Son of a bitch, looks like the design is changing

Quote :
"This is... odd. But here's the very long story short. Japan's Holiday Autos is reporting that Toyota has decided to scrap the design of the so far pretty much beloved FT-86. Don't worry, the FT-86 and its rear-wheel drive, simple, cheap, sporty self isn't in danger. Toyota had three competing designs to work worth and have picked one that they liked better than the car we saw in Tokyo. That is their right and privilege.

This new design is reportedly the work of a Northern American design team also known as Calty Design Research, beating out Toyota's other European and Japanese proposals. The European team is responsible for the FT-86 concept we've seen so far. Trouble is, we have no idea what this new car looks like and we like how the concept looked. FT86club.com has a rendering of what the new car may look like posted here. But again, who knows? Especially as Holiday Autos doesn't strike us as the most trustworthy of sources. We'll try to do some digging and keep you posted. Tip of the floppy fedora to Cameron!"

Here's a photo of what the new design is rumored to look like.

http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/10/rumormill-has-toyota-scrapped-the-design-of-the-ft-86/

This alarms me, as in general I HATE the American Toyota designs. They're all godawful.

Quote :
"The new Calty designed FT-86 will have less aggressively carved and curved surfaces, will feature increased overhangs (boo!), and have a higher front fascia (in all likelihood to meet current pedestrian safety requirements"

Translation: uglier and worse handling

Still no production version... the same Concept shown at Geneva.

Nice pics here: http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/toyota-ft-86-sports-concept-family-portrait/full/

I am disappointed that there is not MR2 in that pic I posted (but they mentioned it in the accompanying press release). Also, they have the last Supra in that pic, but not the last Celica... they chose the ugly generation of Celica Picture is incomplete and inconsistent.

^^It's not really an inconsistent photo. The MR2 is not shown b/c it's a 2 seater. The rest of those cars are 2+2's.

"Toyota touts its hotly anticipated FT-86 coupe as a quick, light and attractive sports car for the masses. One of its strongest selling points is a price tag that reportedly hovering somewhere around $20,000 in base form, making the rear-drive coupe an affordable option for cash-strapped enthusiasts.

However, a report from Autocar claims that higher than expected development costs could derail any dreams of a good looking, inexpensive FT-86. The British site sites unnamed Toyota sources as saying that the base price of the little coupe has shot from £13,000 ($20,000 in U.S. funds) to £15,000 ($23,000 U.S.), with a range-topper coming in at £17,000 ($26,000 U.S.). Further, Autocar reports that Toyota sports vehicle department head Tetsuya Tada says that the company has increased the targeted FT-86 age group has been bumped by a full 10 years from the 30s to the 40s.

If the report turns out to be true, we're sure there will be more than a few disappointed enthusiasts out there. But if Toyota still delivers on the attractive, lightweight, rear driver, we're sure we can find it in our hearts to forgive an extra few thousand green-backs."

Not exactly great news

The bad news is more how they're "focusing" on an older demographic.

Unless this car has close to 300hp or weighs under 2800lbs it will get blown out of the water by almost every coupe on the market. Genesis, Mustang, Camaro all have 300hp for less than $25k.

Quote :
"According to 7Tune, Toyota recently held at shindig in Japan for select scribes in order to get some things straight about its Toyota G's performance vehicles. Naturally, talk quickly turned to the FT-86 (or FR-S) Although it was reported two months ago that the much-anticipated sports coupe would be delayed until 2013 for design and powerplant reasons, the Toyota engineers at the event reportedly attested that "the car is on schedule" and still has a planned release date of November 2011.

Clarity on the lineup was offered as well: Three spec levels will be available with at least two engines, and the mid-range model is expected to run around 2.5 million yen ($28,500 USD). Further, it appears that a turbocharged variant will take the top slot. According to 7Tune, none of those engines will be a hybrid – that tech is being reserved for a different sporty product.

