single threads for each individual website is stupid, nobody wants a thread dedicated to EVERY SINGLE DEAL WEBSITE ON THE INTERNET!!!!!
before you know it we'll have an ebay.com, amazon.com, geeks.com threads in Tech Talk. single threads like "Perpetual tech deals thread" keeps it simple, searchable, on topic, and relevant.
i'd SO much rather have a 201 page Apple iPhone thread than 10,000 threads about iPhone accessories, apps, new models, news, rumors, complaints, etc.

well, i think having one thread dedicated to just Android is retarded, as any discussion about a particular phone or even Android development just buried under people talking about the latest ROMs and apps.
But I agree with you, a "Tech Deals" thread is the perfect place for shit like Newegg promo codes, slickdeals FP deals, amazon gold box, etc. having a one-stop place for everyone to get beneficial info and to keep discussion organized. why the fuck would you want a new thread for each deal site is beyond me. anyway, wdprice3 finds Macs complicated so its no surprise he can't handle a broad concept like "tech deals" 6/29/2011 6:33:27 PM |

This seems like the most relevant place to ask this...here's the situation:
The hard drive on my Dell 8400 recently failed and I just got around to replacing it. I don't really use this machine often so I ordered this drive from newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148701
When I try to reinstall windows on the drive I get all kinds of issues. Mainly that the drive is recognized, but its recognized improperly as 4.1 Gb. I tried slip streaming the latest Sata controller drivers into the install and that didn't help. I finally booted into the SeaGate diagnostic tool SeaTools and it reports that the drive is faulty.
A super pain in the ass that it arrived DOA, but not a major deal so I get an RMA to return the drive. Problem is that the calculated shipping cost to return the drive is $10 on a $40 drive. Looking at the newegg FAQ's I see this
Quote : | " Does Newegg.com pay the return shipping cost for defective merchandise? No, Newegg.com does not pay the return shipping cost for defective merchandise. We are not responsible for product defects, because we do not manufacture the products we carry. However, if you pay to send the item back to Newegg.com, we will replace the item and ship the replacement to you at no charge. Newegg.com will employ every resource it has to ensure that your item is replaced promptly, without hassle." |
That sounds like a load of crap to me. $40 really isn't a huge deal, but the principle of the thing seems wacky. I'm thinking of trying to dispute the charge with American Express instead of arguing with them.
Has anyone else had issues with items showing up broken from any kind of online service? Did you have to pay to return the item?8/31/2011 5:54:51 PM |

You're supposed to RMA it to the manufacturer, newegg is not in the business of warranties. 8/31/2011 6:07:20 PM |

To me warranty means that the item dies within a set period of time. If I bought an ipod from best buy and the screen was cracked when I opened the box, I would expect them to replace it. If they told me I had to pay $50 (25% of the price) to return it to apple, I would be pissed. 8/31/2011 6:58:33 PM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
The only entity responsible for manufacturing defects is the manufacturing company, it makes no sense for the distributor to take on the liability for damages outside of their control. This is why warranties come from manufacturer's only and why Best Buy charges you extra for a second warranty for things like cracked screens that the manufacturer may not RMA since it's likely it happened under the distributor's care.
If it's confusing for you, next time ask if it's a manufacturer's warranty or the retailer's warranty. Newegg clearly labels everything under the sub-heading "Manufacturer's Warranty"
Most manufacturer's will pay return shipping (depending on original MSRP and type of item) and why it's common practice for retailer's to charge for it.

RMAing HDDs has to be one of the most painless processes ever.
Goto website; Chat with rep; Give SeaTools findings Get RMA #; Answer phone and give CC details; Ship old drive in new drive's box with attached prepaid label;
It's all done before Newegg even receives your defective product and you might even get a 5.00 or 10.00 credit with them for the hassle (or more like eliminating their hassle in dealing with the manufacturer.) 8/31/2011 7:18:11 PM |

This is why I love Amazon. Have an issue with a Kindle they'll overnight you a new one and give you 30 days to return the defective one.
Dell is another great company. When I had a warrantied Dell laptop I would go online to chat with support about an issue and they'd have a tech guy at my house within 1-2 business days to replace the part.
Apple warranty sucks. Turn around takes weeks. Especially if they have to replace something. I had to get a screen replaced on a MBP and it took a week and a half. 8/31/2011 7:18:57 PM |

Yeah Amazon is amazing. I ordered some plates for my moms one time and like 2/5 were broken. They shipped a new set and told her to just keep the good ones and trash the rest. 8/31/2011 7:21:08 PM |

The best warranty is American Express though. They'll give you returns on almost anything you buy up to like $300 (so if you buy something online/from a store and don't want it, but the retailer won't take it back, AMEX will let you return it to them for a full refund). They also extend manufacturers warranty on anything you buy for a year. Hard to beat. 8/31/2011 7:31:04 PM |

Plus they dick around simple questions and make you feel like an idiot even though you have more knowledge about computers then they do. I mean if you have a warranty problem, they require you to setup an appointment with one of their genius' before you can take it to the store and have someone there just take a look.
At my old job, one of my co-workers finally got the IT to buy him an imac to use PS with it. For the first four months, he had to personally take it over to apple no less than 6 times because it would crash constantly and they couldn't figure it what was the issue. Finally, he shipped the imac back to apple, waited a few weeks and finally got a completely new one with no explanation. He ended up calling apple out of curiosity and CS told him that it had defective ram... SERIOUSLY!?!?! 4 months wasted because some dumb fucks couldn't figure out that a $50 part in an $1800 imac was the issue?
And he was a die-hard mac fan, but you could see in those months of his patience with mac was wavering. I always asked him "so hows the new imac working out for yah?", he just responds with a turned head and the bird, no words. lol9/14/2011 6:38:33 AM |
