Canonical answer: The universal translator.
Real-life answer: That would require too much work creating languages for every species. Creating subtitles. Training the actors to speak that language, etc. There are dozens of new species introduced each season. At least they create script for most of the species on the show.1/8/2010 3:45:18 PM |

Yes, this happened in DS9 as well with species from the Gamma quadrant.

People in the United States say that we're all living in paradise, and we know that not to be true. She was probably just grandstanding.

how come when they run into different ships they are never at different angles, they are always in the same orientation (they have the same "up")

The ships were wire models. It would be extremely costly and difficult to do a battle where they were all over the place.
Also, it would be confusing as hell for the audience.
I mean, even Battlestar Galactica, with it's CGI, had ships mostly on the same plane of reference. 1/8/2010 4:19:57 PM |

i would also assume it would be less disorienting visually to roll up on a ship "upside down" and it was an etiquette of future space travel.
there were plenty of battle scenes, especially in later episodes, where ships had multiple orientations.

Species who live on an environment with gravity will natural be more "familiar" with an environment where everything has the same "up."
When they're in space, they'll be more comfortable seeing other things the same way.
And since all the humanoid species live on planets with gravity, they all like seeing everything else "right side up." Thus, they orient themselves right side up with another ship.
I mean, if you think about it there's really no reason to make a ship aerodynamic looking anyway. It's a vacuum. They should all look like Borg cubes.
EDIT: Also, think about it this way. The ships are all designed right side up. Like deck 1 through deck 20, etc. The bridge being towards the top front of the ship, etc. If you were attacking the ship, it would make sense to look at it the right way, so you wouldn't attack the wrong part of the ship.

And then the bit about Khan thinking "two-dimensionally".
It seems like that would be one the first things to consider.

A sphere is actually a more efficient use of space, but then people would criticize it for looking like a death star.

all ships they encounter happen to be on the same plane of reference because kirk/picard/archer/other captains in the star trek universe have superior luck concerning that particular probability 1/8/2010 4:27:46 PM |

Is the 'screen' on the bridge a huge window, or just a TV that displays an image of what the outside looks like? If it's a TV screen, why did they put the bridge in a vulnerable position near the outside of the ship instead of burying it deep within the hull of the ship. 1/8/2010 4:51:36 PM |

conceptually the show's designers probably made it a window at first, but then made it a screen instead to communicate with enemy captains and such. 1/8/2010 4:55:32 PM |

it's a holographic screen. if you look at shots of the enterprise from the outside, there is no large window at the front of the bridge.

I love star trek but the universal translator has always really bothered me, they need to at least try to explain the technology and explore writing options where it is not completely working (yes they've had a few episodes where they couldn't speak the same language but they never really had it pertain to what the universal translator supposedly does)
Quote : | ""Yeah, I've seen that one. It's just convenient that all aliens look like humans with shit added on. Just once I'd like to see one missing stuff or with freakishly disproportioned parts."" |
it's not unreasonable to expect most intelligent life to be bipedal and humanoid, at least the ones the federation is closest to in space and has to deal with, plus they come up with plenty of other creative aliens

It’s both.
My guess is that’s just how the federation chose to do it. Ships today are designed this way too.
However, there are several rooms with consoles that are designed to be backup bridges, and really any console can be reprogrammed to control the ship.1/8/2010 7:53:14 PM |

Without checking Memoryalpha, it has "algorithms" which analyze speech patterns to determine language.