If there's any news from the event that makes us as excited as word that we might see the car next year, it's the head of the sports division saying that "because of Toyota's connection with Subaru, there was no way that the car wasn't going to be great." We hope he knows what he's talking about"

Unless this car has 300hp at that "mid-line" price of $28,500 it has already priced itself out of competition. Or is that $28,500 gonna be less in the US since the 28.5 is just a direct conversion of the JDM price

Photo of the latest version, unveiled today at the NY Auto Show. It looks like it will be sold in the US as a Scion, which does nothing but piss me off. Also the longer this car takes to come out the more I think it will be overpriced, overweight and underperforming. And then Toyota will say "see, nobody will buy these this is why we don't make coupes".

^^^I'm pretty sure Toyota and Subaru will both have turbo versions.

Motor Trend apparently did a brief article on it recently and Toyota is still claiming that their target weight is 2700lbs and that their handling target is the Porsche Cayman. If either of these facts are anywhere near the truth I'll be deeply impressed.

If it's sold as I Scion I won't care too much...as long as it doesn't have a Scion shitbox low rent interior

Here's a photo comparing it's size to the Miata, Genesis Coupe and Mustang.

and that pertains to this how??

I get it you like high winding motors. The EJ20 can rev pretty well its when you make it 2.5l it starts to not enjoy high RPM.

The new 2.0 is rumored to have toyota's direct injection system on it too.

Seriously though a low mounted Mid-rear Boxxer 4 setup will be the best balanced car i can think of off the top of my head if executed correctly.

ZOMG! YAAAY A light weight Japanese small sports car again! I'd totally own one if a few years!1

I'm deeply impressed at the target weight and finally another car that's not trying to be larger than all the other cars in the market, the size is PERFECT, as is the weight. GG ToyoBaru <3

"Scion FR-S designed with a rollcage in mind and other key tidbits

By Jeff Glucker

The diehards at Club4AG have been patiently waiting for a new generation of sports car from Toyota. It seems one of the sites founding members got a closer look at what's in store for the production version of the Toyota FT-86 II/Scion FR-S. User Moto-P got the chance to attend a dinner meeting with chief project engineer Tetsuya Tada, and it sounds like many a bean was spilled.

It's apparent from Moto-P's time spent with Tada that the upcoming vehicle is designed to be a true sports car, for true enthusiasts. The engine has been tuned by Yamaha to produce inspiring sounds. Racers will appreciate the space left on either side of the dash, which is there to accommodate a rollcage without also requiring that you cut up the dashboard. There's even a chance the car will come sans CD player and navigation unit to keep things light and simple in the cabin, yet an iPod connection would still be offered.

Moto-P goes on to express his love for the brand, the main engineer and the upcoming car itself. It's clear that this person is a huge fan, so we take everything said in the forum with a grain of salt. Still, it's interesting to hear about what may be in store for the long-awaited FT-86/Toyobaru. "

No word on the vehicle's curb weight, but good news nonetheless. And hopefully it's truthful

Are these leaked legit photos? They look like the real deal to me. If so this looks pretty attractive (though I wish the hood was a bit sleeker).

If this car weighs 2600 lbs there's a good chance I'll be lining up at the dealership for a test drive.

"Excitement continues to build towards the launch of Toyota’s next sports car, currently known as FT-86. While the final production specification has yet to be announced, we can now officially confirm some of the key technical details ahead of the car’s on sale date next year.
Here’s what to expect beneath that sleek exterior…
The FT-86 final production model will be powered by a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated engine jointly developed with Subaru. This will combine Subaru’s proven boxer engine architecture with Toyota’s D-4S injection system to deliver increased horsepower and torque without sacrificing fuel consumption and environmental performance.
In keeping with the sports car looks, the final car will be available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual is designed to offer quick and precise shifts with a short-throw, while the automatic gearbox will feature sporty gear changes controlled by steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifts. Power will be distributed effectively to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential.
The new sports car will utilise an entirely new front-engine, rear-wheel drive platform that will offer the driver confident stability and manoeuvrability, while still being quick and nimble into and out of any corner. The FT-86 final production model will combine compact dimensions, lightweight design and a low centre of gravity to ensure the best possible power-to-weight ratio.
To find out more about the development of FT-86, click on the video below to see Akihiro “Dezi” Nagaya, General Manager Toyota Design Division, explain the processes and philosophies behind the design of the latest vision of the sports concept, FT-86 II.

