ambro, growing your own is an EXCELLENT point Mucho cheaper, if you don't count the personal time invested I prefer my own produce. (although this takes available pots/acerage)
2/12/2009 11:56:59 PM
^ not to mention I think there is a certain amount of satisfaction in knowing that the food you are eating was grown with your own two hands
2/12/2009 11:58:17 PM
cabbage and lentils will feed 2 people like 4 times for $3 or less
2/12/2009 11:58:30 PM
I wish I could grow my own... living in a concrete jungle fucking sucks
2/12/2009 11:58:34 PM
And how environmentally friendly it is compared to what's available in the grocery stores.

I grow my own herbs, but since i rent then I have not had the chance to get a full on garden going. My friend lives on 6 acres and already has a pretty nice garden going, so I think I am going to convince her to let me start my own out there
2/13/2009 12:02:36 AM
i bet if you offered to help w/ the labor, you could increase the size of garden, and share. I know I split my crop w/ all involved.
2/13/2009 12:04:15 AM
that's the plan. she has plenty of room and is all about it. I want to grow a variety of peppers, and she has none of those in there now. She also has no tomatoes or cucumbers, so I would like to get those going. between the two of us we could have a pretty badass little garden.

calm downbut, you did say 'rice', without qualifying it. so, i got you there at least
2/13/2009 12:13:58 AM
well geez louise does everything need to be qualified haha. well i guess if you are asking how to eat healthy maybe i should have been more specific. but it seemed like common sense
2/13/2009 12:16:42 AM
COMMON SENSE ON TWW???SCORPIONS IN MY VAGINA???MEN ON MARS???
2/13/2009 12:19:47 AM
getting specific on "healthy" is all about the qualifiers. Not all foods in all situations are optimal/healthy.you could vaguely say "eat lots of fruits/veggies w/ a major protein source"[Edited on February 13, 2009 at 12:22 AM. Reason : ]
2/13/2009 12:21:04 AM
and with the right amount of physical activity, you can pretty much eat whatever you want tolook at Phelps

2/13/2009 12:42:04 AM
I eat endless amounts of oatmeal (insanely cheap), whole wheat pasta (stock up on triple coupon weekend and its pennies per meal) and whey protein. In fact, that's currently all I have in my pantry. (Plus a daily multivitamin) At the rate I'm going, my monthly power bill exceeds my grocery bill. But I admit my diet is strange.
2/13/2009 12:53:06 AM
^^ so you are saying that is a healthy diet?
2/13/2009 12:53:52 AM
^ duh, no dude. No, you can't. Eating shit will still affect your health negatively and catch up with you one day. One day very soon.^^ oatmeal and whole wheat pasta are very healthy, but i hope you are eating veggies/fruits, and a few protein sources as well (beans, lentils, animal flesh, low-fat dairy).
2/13/2009 1:00:45 AM
well the point I was trying to make was that you can eat unhealthy and get away with it if you have the workout plan that someone that Phelps has. You stop that plan, and you will get fat as shitoh, and it will make you smoke pot
2/13/2009 1:02:37 AM
If I consistently ate like i eat at work, i would be in much better shape.normal meal at work is about 4 ounces of meat (beef, pork, or chicken), 3-4 stalks of broccolini, some brussel sprouts, and a sauce normally made from white wine or stock with a little (maybe 2 tsp.) of herb compound butter for a little flavor and body.

it's marginally cheap, but my normal week's worth of groceries:3 plum tomatoes (will explain this later)baby spinach3-4 red pepperscarrots7 broccoli crowns1 can almonds18 eggs2 top loin steaks2 4-packs turkey breast cutletsdried fruit7 yogurts (as few additive ingredients as possible)Things that'll last more than a week, but end up getting ~ every other weekgarlic headlong grain brown ricewhole wheat bread loafOn sundays after the grocery store, I'll make a balsamic vinagrette and roated peppers for the week.Slice the tomatoes into 1/4" slices, lining the bottom of a glass baking pan, single layerdice 5 cloves of garlic, mix wtih 4 tbspn evoo, brush over tomatoesthrown in oven at 400 for like 10 minutes or sothow into blender with fresh basil, another tbspn of evoo, 3 tbspn balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper to taste, liquifyI'll use this dressing for the rest of the week for lunch saladsI'll roast the red peppers and skin, then store the peppers in a jar with olive oil (and using last weeks red pepper olive oil in ^ is killer too)I'll do a simple black pepper rub on one of the steaks, grill the steak, slice thin and portion 4oz poritons into containers.Breakfast:3 scrambled eggs, (2 whites, 1 white+yolk)1 slice whole wheat toastSnack:1/4 cup almondsLunch:Spinach salad, roasted red pepper slices, carrots, 1 of the steak portion containers and then the balsamic on the side.yogurtsnack: dried fruitdinner:turkey breast cutlet, grilled (play with marinades to keep it interesting, but be careful your marinade ingredeints... keep it simple and away from sugarssteamed broccoli crownbrown riceI like to either grill or broil the turkey, and can have the dinner prepped, cooked, plated in under 20 minutes. For the breakfast, I'll make the lunch and pack it while cooking the breakfast, and can do it all and be eating in under 15 minutes. It doesn't take that much more time or effort, and materials for a weeks worth of this meal plan (notice no frozen, mostly fresh but the yogurt) works out to be ~$7-8/day.If you skip the steaks for lunch it's considerably less

Just trying to think of some things that havent been mentioned much:--cous cous--skippy natural pb--big bottle of fish oils from target--generic cereal has some bang for the buckand the obvious: oatmeal, frozen chicken breast, veggies, etcFor those sick of eating healthy. Spice it up a little. Buy some basil, oregano, seasoning salt, etc. It really adds some flavor to boring chicken dishes and isnt bad for you at all. Even go with pickles or something. Go wild. Dream big.
2/13/2009 10:07:34 AM
^ I bought that big bottle of fish oil for my dog. They have the 375 pill bottle at Costco for like $12

You don't really need a "decent" one. There are a lot of very affordable systems -- certainly less expensive than most fish tanks. For instance, the Institute of Simplified Hydroponics (http://www.carbon.org/) uses these very inexpensive systems for their charity outreach. Also, you don't have to get expensive indoor lighting. You can grow on your deck, patio, driveway, window, etc.[Edited on February 13, 2009 at 10:20 AM. Reason : ]

I am not a good cook (which really sucks because my mom is the best cook evar). However, I do a decent job of living on:Peanut butter/honey sandwichesEl-cheapo soupTurkey/cheese sandwiches (a la Sam's)PastaChicken/riceI haven't had a job since October and I truly don't think I could balance one with my current class schedule and workload, so I've really really had to cut back on food spending, along with everything else.

^^Well, 13 people means 13 suspects. Also, you say that you call them out. What does that consist of?Lastly, I agree that freaking out would be bad when you don't know who did it. However, you should consider doing at least something. You can study their schedules to figure out who it is, or you could even use some kind of surveillance or tamper-proof trap. To me, stealing 1 dollar isn't much better than stealing 100 dollars, so I would definitely not allow it. If it came to it, I'd threaten legal action.

a healthy snack is raw almonds. I buy the Target brand and they are $4.25 for 12.5oz. They can last for a while. Good to eat when you are hungry! Protein def keeps you satisfied.
