omg...bacon flavored beer
that might be the best thing in the world! 8/15/2010 1:53:41 PM |

It took some getting used to. I mean it was good and no one likes bacon as much as I do, but you just don't expect to have a beer that smells like bacon.
Oh and then I had the Brooklyn Pennant Ale which actually reminded me a bit of Sierra's regular Pale Ale.

Had you never had a smoked beer before? They're relatively common these days, though the one you had probably has the strongest smokiness of any of them. Aecht also makes a helles lager that isn't brewed with any smoked malt, but the smokiness has permeated all the brewing equipment over the years so you can still taste it, but it's much less prominent. 8/15/2010 3:46:53 PM |

No, I have and I realize they have a distinctive smell/aftertaste but I've never had one that smelled completely like bacon. The people I was with, who drink a lot of different kinds of beer as well, were surprised at just how pungent it was as well.
I really liked the Sierra Imperial Smoked Porter when I had that. I know I said earlier I wasn't a huge fan of the beers with a hint of coffee or cocoa but the ISP actually did have that but it was mixed well with the smoke flavor.8/16/2010 12:50:15 PM |

i somewhat enjoy Aecht's smoked weizen over the marzen but they are both very good beers. They remind me quite a bit of campfires which always resonates great in my mind 8/16/2010 1:06:21 PM |

Foothills Peoples Porter is quite tasty. I was more than impressed. The brewery's strengths really are in their dark beers. 8/20/2010 8:38:55 AM |

I had the Tumbler on draft on an empty palate a few days ago and it was a lot better. I don't know where that coffee taste was coming from. Only thing I can think of is I did have coffee in the AM and had it with lunch on that occasion.
Thumbs up the second time around. 8/20/2010 8:41:13 AM |

yes Tumbler is quite good. SN has had a stellar 2010 and i'm sure Celebration Ale will not disappoint this winter.
I spent last night at a friends drinking some canadian beers. These weren't craft beers by any means, but he just got back from vacationing up there and brought back a couple cases of our favorites from our summers up there a few years back. Alexander Keiths, Creemore Springs, and Steamwhistle. decent beer, better memories. 8/20/2010 8:47:20 AM |

Anyone had the Sierra Southern Hemisphere Harvest? Or know where to get it?
Also, I finally had the Old Rasputin XII on Friday night. One of my buddies was in a generous mood and bought it to split and he had like one sip. So good. Great aroma and color and great taste. It was a bit heavy to have on a night where binge drinking cheap beer afterward was in order though. 8/23/2010 11:51:55 AM |

Yeah, good call. I'll have to check that out next Spring/Summer I suppose. Is the taste really all that different form the regular Harvest Ale?
I gotta make a run to Total Wine sometime this week. Any suggestions? 8/23/2010 5:10:55 PM |

you aren't missing much, to me there was nothing that stood out from a run of the mill IPA. I remember it feeling crisp, which was good but it didn't blow me away.
If i were you i'd get the early jump on some fall seasonals. Weyerbacher pumpkin is out as is Cottonwood if you like pumpkin ales. It's may still be a little too warm out to really get in the pumpkin/fall mood, but i'm personally ready. 8/23/2010 5:19:18 PM |

Great Divide Rumble is pretty rad, it's an oak-aged IPA. If you like dark beers the recent Duck Rabbit seasonals (schwarzbier and dopplebock) are pretty awesome.8/23/2010 5:59:34 PM |

Went to City Beverage in W/S.... So many rare and/or vintage bottles. A lot of imports and you can even grab a pint while you shop.
Picked up quite the assortment (sampling a few winter warmers/holiday ales) before deciding on my next home brew.

Am I the only one who doesn't don't enjoy bourbon barrel beer? I still will try a release but I'm not sure why; one of the reasons I drink beer is my distaste for liquor and I find these barrel aged beers to have way too much alcohol burn.

^^It depends on the beer.
The first bourbon-beer I tried was a lighter one (it was a lighter Allagash), and the bourbon just completely overshadowed the beer...which sucked because I know it was a delicious Allagash. So that soured me on bourbon beers for a while. Then I was putting together a drink/wine/beer menu for a bar my friend was opening and we were tasting beers from beverage reps and ran across a couple more "bourbon-beers", and several of them were very good. It definitely has to be paired with a stronger beer as to not over-take the beer. But when done right, it can be quite tasty. 8/31/2010 12:32:54 PM |

I'm on BA as well, but i very rarely post a review. I enjoy rating and tasting beers, but probably not to the degree that some of their power users do. Thus I don't waste much time writing a review on there. But it is a great resource when standing in the beer store wondering what to get and you can find some power reviewers that have very similar tastes as yourself and very rarely go wrong.
also, the forums can get interesting at times. 9/9/2010 2:17:17 PM |
