to burn it all down made the cave collapse.

The caves make little to no sense.
Carol has gone from one of the best characters on the show to currently, arguably, the worst.
Daryl is fine, but full babysitter mode is boring. Plus, I miss the dog.
This show has completely abandoned meaningful random deaths, and it really kills any type of suspense they're regularly, albeit painfully, trying to create.
Seems like the constant "split the group up for production costs" thing is going to continue and it is painfully slowing down the story and killing any character development. 2/25/2020 1:18:03 PM |

Ugh this writing is so fucking bad. Like 80s horror movie bad.
Why the hell would you shoot Beta in the chest and then just walk away while he's laying there motionless? Shoot him again, in the head to a) make sure he's dead, and b) to ensure he doesn't come back to life!

Ugh, with a side of "what?"
That's how I felt after the last episode.
Predictable that EVERY major character, save for 1 old one, survived what looked like the complete destruction of Hilltop. How did NONE of the main characters go down in that shit-storm of fire/zombies/whisperers? Ugh.
The most obvious scene/twist happened, that was so heavy-fisted in it's delivery/story all season that it was just boring and almost reached the point of not mattering. Once again, ugh.
There were 2 "what?" scenes that I found odd. So, here is the Spoiler section for those that haven't seen it:
- What was up with the dude, seemingly, recognizing Beta without his mask? I imagine we'll get more backstory, but it's almost like Beta was a former celebrity or athlete or something.
- Carol was the mastermind all along? What? Why? How? Why does that make any sense? Why was her character CONSTANTLY putting her people in danger if she knew Negan was going to be taking her down anyway? Her idiotic actions, her random crying, selfish decisions, etc, none of that makes any sense based on this "twist".
End spoilers. But still, ugh and what rule the day. Outside of Judith, having a hard time liking any of these characters. I fucking miss the dog at this point. 3/17/2020 11:54:29 AM |

Exactly!!! Even if you thought he was dead, he's like 7ft tall. You don't want a 7ft tall zombie walking around in your own fucking house.
And agreed on Carol, so she somehow let Negan out? Why did she all of the sudden trust him enough for that? The only reason Negan is still on the show is because he was a popular character. Pretty sure he would have just left the whole area, he is strong enough to survive on his own. I know they are trying to give him a redemption arc but after seeing him bash Glenn and Abraham's brains in with a fucking baseball bat I don't see how any character on this show would ever accept him again.
Oh yeah, and that one dude had a clear enough shot with a bow and arrow to hit zombie Gamma in the head from like 30 ft away. WHY WOULD HE NOT SHOOT BETA IN THE HEAD WITH THE ARROW?!?!?

^Agreed. The enjoyable moments of this show are when people go out into the unknown and we get to see a glimpse of the rest of the world. Being contained in Alexandria and the surrounding areas and focusing on the conflict between different factions was fine for a while, but I found myself way more interested in the story of what went down at the Naval base and what is going on in the city that Eugene & co are going to. 3/30/2020 11:04:54 AM |