"When the Toyota 2000 GT was built, I was eleven years old – and I loved it. I said: “I want to drive something like this when I grow up”. My dream came true when I drove a 2000 GT in a vintage car rally. That was a really great experience. I want young people to feel those same desires when they see a new Toyota sports car. I want to transfer the thrill of the race track to our vehicles, and make driving fun and exciting for our customers.’ Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation.

Since Toyota began the development of its 2-cylinder boxer engined Sports 800 in 1962, the company has maintained a long history of creating exciting, driver-focused sports cars that have proved as popular with the public as they have been successful in competition.

The beautiful 2000 GT helped establish the company’s global reputation as a sports car manufacturer.

With its reputation for delivering pure excitement and embodying the fundamental joy of driving, the Corolla Levin AE86 is the inspiration behind Toyota’s latest sports car concept, the Future Toyota-86 II.

Sharing its predecessor’s front engine, rear-wheel drive credentials, the FT-86 II concept introduces a new generation of sports car which perfectly recaptures the exhilarating spirit of the last Corolla Levin AE86.

Passion is Back, the FT-86 II concept Gives Form to the Intrinsic Joy of Driving
With the proportions of its long, low bonnet, high wings and rear-set cabin paying homage to Toyota’s illustrious sports car history, the dynamic power of the FT-86 II concept gives the clearest indication yet as to the final design of Toyota’s next sports car.

The FT-86 II is an entirely driver-oriented concept, designed to give form to the intrinsic joy of driving through precise, instantaneous responses to even the smallest throttle or steering input, for those who regard driving as a passion rather than a necessity.

Based on the ‘Functional Beauty’ concept, its bold, sweeping form has been generated entirely through the constraints of function, and aerodynamics developed from F1 technology.

Its low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell stretched tight over the engineering hard points, the FT-86 II concept’s muscular body work has been made as compact as possible. Featuring a long, 2,570mm wheelbase, the concept is 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and just 1,270mm high.

Rather than relying on a heavy, large displacement powertrain for its performance, the FT-86 II returns to Toyota’s sporting roots by combining a free-revving boxer petrol engine and a 6-speed manual transmission with compact dimensions, light weight and a low centre of gravity for the best possible power-to-weight ratio.

Both powertrain and driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to optimise balance for maximum poise, high speed stability and dynamic agility. Allied to a front engine, rear-wheel drive format, this awards the FT-86 II lively, accessible performance, highly engaging, readily-exploitable dynamic abilities and maximum driving pleasure.

European sales of Toyota’s new sports car will begin in 2012.

New 2011 Toyota FT-86 II concept specifications, review, photos and images courtesy of Toyota."

So while Toyota dragged their feet on this concept Hyundai came out with the Genesis coupe and by the time the 86 goes to production it will be tamed enough so you cant tell the difference.

Joel, what are you talking about? Maybe you're just trolling but the Toyota concept came out in Nov '09 (which is obvious from the thread title). Meanwhile the Genesis coupe went on sale in February of the same year, roughly NINE months earlier. So...you have your timeframe all screwed up. Nevermind the Genesis's weight and size are almost identical to a Ford Mustang.

It would appear that the press embargo (for first drives anyway) was lifted today. The reviews say in the fun to drive category it blows the Miata out of the water. Info I've seen thus far from Autocar and CAR magazines:

53/47 front rear weight distribution
197hp 2.0 boxer 4
7500 rpm redline
1280 kg curb weight (2,816lbs)
215/45R17 tires front/rear
rear Torsion LSD
fully defeatable ESP

This tidbit has me somewhat excited:

Quote :
"He also said that an R version of the FT-86 was coming with less weight, Brembo brakes (our test car’s stoppers were from Hitachi), a rollcage, a larger rear wing, no rear seats and, yes, a mechanical LSD but no more power."

(minus a larger rear wing - fuck that)

If the curb weight really is slightly over 2800lbs consider me not as interested. 2600lbs has been the oft talked about number and to me 2800lbs is heavy for a car this size. Meh.
