ZiP's making the most of his time in NYC. I just finished working on my StL pics ZiP. Here are some:
This is at the St. Louis zoo, forgot what display it was for.
And some animals.
These are frogs from my cousins backyard.
I'll be posting more in the morning. 5/29/2006 4:16:11 AM |

vicious shots of the Zoo!
i like the first frog shot better than the second, and i'm a huge fan of the contrast/exposure of the ape wax figure. super crisp with the giraffe, good stuff man.
random question about your watermark: why do you use 2 pipes in between your name and the email address? Is that consistent with your business card/letterhead/resume/website? I do always love the DIN typeface though (of the 2006 VAL MAUN).

Hey folks, would it be too much trouble to ask if you guys posted the settings used to take some of these pictures?
That would help me learn 5/29/2006 11:01:41 AM |

^great call there man.
for some of the people that recently picked up DSLRs, one nice thing about them is that typically they include the camera's settings for when a shot was taken within the out-of-camera file. often times resaving into different formats (either after retouching or after resizing/optimizing for the web), this file info gets lost.
but sure, i'll try to post more info with my shots in the future.

Whats up ZiP. Yea, I had the watermark with one pipe before and it didnt quite look right. It isn't consistant with my other collateral though so maybe I should revert. Thanks for the dap on the zoo shots. As for the frog one, I totally agree. I enjoy the pattern but overall I like the first frog one better.
As for the settings I'll try and do that more often.
Heres a shot on the Mississippi river, standing in front of the arch at the buttcrack of dawn.
The arch, but it didnt turn out very well.
Heres a bench that looked kinda sad and lonely. I found it interesting because its at the fringe of a cemetary and right next to an orchard. The exposure came out bad though and I had focusing issues after the fact.
This is the shot after the cherub one I posted earlier. These were both taken at the cemetary where my grandparents are buried.
These 2 were taken from a car on the highway and I had to shoot with the windows up. They came out acceptable though.

One Be Lo (aka One Man Army of Binary Star):
f/stop = 2.0 lens = fixed 50mm shutter speed = not sure
RJD2 (of Soul Position, Blueprint is not pictured here):
f/stop = 1.8 lens = fixed 50mm shutter speed = not sure

^nice man, i like the selective color palette of somewhat-earthtones. i'd almost suggest, if you were to reshoot the same thing, to shoot the end of the guitar slightly more to the right of the frame, and then tell your camera to focus on the right of the frame. at the moment, the focus is so narrow that even the closest part of the guitar (the very end) is out of focus. unless there is something really significant about it being a Les Paul model, in which case, disregard what I'm suggesting. nice shot

^^^Nice Here's a few from last summer's trip to Niagara Falls, taken with a Fuji S5000. Kind of curious what kinds of suggestions or comments any of you may have.
These are taken from the top of the Skylon Tower. It's shadow is visible in the 1st pic below.
Might have been in the car when I took this one.

^^^ Those shots and composition look great. Unfortunately, shots aren't perfect out of camera and the dslr and slr-like apperance camera manufacturers expect you do a little post processing. Like I said, they're good but if you worked a little with the curves on those photos it would add a little pop. 5/30/2006 12:47:54 AM |

^^^Maybe a tad overexposed (causing clouds to look blotchy?), sharpened too much.
D70s with ordinary 18-55mm
Could mess with it more because its kind of dark. Maybe more exposure or up the ISO? All are ISO 200
Everyone has one of these. ho hum
I also feel that this one is dark for some reason

^I was using my cheapo 50mm 1.8 lens. The settings were: 50mm, f1.8, 1/50th of a second. Since its on my 20D, the crop factor being 1.6, it helped me get close enough. Those photos are uncropped. 5/30/2006 3:47:20 AM |

Heres a shot on the way home from NYC to Boston on the "Chinatown" bus. Kinda sucks with the color fringing but the contrast is so high it can't be stopped.

Samsung CRT but on OS X, which has the color calibration -- so I am at least getting a more accurate look than windows (I have noticed that stuff that comes from windows to mac is darker, so that probably means that it's too bright on most windows machines).
With that said, it looks about the same on my dell LCD at work, though.

hey willyummm: sounds like a great plan. if you're willing to put in a little time later, when you get pack, with some post-shooting correction, you'll be really happy with the professional results that SLRs have to offer. By all means shoot as much as ya can in Paris/Europe!
